Buying Amiga hardware dilemma

Some Amiga hardware can go for an arm and a leg these days, so I often find myself in the dilemma of either getting what I'd really want and helping inflate/bloating the prices or compromising and getting something more reasonably priced.

This goes for Amiga hardware and software, but also for a lot of the older consoles and games.

What are your views, guys?

It's a damn shame that nice miggy hardware we like to use get OLD!
But the prices seem to stay high...

Paul_s 02 May 2010 11:44

depends what you want to do with it I guess. For playing games a 1200 can be had for very little money.

It's when you start looking for accelerators/rare big box stuff that prices become barmy :D

I manage to get everything I want without paying over inflated prices by being prepared to wait (sometimes a long time) for the right deal to come along.

My last purchases

2 * Atari Falcon 030 = £168 the pair
Atari MegaSTe (inc internal & external HDD + ICD link) = £68
A4000D Rev D = £150
Apollo A4040 = £65
Picasso IV = £145
DKB3128 = £85
A600HD = £10
Amstrad 6128 plus = £38
6 * MC68060RC50 E41J = $40 for all six including postage
A1200 8Mbyte RAM card = £10
Sega Saturn MK2 = £5
Sega Dreamcast = £8
Boxed mint XBOX Crystal = £5

It's all about watching, waiting and sniping. Setting yourself a price and sticking to it and not getting bidding fever. Another auction will come along soon enough.

As for prices I've noticed trends over the years which affect the prices of Amiga goods. They seem to correspond (roughly) to the standard events in the average 30-somethings life. i.e. Getting married, buying a house, having children etc.

Apple hardware I treid to sell some years ago and got about $2 for 2 x 5.25 FDD, along with a power supply.

Amiga seems to be the machine of choice for the retro collector, with the rarity of some of the chips, you've got a recipe for cash meglomaniacs.

Patience and a bit of luck goes a long way, I guess.
I'm just not very patient when it comes to these things.

There was a nice black A4000 060 on ebay a couple of months ago, priced at 1000€. I thought it was way too much then, but now that the spirit's gotten me, I would gladly pay that amount today.

Point is, being the sellers market, that it is, I really don't feel I have a choice - even though some prices are highly unreasonable (I'm thinking eBay mostly here). Doing that keeps the inflated prices alive though, just like certain console games.

Got caught up with bidding fever once, and never will again. 2 x AMD 2400MP's - pretty sad:)

I guess I'll take "Keep looking" as my mantra, as I continue my quest:)

Then you are everything you hoped not to be, The A4000 would be worth ~€150 and the 060 a lot less than €850!

Yes you do. You just wait.

I know, and it pains me. I just really want my A4000 back :rolleyes We've been separated for too many years. There was a lot more hardware in it, but I don't remember anymore details. It was a PPC 060, though.

And I'll have to :)

Hey look on the bright side, if you had held onto it, like I did with mine, it's likely you would had to do extensive repairs to it. Right now I am packing mine up for its journey to AmigaKit and I don't know at this point if I will ever see it run again. To tell you the truth, it's heart breaking :(

slk486 03 May 2010 20:06

Yeah, most likely. Good luck with yours though :)

In the meantime, I was lucky enough to find a used Scala Workstation withing driving distance, complete with 2 genlocks, peggy plus, 2 scsi controllers all sorts of coverdisks, games, disks, etc..

Cool stuff!

I'll make a new thread, since I want to sell off the genlocks and would like some fair prices recommended.

The battery hasn't leaked yet, so should I remove it, and how?

Oh and which SCSI controller should I keep, the Oktagon 2008 or the GVP 2000 HC+8 with 8mb RAM?

@ slk486

Get yourself over to AmiBay, if you haven't signed up already. It has a big Amiga section and the prices are way more reasonable than the other Bay....

slk486 03 May 2010 20:48

I already signed up, but I want some recommendations for setting the prices before I sell the stuff - otherwise I have nothing to go by.

jimmer78 04 May 2010 01:51

wow I just bid and won a apollo 1240 25mhz for 102 quid on ebay - chuffed!....especially as someone's selling the same one buy it now for 285! LMFAO!

Zetr0 04 May 2010 02:11

thats the problem with eBay.... it doesn't determin a price only what two or more people are willing to pay for it.

@Jimmer78

congrats on that apollo, with luck she will make your A1200 a very happy Amiga indeed!

The one for £285 has the MACH131 CPLD and so can be upgraded to 1260.

If yours has a MACH131 then it is a true bargain, if not then good value for money.
