Scourge of the Underkind: Development thread

Hi everyone

I just thought I'd share with you some exciting news about a new game for Amiga that is in the works.

Scourge of the Underkind is going to be a 8-way scrolling action game with vast maps, hidden areas, lots of meanies and bosses to kill on your way to ridding the world of the Underkind and their evil minions.

Gameplay will be a mixture of all our favourite games, from Gods to Chaos Engine and Alien Breed and will be free upon release to download in .ADF format.

For the art-style I am mixing up medieval with primitive steam machinery to give the game a unique look which will hopefully capture the imagination.

It has taken a little while just to get to this stage because the usual life commitments get in the way of projects such as these but we're making good progress on this game.

The game will have music especially composed for it as well as cool sound effects.

I will be posting any progress videos to this thread and hopefully so will the programmer.

Here is an early test of the engine, the key sprites are there as a sort of stress-test to show how well the engine is performing. And lag or jerkiness is down to recording software.

A very slow and boring video of me editing tiles:

Thanks for looking! :)

That´s what is an 8-way scroll!! :)

PortuguesePilot 26 December 2015 18:18

Thank you for doing this free for download. Best of luck with it! I'm definitely looking forward for it!

Scrolling looks good. Also with background tile animations already included. And the graphics are great!

Choose a development goal which you can reach in the next 6-12 months and don't try to do too much, and this will be a successful new homebrew game for the A500. :)

Looks like a game with style :) I would love to play it.

Yeah looks great, I loved seeing the dev graphics!

Thanks for the positive feedback!

The game is being programmed in assembler, I am very lucky to be working with Magnus. Here is his Youtube channel, he has a load of videos showing off his various demos etc.

I will be posting more videos of my own, timelapses of me working on various things or editing maps etc.
I am also very aware of the creep that can crawl up on projects like this, which is why the mechanics will be simple. Explore maps, kill baddies, grab coins, buy stuff to help you explore maps and kill baddies. :)

It's very exciting.

I don't think so. Have you checked the FPS in WinUAE showing this tech demo? It runs in 33-35 FPS. Too slow PC/Laptop used for the demo? :)

CaptainNow 26 December 2015 23:39

Ahh!
I had a ton of other programs running in the background too...one of which was the recording software so yeah, my P.C isn't up to much haha! :D

very cool LordN, thank you for giving us something to look forward too and enjoy :)

ps. any advantages if running this game with AGA, or would be just the same performance/etc if using an A500?

As far as I know it will be the same experience, but we'll make sure it's the best we can produce :)

Nice!

So you use DeluxPaint for creating the tiles? Cool. Perhaps that's the best tool for the job. Never used it myself actually. Thanks for past and future great work!

Yes, after all these years it's still the program of choice for a project such as this. I could use Photoshop or Grafx2 to produce the art for this but I have so much fun using Dpaint :D
