[Found: Wall 2] Old breakout game (clone of commercial game, changed nudie backdrops)

Hi,

since i'm starting with archiving all my disks again i did look especially for an old breakout game i did play back in 1990/91.
But it's hard to check more than 10000 disk if u don't know the name u r looking for.

It looked like a commercial game but it seemed to be some kind of scene release.
Maybe it was just a clone and/or ripped from a commercial release.

They used greyscale nudie backdrop graphics and as more stages u had finished as more tiles of the backdrop graphics u could see IIRC.
And i remember the background was green where the nudie pics were hidden.

But i can't remember the name of this game ...

EDIT:
It was some kind of an oldschool "Kinky Breakout". ;)
http://kinky.osmatic.be/
But with tiles instead of fading IIRC.

Babeanoid?

Skylight 08 August 2009 21:07

no .. BabeAnoid is too new and not really oldschool .
The game i'm looking for is much older and maybe a clone of a commercial game (1988-1991) with changed backdrop graphics.

Hmmm ... i remember something about Quartex now ... it seems i must look through all my disks ... this can take years ...

I know now it was a modified version of "The Wall" (1988) from Rainbow Arts.
You can find pics of the original game at HOL.

But i must still find the disk. ;)

It's not the original "The Wall" i'm looking for.

But i found the modified version already.
The disk is labeled with "Wall 2" and was in my briefcase with the other "important" disks. ;)

I was wrong with the tiles, just the background behind the girls is green like in a "blue" box (TV).
And the bricks r covering the more or less interesting parts of the pics instead. ;)

I believe this version is not in TOSEC.
It must be rare.
And i still don't know who modified it.

Zone it, pwetty pwease :D
No really, would be great if you could make it available :great

prowler 09 August 2009 00:27

Yes, please Zone it, Skylight! :bowdown

It looks like a great version of this old favourite! :great

Skylight 09 August 2009 00:38

ok .. then i will zone it for the needy punters among us. :D

But i saw there are already some different versions of "The Wall" in TOSEC.
Even 3 marked with "o hack".
And a Quartex version too ... that's why i did remember Quartex.

I will compare the versions later.

btw .. the ingame music is from Jean Michel Jarre .. that's why i liked this game and not for the pics :p

Wow, another gem found ;)
Thanks Skylight, could you perhaps check and list the potentially unknown games hidden in your secret briefcase?
Maybe you do have some others?

Yeah right... :D
I'm sure all the games in your briefcase have Jarrre music ;)
Thanks for the upload in advance :great

Retroplay 09 August 2009 00:44

Heh, I used to have that back in the day.
Jean Michael Jarre you say..
That reminds me of Detonator, which also happens to be an Arkanoid clone. ;)

Sounds more like Jan Hammer "Crockett's Theme" in The Wall. Detonator has indeed Jarre and Madonna.

There r only the disks i considered to be "important" and i never wanted to lose.
But on most of these disks r very well known games and you can find them in TOSEC already.

But i will have a look. ;)

I will check this later. ;)

Retro-Nerd 09 August 2009 00:53

The Wall intro/highscore music is a sample from Phil Collins "Take me home". ;)

Skylight 09 August 2009 01:16

hmmm .. you could be right about Jan Hammer "Crockett's Theme"

But it's not really clear since it's just a short loop.

If you don't compare it with the "Miami Vice" soundtrack it sounds more like Jarre. ;)

Wall, The (1987)(Rainbow Arts)[h Camel Soft].adf is not original, h = hacked/hack

Skylight 09 August 2009 04:02

I did check now the different "The Wall" versions in TOSEC.

My version is based on the Star Frontiers version.
But none of them is really identical with my version.

The Star Frontier versions got some problems in WinUAE too, while my version works flawless.
But the intro on my disk is broken.
It's a filesystem error that was already on the disk i got my copy from .. almost 20 years ago.

I will fix this and upload a clean and tested version.

Maybe i will make a another version with own pics or a mix between Star Frontier and Camel version.
An AGA-Fix for the intro is needed too.
But the game itself has no problems with AGA and 68060 CPU's.
The programmers did a good job back then.

How about an EAB version with the ingame pics of some EAB users? :D
There is room for another intro and the bootblock is still free too.
But it's a cracked game ... so better not. ;)

I promised a fixed version of "The o Wall" aka "Wall 2" (that's just the name of the disk ;) ) by Star Frontiers ...

And since i'm back from Porsche Leipzig now, i did compare all available dumps of this game.
Many AMIGADOS files of these disks were broken, but finally i put a fully working game together that's as close as possible to the original Star Frontiers release from 4th of January 1988.

But i removed the hidden "type" and Star Frontiers message ($0A0A names).
I did include a new intro (for the EAB users) instead and u will not see the CLI anymore.
Have fun! ;)

StingRay, Musashi and others will recognize where this intro comes from.
But it's modified again. ;)

This disk should work on any AMIGA with 512kB and more ... and is tested on following machines:

A500 (Kick 1.2 + Kick 1.3)
A500+ (Kick 2.04 + Kick 3.1)
A600 (Kick 2.05)
A1000 (Kick 1.1)
A2000 (Kick 1.3 + Kick 3.1)
A3000D (Kick 2.04 + Kick 3.1)
A4000D (Kick 3.1 Cyberstorm MK I 060/50 + Cyberstorm MK II 040/40)
A4000T (Kick 3.1 CSPPC 604e/233 060/50 + A3640)
CDTV (+ CD-1411 / can't exit the game intro and sometimes read errors)
CD32 (+ SX32 + CD-1411)
and several configurations in WinUAE too

(2 different Kickstart or CPU versions means 2 different machines)

So only the CDTV made some problems and i saw a few Blitter glitches in the new intro on the Cyberstorm MK I 060/50.
But i have no time to fix this since i must go to AUDI Neckarsulm tomorrow.

This disk is good enough to be released to the public and u will find it in the Zone in a few minutes.
The ADF file follows the TOSEC naming standards, but it's of course not in TOSEC yet.

Maybe later i will modify this game to use all available brick types since the golden bricks without any extras (laser cannon, glue, level jump etc.) can be really boring.
And maybe i will change the pics too.
But i have no time for this now ...
