TCD magazine finds
Figured I start a thread for interesting things I find while going through various gaming magazines.
A Commodore ad for the 'whole cosmos of Amiga' in ASM 3/1987: https://i.ibb.co/Cwj8Hk4/ASM-1987-03-94.jpg |
Some early Amiga sales numbers from Germany (ASM 10/1987):
https://i.ibb.co/F8pkjXn/ASM-1987-10-69.jpg Amiga 1000: 25,000 Amiga 500: 28,000 One page later sales numbers of the ST in the UK: https://i.ibb.co/CzqWRBB/ASM-1987-10-70.jpg Atari ST: 45,000 |
At end of 1989 the German magazine ASM had this to say:
https://i.ibb.co/zGtxtPm/ASM-1989-11-110.jpg Amiga and PC: Up, ST and C64: Down. In the 90s the consoles will get a big share of the market. Just two years earlier the 'race' between Amiga and ST was open and the ST was 'booming'. |
So that's a couple of months before A500s actually hit the shelves in Germany (and a good 6 months before the UK and US)? Do we know how many STs sold in Germany by October 1987, compared to just over 50,000 Amigas? I assume they mean 'UK' when they say 'England'.
|
I think by October 1987 the Amiga 500 was 'on shelves' in Germany. No idea about ST(e) sales in Germany at that point.
It's safe to assume that by 'England' they mean the whole UK, yes :) |
Just found a short statement that the CDTV wouldn't be available in 1990 in Germany (besides 2,000 'beta test machines'):
https://i.ibb.co/xXBs5Jd/ASM-1990-11-117.jpg They don't too excited about the software offerings either... |

A comment about CES 1990:
https://i.ibb.co/wdKK49b/ASM-1990-11-127.jpg To sum it up: Full price 8-bit titles are out, the future is Amiga - PC - consoles. Monopolies are bad for everybody. |
Interesting finds TCD.
I was lurking to the first photo to see if I could find a C= key on place of the left -Amiga key. To no avail. :p |
I'm not a hardware person, but that's about some rare first A500 (or A2000) models, right?

Interesting comment about the CDTV in the German magazine ASM issue 3/1991:
https://i.ibb.co/PFS5vf7/ASM-1991-03-77.jpg Rough summary: Commodore aims at a market segment that nobody else tries to occupy. |
In other words, commodore aims at a market segment that does not exist :)

Can't find the thread it was mentioned in, but there was a comment mentioning that Amiga and Atari ST versions of the same game often got the same score in magazines. Here's one example where that wasn't the case (at all):
https://i.ibb.co/CsFPK5c/ASM-1991-06-106.jpg The Amiga version's graphics got a 10 (out of 12) and the ST 7. That lead to the Amiga version gettting a 'hit' star from the magazine (ASM) and the ST version not. |
From ASM 11/1991:
https://i.ibb.co/QjX7XwZ/ASM-1991-11-042.jpg "The power of two" Rough summary: Strategy, adventure and simulation games are in, action games are out (this is in Germany). The ST is out, the Amiga is in, the PC is in and still on the rise (no mention of the C64 anymore). The consoles found their niche and benefit from conversions of popular computer titles. |
After 1990, C64 disappeared from UK, Germany and USA right?
