usb wrapper

hi,

maybe some usb wrapper could be added to be used with poseidon (eueusb.device ...)

Toni Wilen 30 July 2010 21:02

USB "wrapper" would be extremely complex and difficult task.

Why? Mass storage devices work without usb support, network does not need usb, input devices don't need usb support etc..

thomas 30 July 2010 22:11

I would like to use my USB scanner through uaescsi.device ...

Or a generic Betascan driver for Windows scanners: uaescanner.device (Not TWAIN, there must be something else in Windows, because the "Wizard for Scanners and Cameras" (free translation from German; wiaacmgr.exe) can scan without opening the TWAIN GUI.)

I'm intrigued too.... why would you want to use a scanner in winUAE ?

I could almost (and I say *almost*) see the point of usb on a Real Amiga.... but UAE :nuts pardon me but I'm confused.

Surely it is easier to scan / manipulate in winblows and then import your pix into your emulated Amiga in winuae ? (you can set up your winuae to do this y'know, with a 'PC' folder ;) - just drop the file into it once you have scanned)

or would that be too simple ?

I get that there are some mind squiffing things you can do on real Amigas... and the ability to connect USB scanners/cameras is probably one of them. But USB support in an EMULATOR ? :confused:confused

I genuinely don't understand the request. Or maybe I do, but I still cant see why you would want to... unless you are talking about doing everything in a WinUAE environment (i.e. using it as a "windows replacement") And having AMIGA OS do all your stuff.... which IMHO is bordering on madness. :nuts

No, it's the other way round. Amiga scanning Software, especially Scanquix, is much better than everything you get for Windows. It allows much more control over what is scanned and how. *Before* scanning begins.

I once started to write a Scanquix-like frontend for Betascan, but it would be much easier if I could do this in WinUAE.

Thanks for that, Thomas! :great

Now I know why requests for Amiga scanner drivers still pop up from time to time! ;)

i'm working on scanner software for morphos and aros. This wrapper could be useful for testing 68k port and drivers' port. Poseidon source code is located in aros archives.

Has anyone considered doing a USB over IP driver for Poseidon? Imagine the possibilities, direct access to USB devices even from Amigas that have no USB hardware attached :)

Toni Wilen 13 August 2010 11:27

Emulating SCSI scanner protocol probably isn't too difficult but afaik there is no good enough scanner API in Windows.. TWAIN probably sucks too much.

Emulating image file as an uaescsi.device virtual scanner unit is probably very pointless :D

So, it's not just the name that isn't interesting, then. ;)

rzookol 02 January 2015 21:19

bump :)
Maybe now, after releasing Thylacine specs, WinUAE could get some usb card emulation?

Toni Wilen 06 January 2015 13:54

No. You still need Windows driver to be able to access any real USB devices in low level.

Unless you want mostly pointless USB emulation that emulates for example hdf image as a virtual USB memory stick or USB HD or Windows supported mouse or joystick or keyboard as virtual USB input device.

demolition 06 January 2015 14:26

When using Windows XP Mode for example in Windows 7, it uses a USB virtualization driver which enables communication directly between the VM and the USB device. It is then disconnected from the host OS. I guess this is what needs to be used?

rzookol 08 January 2015 10:16

Yep, VirtualBox has EHCI support and it works in Windows.
