Ideas on how to connect internal USB read to DENEB

Hi all

I have just bought an internal 3.5" Akasa USB card reader and USB port for the A4000. I have looked hard for a means of connecting it to the DENEB, but have ended up going round in circles with it. The reader has the normal 10 pin USB plug that if you were using in a PC would be simple enough to install, but the DENEB has a single row of pins for the external USB ports and a normal internal USB socket.
Has anyone else done the same thing? How did you end up connecting it?

Make/buy something similar to this: http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/...roducts_id=898

Obviously you'll only need one row & one plug, but you get the idea :)

Then using this cable, connect the card reader to the Deneb's on-board USB port & the headers on the Deneb to your chassis/backplane-mounted USB ports.

PZ.

Yea, thats it, but I don't want to loose the ports at the back, so will need a small 2 port USB hub, that I can plug into the internal USB socket on the DENEB. Do you know if the pin outs for the USB headers are stanardised?

Sorry, no idea on that one (there is a standard, but who knows if the Deneb pinouts comply...I don't have one).
Maybe ask AmigaKit?

I have wired a hub to a USB A plug on the one I use.

Just need to make sure you wire it correct.

red = 5v
white = Data+
green = Data-
black = Gnd

Sometimes you get an extra pin which is also gnd for outer shielding.

Has your reader got a usb socket on it?

Hi FOL, yea, it has card slots and a usb socket...so two seperate USB devices. Are your leads able to be rewired if need be?

I think you could do what I did.
Buy a hub, get a usb a plug and use it to replace the header lead on usb hub.
Then get a double usb to plug pin header, and connect it straight to reader and usb port.
You can then leave the hub internal and then use plug to pin headers to attach other hub ports to rear usb headers.

This is how I have 6 usb ports and 2 card readers connected.

Do you have a list of all the bits I need please? Part numbers?

It's alright, I have just got my head around it now. I will order the lead up and find a 2 port hub thats small enough to leave in the machine.

What I am doing is I have taken a usb 4 port hub, and took it a part. I removed the external power coupler and soldered a cut down internal power extension for internal drives and soldere the 5 volt and ground to the ush board. This was you are drawing power directly from the power supply not the deneb. I will be ordering 2 usb to pin header cables when I get around to it then plig those into the usb hub. I have not finished but that is the plan.

Thats exactly what Im doing and said, :).
It gave me 8 USB's to use.

I have ordered up the cable from Amigakit, and two self powered hubs from eBay. I only intend to use flash drives or flash cards for the internal port. I will have to see if I run into problems, but for now I want to be as minimalist as possible.
But taking the power connecter out of a hub and wiring in a floppy/other drive power connecter is a great idea. See what happens in the coming week then!
No damage can be done though if a device draws more power than Zorro can provide? Will DENEB shut the port down when to much current is drawn, and will it pop up a message telling me this??

Thanks all

Has your reader got a usb socket on it?

Hi mate. I recieved the cable and am trying to work out if I need to somehow rewire it for my card reader. The manual for the USB card reader and USB port states:

red = vcc2
white = D-2
green = D+2
orange = GND
gnd = oc

brown = vcc1
yellow = D-1
blue = D+1
black = gnd
key

looking at this I am just not sure if the cable I have needs modifiying, what do you think?

Thanks

Now thats an odd way they coloured the lead.

Make sure first pin header has red going to red (vcc2).
Put the second pin header red to brown (vcc1).

So, like this;

Pin Header ----- Reader / USB
Red ----------- Red
White --------- White
Green --------- Green
Black --------- Orange

Pin Header ----- Reader / USB
Red ------------ Brown
White ---------- Yellow
Green ----------- Blue
Black ----------- Black

Im only going by what your telling me, obviously make 100% you are correct in what you told me.

I am still not 100% sure about it. Looking at the diagram (the Akasa manual) and lining up the lead (from you guys) I get the feeling that I would have to swap both D-1 and D+1 pins round along with D-2 and D+2...
I have a few years back plugged in such a device into a PC motherboard thinking it must be standard, and when I inserted a USB key it did not work and strange smell came from the PC, I don't want this to happen to me again!

Seems odd they would reverse the D+ and D-.

Board specs please.
Make and Model.

This is from the sheet that came with the card reader/usb port. It's an Akasa Internal Card Reader for 3.5" drive bay.

Most USB hardware will reconfigure if DP and DM are the wrong way round.

Magic smoke is usually released when you connect pwr & gnd wrong.

I did'nt know that. But would the DENEB do this? If not then the idea I had of plugging the reader and adapter bacle into a PC USB port and testing it that way might not work. It might give the impression it's all working and the signals are the right way, but that might be bacause it's reconfigured it's self to make up for the signals being the wrong way round. If the DENEB does not do this it might damage it??

I would have said it would be ok, but a colleague here says it depends on the pull-ups and pull-downs on the board.

If in doubt, don't do it.
