Sound effect from The Chaos Engine

Hello everybody

I'm working on an iOS portage of the chaos engine from the bitmap brothers.

Actually, I'm in touch with them to get the rights.

My goal is to recreate the first level the more precisely I can.

I'm looking for the music/sound effects part, but I didn't find anything anywhere.

Could someone help me with this ?

Here is a demo: thechaosengineios on Facebook

Thank you

Olivier

For the CD32 version, the instruments (which includes samples used to make the sound effects) are stored in the *.INS files. The music data is in the *.SNG files. Their exact file format (RJP\Richard Joseph\Vectordean) is mostly unknown, though I did figure out some parts. See http://www.dvdflick.net/storage/ca_song.txt and http://www.dvdflick.net/storage/ca_instrument.txt for some old Visual Basic code that reads song and instrument data.

Edit: found a zip with a brief description of the VectorDean format through the good old Wayback Machine:http://web.archive.org/web/200810060...v1.01a_007.zip

Do you need teh actual sound effects? If yes, then WinUAE lets you automatically rip these as wav files if you activate the ripper from the menu while in game :)

@Cherno I'll test WinUAE, thanks for the tip

@Exl Like you I found music was in rjp format but couldn't find a way to convert them by now

Oxeron - your videos look good (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxU7vt4X7QU), nice to see this opened up for the current gen of new players! :-)

I agree, it's a very nice project.

In case you didn't know, there is a map editor available for Chaos Engine, I guess it would help in recreating the original levels :)

I created a PHP parser to recreate the first level, only 30sec to create the tilemap :)

But custom levels are on my list if the project goes on

You can get the game sfx by running a level in WinUAE, then saving an *uncompressed* save state. Then import this as raw signed 8-bit audio (rate is 8/11Khz?) into your audio editor (e.g. Audacity).

As for game music, I know Swirlything converted a load of the CE musics into Screamtracker format if that helps, you can get the packs from AMP - http://amp.dascene.net/download.php - scroll down to 'Converted Synthetics' section - see RJP (2nd review) for the latest versions of those.

I would also hope that if you are given the green light by Mike M after seeing your proof of concept that he may be able to provide you with all the original game assets - if he still has them, so that you can finish your remake 100%.

Nice link, thank you, I found a lot of music in there.

I tried WinUAE but I didn't manage to get the sfx, still trying (working on mac here)

If someone has them somewhere, I'm interested :)

The sound effects are also stored in main song as subsongs.
You can easily single store each soundeffect in Deliplayer for PC as MP3 or WMV.

I found the "node activated" sfx in @Qube links

I added a background music I found on youtube. It feels good, but it lacks the old music style :)

@mai : I already downloaded Deliplayer, but what do you call the main song ?

1 Attachment(s)
I've attached a 7zip of the first level sfx - please download as I'll need to remove the attachment eventually (it's 1.5 MB). Hope it helps.

I've saved the file out as 16-bit mono WAV, rate is 11025 Hz but it may actually be different in the game I can't recall.

Thank you very much !

I'll try to extract each sound

This is great! I like the health bar that appears! As for sounds, I recall you can get the voices quite easily, but unsure if the other sfx are within the rjp files?

Any other classics in the pipeline, did you do SB2 too?

oxeron 20 May 2013 16:14

SpeedBall2 is already ported to iOs

Hello all, it's been a while :)
I just bought a Logitech gamepad for 8€ and plugged my iOs portage with the controller
It's definitely better with the gamepad ...
