:great

Getting there! :D

chiark 27 March 2009 16:04

Indeed.

This post has been made from OWB inside Icaros within VMWare :) . So yes, there's a viable browser on AROS.

Blimey!

chiark 27 March 2009 16:11

OK, colour me very impressed - impressed enough to start using this in anger. Sure there's lots of little idiosyncrasies, but they're just cute ;) , like OWB posting everything twice...

But wow, this is looking positive.

what machine are u running it on chiark ???

Amiga1992 27 March 2009 23:37

I am trying to install this on a USB stick or SD card... Does anybody know how to do it? No matter if I copy all shit to the card or pendrive, it would never boot. Do I have to format the card in a special way? Or should I format it from within AROS?

An help[?

All you need is VMWare ;) Your setup should run it fine :)

Rabbit80 28 March 2009 01:05

Bah - I hate VMWare - I use it every day :p

I know about VMWare and there's more than one reason I want it installed apart.
So, did anybody install this on a pendrive or SD card? Please help.

Not certain... but it it should!

8800GTX is not supported yet so you will need to boot using VESA graphics (boot menu option)

Im not actually familiar with the procdure myself, never tried!

But all the work done to make AROS bottable from USB devices has been done my Michal Schulz you can read about his work on his blog!! You might find the anser there???

The AROS-EXEC website is down atm, but that would be a good place to search for info and ask the question directly in the forum!!

if you use IRC client someone could help you at aros irc channel, irc.freenode.net #aros

sorry i cant help you further!

I got a warning from firefox saying that the website had sread malware or somethng like that, so i couldnt enter the forums.

For a PeeCee to boot from ANY media it has to be marked as bootable... I'm not too sure how to do this with SD/ Mem stick etc...

Try this maybe.. (from a quick googly search)
  • Extract from bootable.zip the "bootable.exe" file
  • Put your SD card into reader or SD slot in computer and copy "bootable.exe" to the SD card
  • SD card behaves as disk and has assigned some letter (for example "F:"). Run shell (on winXP: menu Start - Run..., type "cmd") and change to SD card (by typing "F:" and press Enter in this example case)
  • Run "bootable.exe" You will be prompt to give right syntax as "bootable.exe F:"
  • Confirm and your SD card is bootable (Note: Doesn´t work with SanDisk Ultras "USB-Edition"!)

@Akira. IIRC , starting Icaros, it does some sort of setup, asking for usb suport, etc. if thats enabled and its recognized somehow, have a look at Tools/HDToolBox.
its a bit tricky here. it should look like: ata.device -> unit 0 -> partition 0 -> DH0/DH1
(in case of a recognized usb device you have to choose usbmss.device - i guess so)
partition 0 has to be the AROS RDB thing, the DHx are setup as FFS (or SFS). reboot aros after saving changes.
then you have to format DHX from cli ( format DRIVE=DHX NAME=WB FFS INTL ). HDToolBox again: "Switches" for DHX to make it automount/bootable.
then you can use the Tools/InstallAROS to move all files to DH0. you also have to edit DH0:boot/grub/grub.cfg, like this example (if its not done by the aros-installer - i had to add it manualy):
Code:

title AROS VBE  640x480  16bpp
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/aros-pc-i386.gz vesa=640x480x16 ATA=32bit floppy=disabled
quiet
boot

the guide is here: http://aros.sourceforge.net/document...stallation.php
these were the steps (those i can recall) i had to do, when i installed an aros-nightly build, to make the system boot from the virtual hdd. maybe it helps somehow.

Amiga1992 28 March 2009 20:54

Well, I accepted the USB thing, entered HDToolbox and found the USBMSS.DEVICE thing... but I am not able to make any changes to it! Is it because I am running it under QEmu?

However from what I read from Mihcal's post. the support for mass storaqge devices is not complete yet.

hit 30 March 2009 22:04

i run it also using qemu and i was able to "edit" the ata.device. not tested with usbmss.device. maybe its just lacking proper implementation for now.
