Suppressed Fred Fish disks
Specifically, #57, #80 and #88. These "suppressed/banned" disks seem to have fallen through the cracks, none of the Fish Disks sites nor abandonware sites have them :-(
|
why were they surpressed?
how subversive can 880k be? |
According to
http://aminet.net/package/misc/fish/fish-0057 disk 57 was removed for copyright reasons and replaced with disk 97. Similar messages are on the aminet pages for disks 80 (replaced by disk 90) and 88 (replaced by disk 89). The pages for fish disks 97, 90 and 89 give more information: http://aminet.net/misc/fish/fish-0097.readme http://aminet.net/misc/fish/fish-0090.readme http://aminet.net/misc/fish/fish-0089.readme |
That's a shame, it looks like these rare disks have now been lost forever.
Yet another bit of Amiga history gone, the Amiga dies a little more :-( |
Did you try http://fish.back2roots.org/#FishDisks ??
|
The same situation over there, no disks.
|
We bought quite a lot of fish disks back then - I'll have to have a check to see if any of those missing ones are amongst them, though the disks are at my parents' place.
Does anyone know what was on the disks? |
I have the 'Fred Fish Book - Disks F1 to F660' publication.
This is a fully desciptive booklet with sorted index. Copyright 1992 Pollysoft Books. Unfortunately the entries for disks 57,80 and 88 read simply "WITHDRAWN". :( [Edit] I also have an original CDPD Public Domain Collection Including Fred Fish disks 1 to 660 (Almathera), but the entries for disks 57, 80 and 88 read as follows: Special Note: Disks 57, 80, and 88 have been recalled by Fred Fish and are therefore not included in this collection. If and when they are reissued they will be added back into the collection. |

Disk 57 'Ogre' subdirectory was replaced with 'sha' for Disk 97, Disk 80 'tools' subdirectory was removed for Disk 90, and Disk 88 'snap' subdirectory was removed for disk 89. These would seem to be the only clues available about the material on these disks which had "questionable redistribution status". |
Yeah, but that's not so helpful. Will have to find the fish catalogue disks I have, though I think they are at my parents' place too.

Ogre:
Short: A game that has been pulled from library Architecture: m68k-amigaos Source: Fish collection This disk has been pulled from distribution because of possible copyright and/or trademark infringements with copyrights and/or trademarks held by Steve Jackson Games, of Austin Texas (the Ogre game). If you find a copy in circulation, please notify the holder that it should be erased. A replacement disk without the Ogre game has been reissued as disk 97. |
Looks like they were suppressed too well... :(

Sorry for the five-and-a-half year bump, but for those who may be interested in this topic, I felt it was worth bumping based on finding a bit of additional information that would pretty much bring the whole situation almost full circle (full circle of course being finding copies of the actual disks). I may have found a source for disk 80 that includes the "tools" folder (although I don't know if the possible offending material within that folder was removed, as this source also has a disk 57 but without the "ogre" folder).
I was recently going through my old FrozenFish CD (ahh, good old KingFisher 1.x) and came across the entries for 57, 80, and 88 stating that they'd been removed. Since I'd remembered this from the old days but never quite knew why, I figured I'd go on a search for info. One of the results brought me to this thread. Further searching found the original Usenet posts to comp.sys.amiga where Fred recalled the disks. What better source for such information than right from the horse's mouth (or I guess in this case, the Fish's mouth? :spin) Here, Fred recalls disk 57 and explains in pretty good detail why. Quote:
Disks 80 and 88 are a little more interesting. The same posting details both recalls. Quote:
I was also doing some further reading, and it appears there were other issues with disks later on, but they were handled differently - instead of reissuing with a different number, Fred reissued the same disks with the problematic material (in this case, Tetris clones) removed and with an "a" added to the disk number. So basically, of suppressed or reissued Fish disks, the only ones we really need to find, I think, are 57, 88, and 238. Not much change there, found one disk and discovered another one we'd need to find to have a historically complete Fish disk collection. I also found an Amiga.org thread that claims there was a Star Trek TNG trivia game on disks 404 and 405 (first release), 506 and 507 (second release), and 538 (bugfix for second release) that was allegedly removed from Fred's CD compilations. I can only speak to FrozenFish Apr94, which contains all of these disks (and the site I linked to for Fish disks also has them), so I don't consider them pulled in the same sense, especially since many of the FF CDs are available online (in fact, the current CD image I'm using is downloaded because of the fact that my original disc is a little scratched). Just listing them here for completeness in case someone else has further information. Edit: I just checked the DMS of disk 57, and even ran it through DiskSalv looking for deleted files. No dice. |
I can confirm that the banned tools are indeed contained on the disk #80 from the mentioned site, and Ogre is indeed not contained on the disk #57.
|
I can also confirm that the "README.list57" file on the root of the disc does list Ogre. That's why I went the DiskSalv route, in case it was a disk on which someone had just deleted the Ogre folder.

I love old threads that I missed first time around!
This withdrawn Tetris clone, could it be of interest to the EAB user who is searching for a lost tetris version? IIRC there is a thread about the search on EAB somewhere... I will dig it out. Edit. Akira was looking for the lost Teris http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?...ht=Lost+tetris Not sure if he ever found it as it seems the thread is closed. |
Fred Fish 238
Hi All,
Been off a while due to pc problems. I have an .ADF of this disk. It does contain the teteris game, in german. I can run the game, but when I try to play it , the game crashes. If my little german is correct , it might be because it requires a joystick in port 2. My Amigas are all packed away for house moving, now delayed by the corona virus lockdown here in Ireland. If this disk is of any use to anyone, I will post it in the zone. (assuming I can remember how. :crazy:crazy Quote:

Please upload it. It's really nice find :D
