AROS: Stable AROS ABI_V0-20161228

AROS ABIv0 system (the one that is the core of Icaros 2.2 Preview) has now been made public.

What does this refresh give you? It makes most of the improvements and fixes that happen between December 2014 and December 2016 available to all users of current stable version of AROS.

For those unfamiliar with the progress of AROS, this is my new AROS is started on the virtual machine.

Has anyone released a decent icon pack for AROS yet? The current set is really, really ugly.

That said, I may try AROS again if it's now stable - I tried the previous stable build and it failed dismally to run at all on several laptops.

The background and the icons you see in the screenshots are not part of the package, it is my choice, I downloaded from HERE (They are ok also OS3), These icons are used by AspireOS, IcarOS instead it uses THESE; the distro reviewed is based on a recent Nightly Builds.

For compatibility you have to choose the right hardware:

Aros/Platforms/x86 Network support

Aros/Platforms/x86 Complete System HCL

I think the icons are ok (they look a bit like Gnome) but the wallpaper and fonts are out of place. They look like a Red Hat linux 7.2 distribution i had back in 2002.

It calculates that the resolution of the screenshot is not the best quality, the same icons and fonts at a higher resolution greatly improve, watch them on this screenshot made on AFA OS

Better but way too much old school linux-like?
I would go in this direction, with window background and single color window decoration, after all the Amiga was supposed to be a Mac clone.

I believe that the opposite, the first colored icons have appeared first on AMiGA OS

That's a screenshot of what, OS X 10.3 or something? That photorealistic style went out of fashion a long time ago and I actually think the icons that AMIGASYSTEM showed look more contemporary in some ways - what goes around comes around!

Personally I think an icon-set that mixes Workbench 1.x with the recent "flat" designs you see on iOS, Android, etc. could work really nicely.

Mac OS is never out of fashion.

"Skeumorphism" (that's how this "realistic" look is called in design) is severely outdated at the moment. Neither Windows nor Mac OS use this style anymore.

A proper WB 1.3 look done right would really work wonders.

AMIGASYSTEM 04 January 2017 15:16

Well Amiga is a super configurable system ;)

You can make your icons simply:

I do not see much different in quality from these AROS AspireOS:

I could use MagicWB in Aros Vision (68k), the problem is there are no free MagicWB icon sets. To make a complete distribution you need plenty of different and in many cases you would need icons from original package and that is copyrighted.

I must be the only one that actually prefers the stock 3.1 Colours + OS3.9 GlowIcons over others....

Ciao OlafSch a question about the project "Apollo core and AROS 68k", I wanted to know if it has something in common with your distro, or if they are two separate things. I tried the distro "Apollo core and AROS 68k" and I noticed that is very fast, even if unstable, only a few seconds to boot the system, watch videos, icons and background are not part of the distro
