Do you like or dislike Cloanto/Amiga Forever?

I don't like Cloanto and Amiga Forever. I even downloaded a pirated version of it. I only use it to get the Kickstart ROMs and Workbench disks for WinUAE and WinFellow.

adonay 12 March 2019 20:22

I never liked Cloanto but cant say i love their roms or the "brilliant" software package they supply.
Hate is a bit harsh though but i feel all these small company's should just stop milking the amiga brand .

Marlon_ 12 March 2019 20:25

Why not put the emotions aside and just look at the facts instead?

Yes. Amiga Forever damages the emulation community and the Amiga brand. Emulators are made to play old games and software for free on a modern computer.

I only use Amiga Forever to get the Kickstart ROMs and Workbench disks for use in the bundled emulators WinUAE and WinFellow. (You can find them in the Amiga Forever installation directory in folders called "WinUAE" and "WinFellow")

Most people out there don't like Cloanto for their decision to re-copyright AmigaOS <3.5 after Commodore's bankruptcy in 1994.

Hmmm, not sure what to make of this thread or it's purpose... also numerous members have reported it.

I'll leave it alive for now but please be civil and don't let this turn into a heated discussion / flamewar.

...but the thread title / poll question needs to be tamed a bit so have changed accordingly.

Onto the question at hand, I'm definitely no Cloanto supporter though.

In all honesty, I do believe that their package / front-end is absolute bloatware and have no need or use any of their Kickstart ROMs / Workbench disks.

If you are going to emulate then just use WinUAE or FS-UAE directly; far less headaches, free and better support on EAB coming straight from the authors' :agree

mcgeezer 12 March 2019 21:11

So do i owe anyone any money for using winuae with a500 and a1200 emulation?
I do own the real hardware as well, and my original work bench disks.

Retroplay 12 March 2019 21:19

Dislike, yes, very. Hate, no, that's a tad harsh.

Unfortunately people still throw away their money on their "product", hence there's market for their drm infested bloatware. :(

TuKo 12 March 2019 21:23

I dislike such all black or white polls.

gregthecanuck 12 March 2019 21:23

@MarioMario456

You do realize that Cloanto via their new sister company "C-A Acquisition Corporation" IS the new Amiga Inc? They now own all the IP.

As for killing the company or pirating their software (via links in your profile) that does sound a little crazy. Maybe you need a vacation?

Oh wow!!!

@MarioMario456; please remove from your signature immediately and I strongly suggest that you read EAB's Rules & Help.

...especially Workbench disks, Kickstart ROMs & software or music files still supported/for sale.

R4M 12 March 2019 21:48

I bought the DVD (AF 2014) once and only use ROMs & Workbench with FS-UAE and WinUAE. Spending 30 bucks once in a lifetime to get licenses for all classic OS Software is not brilliant, but OK. I have no other feelings about AF.

mintsauce82 12 March 2019 21:57

This is beneath the dignity of EAB

I totally agree.

lesta_smsc 12 March 2019 22:16

I know it can be easy to create a specific Amiga environment once familiar with WinUAE or using YouTube, but their preconfigured Amiga set ups are very handy.

I started off with their Amiga Explorer software to get the necessary ROMs and disks backed up which was very handy. But that is going back several years! Not sure if it has changed much since the lol.

Viceroy 12 March 2019 22:18

This will end in tears if those Roms & Workbenches don't get removed!

acidbottle 12 March 2019 22:19

its hard to flat out dislike a company that is selling you a licence for amiga roms and os, effectively keeping alive the amiga legacy in some way. i bought it but ONLY for the roms/adfs .. the launcher is utter rubbish.

People are allowed to discuss whether or not they support Cloanto; just like there are threads with people's opinions about Amiga Inc, Hyperion or any other Amiga company.

Agreed :agree

Unfortunately GMs cannot edit member's signatures, only RCK can do this, otherwise it would have been done already...

I did send MarioMario456 a PM asking him to remove immediately so hopefully very soon this will happen.

Edit: he has now removed the signature.

+1

I used to use Amiga Forever (2012 Edition) and whilst Cloanto's supplemental DVD material is great (all manner of Amiga documentaries and speeches), I took a dislike to the frontend and the limitations it imposed. I felt a lot better once I discarded that package and just used the ROMs and WB disks with WinUAE by itself.

And then I discovered that Cloanto had altered the ROMs on a yearly basis! I think it's good that some company should hold the copyright for the Amiga Kickstarts and Workbench disks, but don't go altering them just to suit your ego, Cloanto! It's meant to be legacy software, after all!
