If the heatsink isn't flat against the thing you want to transfer heat from, the thermal paste will work as an insulator instead of a heat transfer compound.

Thermal paste is not a good heat conductor, although it is a lot better than air.

its called a shim,you can use polished copper plate or anything that transfers heat okay.

:) it's an extra piece of metal you have to add yourself. The ppc heatsink don't come with it by default.
