Got this new toy from Japan! :D It is an Sharp X68000 Expert HD. It has 40MB HD and 2MB RAM. Also with the system is a joypad, a 31khz VGA monitor adaptor (VERY important for hooking the system upto modern monitors). SX Windows (its OS), Street Fighter 2 and Gradius. Here are some pics of the system, it running arcade perfect versions of Street Fighter 2 Dash and Gradius! Also i took pictures of the DOS and SX Windows.

If anyone wants to know more about the system here is a link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharp_X68000

Its a Japanese only system and is refered to as "The Japanese Amiga"! :D Anyway enough waffle its late and i m tired. Maybe i ll write more tomorrow. Here are the pics! :D

Now thats pretty,

I like that - I have always wanted to have a stab at a sharp x68000 - first time I have seen one with a Hardrive too

my thanks indeed my CU_AMiGA =D

rkauer 05 August 2010 05:41

I think you need help from Coze to understand what is written in the screen!:lol

Anyway, it is an awesome system. You sir have my envy.

Hewitson 05 August 2010 07:08

I've always wanted one of these.. Those games look great, hows the sound?

BrooksterMax 05 August 2010 10:00

That is an amazing machine, never heard of it but having read the Wiki page, what a capable machine for its age. Well ahead of its time. Nice work.

Are games easy to find for it?

Bloodwych 05 August 2010 10:20

Wow, I didn't realise they were so big and built like tanks!!!! Very nice machine to own - I would have loved the bragging rights as a kid to own one of those!

Excellent post - thanks for the pics. You can get some Sharpe x68 EMU's for those who want to try it out.

This was basically an arcade board in your home, same duel 68000 CPU's as capcom CPS boards, but it it cost an absolute fortune back in the day - probably why it was never sold abroad.

As such it was perfect for arcade ports, much better suited than the Amiga which mainly had poor ports, but didn't have the range of quality games we came to enjoy. Plus the Amiga has better sounding music, but not as many channels.

Arcade and console style games - this was the king! However you won't find Super Cars, Hybris, Speedball, Turrican, Stuntcar Racer etc or any of those kind of cult games on the system.

I think overall the Amiga was the better all round machine, but the Sharpe had the specs to impress!

Yep! I agree with pretty much everything in this post. It is well built. But the casing and taking out the motherboard, drives, etc is a pain in the ass. Not difficult, but a pain. I had to change the casing cos the original one was cracked and it was a bugger to change. I thought i broke the new case at one point, but got there in the end. I too put the Amiga above this due to its sheer volume of library of games. But this is an arcade machine powerhouse. A sort of computerised version of the Neo-Geo if you will (which i also have! :P). I m surprised Akira hasnt put his 2 cents in this thread he normallly shoots his load when the words Sharp X68000 is mentioned! lol

@8bitbubsy

I got it from an american living in japan, he s on ebay. but i contacted him outside ebay so saved some money! :)

@rkauer

Coze would actually come in handy i got an error message when trying to run SF2 from the HD. Is he japanese? i think i get the installation bit ok.

@Hewitson

The sound is awesome in my opinion. not quite as good as Amiga's as someone said but it has that hard pumping sound that arcade have. My machine is connected to an Amp and speakers so i get it full on! :D Interestingly the machine has a built in speaker!

@BrooksterMax

There are games you can find but there are gems that are more rare and probs pricey. But i m working on trying to download games and put them on the HD! ;) lol

CU_AMiGA 05 August 2010 16:07

oh forgot to mention 2 things... 1) this has a new PSU fitted (as the default are meant to be pretty bad!) and 2) the system isnt as big as it looks! ;)

Don't think it had dual x68000s, just the 68000@10Mhz, loads more ram than the amiga and not sure what in the gfx department.

CPS also was 68000+z80, not dual 68000.

Bloodwych 06 August 2010 02:33

My mistake Silver - friend had one a while back and I swore he said 16Mhz 68000 CPU, so I must have thought dual 7Mhz chips!

I just splurted out the impression I got from it all those years back.

Paul_s 06 August 2010 10:15

now that's nice :)
Might start branching out into the rare stuff meself some day :D

CU_AMiGA 06 August 2010 18:17

i m pretty sure that there were systems that had 68000@10mhz and ones that were overclocked to 16mhz. some even had an 030 fitted! :D

Valken 06 August 2010 19:45

Wow beautiful! I think the top gear consoles back in the days were the Sharp X68000, Amiga, PCE Duo and FM-Towns Marty! I love those old school ports.

Can you please take some hires shots of the case from all sides? I think the X68000 still looks amazing to this day, better than all the ugly pc cases and even better than the stuff from Apple.

Please post some youtube videos of using the OS :) Not been able to find out much about the gui from the web. I always wanted one but couldn't track one down when I lived in Tokyo :(

Sensi 19 July 2011 23:27

Is there anybody here who emulates this system and can recommend me emulation tools (emu, bios ...) plus good and interesting "exclusive" titles?

System that Frederica the Greatest loves must be good for gaming, no doubt about that. Unfortunately I am a Sharp virgin.

Congrats on your purchase CU_AMiGA!

Retro-Nerd 19 July 2011 23:36

WinX68k Highspeed is a decent Sharp X68000 emulator. Exclusive games? Mostly perfect 1:1 Arcade ports like Ghouls'n'Ghosts or Strider.
