Amiga Game Development Contest - Looking for Judges

Don't know how many people noted this following thread :

http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=92858

Thing is, this is going to happen. We need volunters to build the jury.

Anyone willing to try out new Amiga games, grade then and help choose the best one? :)

Ian 21 June 2018 19:51

What is the criteria?

I would love to help but only emulate. Do we want judges that can test on the real thing too? WinUAE and it's derivatives are great but they aren't perfect.

Let's not have 29 pages of waffle discussing it though ;)

Shatterhand 21 June 2018 19:55

Winuae is accepted. :) (And I am a big advocate for using Real Hardware... so the discussion is over - WINUAE IS ACCEPTED. Or FS-UAE or whatever :D )

Ian 21 June 2018 20:01

I know WinUAE would be fine for testing, but if we can get enough judges who can do both that would be preferable I guess.

Although I suppose if someone does code for a beast rtg setup that would seriously dwindle numbers.

I guess if there is at least one judge that can test on the real thing that would be ok then?

I am thinking judge a finds a bug or the game crashes at a certain point, judge b with real hardware confirms it doesn't happen on the real thing so it doesn't get marked down for it.

Something like that?

PortuguesePilot 21 June 2018 20:01

I have WinUAE and real A500 (1MB) and A1200 (9MB). I am available to judge games, if needs be. I will have to know the classification criteria, tho. Surely it won't rely solely on our personal tastes.

Criteria is = What game did you think it was best. I'll write some rules later, but the idea is you grade the game from 0 to 10, game with best average grade wins. We had a long discussion about this on the thread I linked above... and in the end we thought the best criteria is the simpliest one... which game you consider plays the best. That's it. You can weigh in some technical aspects (is the game using original assets or "stolen" ones? Is the game too bloated, asking for more hardware than it should?), but in the end the most important criteria is "Is the game any good?".

So we have Ian and PortugusePilot for it. We said previously 10 judges would be a good amount.

And I agree it would be good to have a balance between emulator and real hardware users :)

Ian 21 June 2018 20:12

I prefer the idea of a scale.

So let's say there are 20 games. Games are rated either the best getting 20 points worst getting 1 point or visa versa.

Makes it more likely to have an actual winner decided. Will also make it easier to rate as you are not trying to assign it a score you are just putting it in order of your preference.

E-Penguin 21 June 2018 20:14

I wouldn't know a good game if it bit me but I'm keen to assist with running the competition.

I Agree with you. I was thinking about adding this rule, judges rate games from best to worse. I think it's great.

MikeyG 21 June 2018 20:20

I'm both user of WinUAE and have real hardware too if judging is required.
I agree with Ian, point system makes sense.

Graham Humphrey 22 June 2018 01:09

Yes, I am definitely up for this too following a quick discussion with Shatterhand. I'll use my A1200/060 so another hardware user here.

The scale idea for scoring is an absolutely ideal one in my view also.

Shatterhand 22 June 2018 21:06

So we have

Ian
Graham Humphrey
MikeyG
Portuguese Pilot

We have talked about 10 judges on the original thread, but I think we could work well with just 5 or 6. Let's see if someone else steps up :)

linesmachine 23 June 2018 08:28

Sorry for getting involved so late. But absolutely, I'd love to be involved.

malko 23 June 2018 09:50

If a place is still available, I would be pleased to provide some of my spare time. Let me know :)

john4p 23 June 2018 11:58

I'd be glad to be part of this as well. :great

Shatterhand 23 June 2018 14:21

Ian
Graham Humphrey
MikeyG
Portuguese Pilot
Linesmachine
Malko
John4P

I think we already have enough judges :)

Nightshft 26 August 2018 23:47

If there is space for one more, I'd be glad to join in too. :)

(Winuae, A600 and an A1200 available.)

Edit: And also an A500, soon with/ or without an ACA500+

alkis21 27 August 2018 00:19

I would like to volunteer as a judge as well, if you're going for 10 judges.

I have a hard disk equipped Amiga 1200, I've -obviously- been an avid Amiga gamer since 1987 and I have game development experience. Among others, I have released the commercial adventure game Diamonds in the Rough and a simple Amiga platform game called Cornelius saves Christmas. I even helped ANCO in the making of Kick Off 2002 (a revival of Kick Off 2).

I can judge any genre apart from RPG and strategy titles, I don't have much experience in those.

john4p 01 March 2019 09:59

Will test the games thoroughly on Saturday and Monday. When will the "judging" process start?

You and the other official judges need to decide on this; but one would expect it to commence after the competition finished i.e. starting today.

You guys also need to decide on how long it should take to reach decisions regarding ranked places... a week or two maximum should be enough though shouldn't it?
