Games where the sequel surpasses the original...

Games where the sequel surpasses the original...

... but also some where further sequels do not.

I was playing Speedball 2 at a friend's earlier today, and it got me thinking about what other games there are with a sequel that surpasses the original.

The obvious example (other than Speedball 1/2) that sprang to mind for me was Bubble Bobble, which imo manages to be beaten by Rainbow Islands on sheer fun-factor, even though the latter lacks the simultaneous multiplayer mode.

Sadly, Parasol Stars, although a good game in it's own right, i do feel is inferior to both of its predecessors, and so i have decided to throw that in as an extra topic of discussion :D

Anyone else know of any contenders for either of these categories? Amiga games preferred, although not a mandatory requirement of the thread :)

I agree, Speedball 2 to is awesome compared to the first one.

Easy ;)
Turrican 2 surpassed Turrican, yet Turrican 3... well... :(
:D

Hungry Horace 20 September 2010 22:38

i actually prefer Turrican 1 myself ... but i admit, i'm in no position to comment as i prefer Midnight Resistance to all 3! :lol

TCD 20 September 2010 22:40

Indeed :p
I'm waiting for Bippy's and Zetr0's judgement on Craptive I & II :cheese

gimbal 20 September 2010 22:49

arguably, Strider 2 was "better" than the first one... on the Amiga at least. Valhalla 2 was also better than the original.

What more... IMO Supercars 2. And Swiv if you call it a sequel to Silkworm. That's a tough one though as Silkworm also plays really, really slick.

Tough question actually!

Captive 1 without a doubt, I can already speak for them ;)

I'd compare Captive and Knightmare before I'd compare Captive and Liberation, but Captive remains the better one :)

Fabie 20 September 2010 22:51

zool 2 it is far better than zool 1
turrican 2 is better than 1
james pond 2 is far better than 1

Graham Humphrey 20 September 2010 23:02

Somebody touched upon it in another thread but Flashback is certainly better than Another World, for me.

alkis21 20 September 2010 23:12

Kick Off 2
Monkey Island 2
All New World of Lemmings
Chrono Quest 2
Mortal Kombat 2
Switchblade 2

Dastardly 20 September 2010 23:16

Lotus.

Same. Also, Street Fighter II compared to the original Street Fighter, that one's pretty famous.

I know that this doesn't have anything to do with games, but I was always impressed by how an awesome movie like The Wrath of Khan could directly follow the abortion that was the first Star Trek film.

please tell me you are suggesting that Lemmings 2 is better than Lemmings 1 but All New World of Lemmings belongs in the bin? :laughing

I am pretty unsure about Lemmings 1 vs. 2 ... i sued to say i preferred L2 but these days i'm not so sure.

(now, please only take this as s joke from the other thread)

I was going to say Gods 2 - since it hasn't been made yet its the best game of the series ;)

(only teasing, =D)

but its surprising how it looks so much like Robin Hood: legend quest? almost so it could be sequal =D

ANYWAY...

Speedball 2 - freaking awesome! -
Speedball 1.... not so.... infact a little on the lame...

Super Cars 2 - yay!!!! fan-ta-homing-missile-tastic!!!

Lotus 2 - much better than Lotus

Laser Squad 2 (aka UFO Enemy Unknow) el'so superior!!!

Jungle strike I would say was on-par with Desert Strike

hot debate on the Frontier Vs Elite - I love 'em both equally

Body-Blows Galactic was a better game than Body Blows (not that it was hard)

Eye of the Beholder II was spankulicious compared to the original

Dune 2 was better (although completely different from the first)

and thats me all thought out for the moment.
