Amiga 1000 and Xerox Alto
There are some similarities between these systems:
- bleeding edge technology - advanced graphics capabilities - desktop metaphor - OS written in BCPL - "detachable" keyboard unit - clunky ball mouse - distributed processing on several units I wonder how much the Alto inspired Jay Miner. Some may also have come via Apple's Lisa. |
The bleeding edge pieces of AmigaOS weren't written in BCPL, only the DOS part which was outsourced to Metacomco in the UK.
|
Still I doubt there would be Amiga without Alto.

But Alto wouldn't have existed without Douglas Engelbart and his team https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJDv-zdhzMY (On his Wikipedia page it states a lot of people in his research team left for Xerox, so they definitely "took" stuff with them, just like people from Xerox left for Apple and built the first Apple System) |
