Rebel's Palette, which one is the real one?

Hello guys,

A while ago I had created an optimized 16 colors palette to be used on my A1200/AGA as well my A600/ECS. Then I saw that Rebel's palette spreding around. Much like mine, so it would be a good idea to do some comparison tests.

The problem is that I've seen around a variety of different palettes, all called "Rebel's Palette"... now I'm a little confused, which one is the real one? And what else do they have more?

Below the colors, in 8 bit levels (000 -> 255) for AGA/RGB.

Code:

{00}: 153 153 153
{01}: 017 017 017
{02}: 238 238 238
{03}: 068 068 204 / 075 105 175 (IconLib) / 060 105 180 (IconLib new)
{04}: 119 119 119
{05}: 187 187 187
{06}: 204 170 119
{07}: 221 102 153
{08}: 034 119 051 / 000 080 110 (IconLib new)
{09}: 119 068 017 (Rebel's FullPalette) / 136 068 034 (Rebel's IFF.ILBM Palette)
{10}: 238 204 034
{11}: 068 068 068
{12}: 187 034 051
{13}: 051 170 068
{14}: 068 119 238 / 110 160 230 (IconLib) / 100 140 200 (IconLib new)
{15}: 204 119 051

The joke is the PEN:09, in the same Rebel's archive, the FullPalette-palette file (CRC32: DBF4699A), and the ILBM-palette file (CRC32: 8315709B) have different colors! :)

Worth to mentione is IconLib archive by Peter Keunecke, it contains a FullPalette (CRC32: 98ECA812) and a *NEW* FullPalette (CRC32: 53044E49), they differ for pen 3, 8 and 14... why?

I saw other different colors spread around the web, but I think it's not worth to mentione them.

Furthermore, what would be the 4bit levels (0 -> F) for OCS/ECS?
I know, I can just divide every number by 17, but I'd like to have a confermation.

thank you very much!!

I've also included a modified version of Rebel's palette with
16 colors which can be setup by copying FullPalette.prefs into
Envarc:Sys and calling C:FPPrefs from the S:startup-sequence.
This gives a much better balanced color mapping in many cases.
I've clearly stated that my versions are modified. There are some changes for the blue and green colors in order to give some blue drawer icons a better look. It's up to the user which palette he prefers. :)

Yes, Peter, asked just to know why.
indeed, there are too many red-orange-yellow pens, and just 2 pens for blue and green. maybe too hard to map the original GlowIcon drawer icon.

what about PEN 9?
is the good 119,068,017 or 136,068,034 ?

thanks

For Pen 9 I'm using 119, 68, 17 = brown.
Never tried anything else. I guess, all the red-orange-yellow pens are for the wallpaper playmates. :D
Anyway, it seems to be impossible to optimize a 16 color palette for everything, all icon sets, wallpapers and images. :sad
Here is an example screenshot of my modified (standard, not new) 16 color palette:

Ok, thanks for the info.

My optimized 16 colors palette was made to remap NewIcons' Palette (same as GlowIcons V1, and Mason classic icons), as well as GlowIcons 2 (used on OS3.5/3.9).

I made a NewIcons *safe* 15 colors palette (chosen from the original 31 colors), the same for GI2. Never forget the MagicWB grays, brown and rose.
In such a way an user can make an icon using that safe palette (NI-safe or GI2-safe) 15 colors palette and anyone can see it corectly (ECS-16colors, AGA-32colors or more).

the result is not so bad.

anyway, thanks for the info.
