Wings - Faster machines nerf gameplay?

I've been playing wings on the A500 (disk version), played several missions. Though I'd try it on my A1200 (68030 50 mhz) using the WHDLoad version, transferred my save to keep progress. However the game now seems impossible at times, the 2D sections are fine, but when playing the 3d flying missions you get shot down almost immediately, it's like the AI is acting 8 times quicker than you can. The difficulty seems balanced on a standard A500, but very un-balanced on faster machines.

Could it be possible to regulate/reduce the frame-rate like what was done on Wing Commander CD32? Which also becomes too difficult at super fast speeds.

Definitely sounds like a WHDLoad / slave issue...

I've played over 60 missions using the .ADFs and never once experienced what you've described.

JOTDs note from 2001. Well, today it's better fixable i guess. WHDLoad can do much more than 17 years ago. ;)

Note: - The game works OK in DOS mode, except that I'm not sure the music is played. - I started working on this game in November 2000, but I had a hell of a time understanding and emulating overlay executables with OSEmu. I also re-wrote console.device emulation (I could have avoided that since now KickEmu/KickDos makes it possible :) ) Now it works, and it will allow to make some other patches when overlay exe is used. - The game should be downloadable from www.cinemaware.com in the next weeks/months - You may experiment some slight gfx problems (at level 3). I spent a lot of time trying to fix it, but I could not. So I give it up (I'm not as good as I used to be ;))

Try using "ExpChip", it will not fix the problem but might work OK as workaround.

@DamienD. Were you playing the game on the A500? Although it's slow the gameplay works well at 7.16 MHz, obviously tuned for this speed, and like yourself have got quite far into the game. Running on the 68030 at 50MHz, it's like a movie on fast-forward.

@Retro-Nerd. Hmmm, that's a long time ago, doesn't bode well for a new slave...

@StingRay. Thanks, I`ll give that a go, see what happens. I did unplug the accelerator, running on stock A1200, and still found the game to fast.

I don't have a "real" Amiga anymore; haven't since 1995 or so...

WinUAE with an A500 configuration.

It's a bug in the game code, nothing to do with WHDLoad.

Spent some time with the game this week, using "ExpChip" does help slow things down a little, still too fast really but a welcome option. For now sticking with A500 disk version.
