Best Youtube retro Repair & How-to videos
 

Hi:

I like to watch that kind of videos when they are mainly related to retro computers (better C= stuff) and I think that it will be interesting to share some of the best here.

The order that I've selected is just my taste. I'm thinking in the knowledge shown/the quality and time taken to make the video/how much do I like them -sorry but I like more the C= stuff-/how often do I use to like the videos -although there are some- and how often do I watch them again looking for information shown... but all it's taken under my own perspective that likes/uses to change with time. So this order is only related to the last couple of weeks and my poor personal taste.

Edit: Maybe I'll be ordering them with what I've liked more in the last two weeks from time to time, although to tell the truth I mostly watch what I use to like and it's only my poor single opinion, so you better watch them all and decide by your own. That's what recomended.

And also... there are a lot of channels and I won't be watching all of their videos, so remember that being at the bottom of the list only means that surely that channel has been added recently or whatever ;)

I made the thread to know if somebody knows of any other nice enough to tell here.

BTW I like all of them: from the one that makes the very basic with a soldering iron and few more but that also tells and shows his mistakes (you use to learn more seeing them), to for example the last one I found; "Greisis Workbench" that in my opinion looks into the minimum detail with a huge amount of time and effort. I wish he had more videos.

Too bad he's not active in YT currently. But the videos he's made are really interesting. He takes his time explaining the what and the why, and does his due diligence in troubleshooting very well.

Edit: I want to post two things that I've learnt today about repairing a C64:

1 - First time I use the dishwasher to clean a board and it has greatly surprised me -take out the fuse-. What a wonderful job! I've decided to try to repair the C64 board I was using for spares from some years ago (250407 Rev.A with 9 chips socketed), and it was so dirty that I've decided to try it and it has been incredible. I should had taken photos as it was pure crap and now it looks as absolutely new. I first sprayed some vinegar over the board, left for 5 minutes and then... to the dishwasher. I'll only have to clean the external ports contacts with a pencil eraser. If you decide to wash your board in the dishwasher, use a hair dryer later and... let the board to dry for some hours.

2 - If your power on-off button fails, don't lose your time with IPA or Contact cleaner. What it needs is WD-40. Apply some IPA to clean it later.

Did you put the dishwasher on low heat or normal?

Normal and for more time than I usually use; 90 minutes.
One thing: It will delete your paper stickers letters (and colors) if you have them. What a pity in my case.

BTW now that you are reading this, if the metal plate on the cartridge connector in the C64 is rusty, you can use some metal polish paste too (I mean instead of painting it). It's just metal and it will get much better.

Thanks for the tip. I was pleased with how my spray worked out. I tried baking soda and all sorts of things to no avail. I'm not sure polish would've done much other than give the oxidation a nice shine! [emoji6]

Well, it is now much better, but it would be surely better using the dremmel and the polishing paste. Your painted one looks surely better, but I will try to use the dremmel or I will let it like this is. It was very ugly before.

He doesn't have the skills that some other channels can have (well, just like me or you perhaps), but... he's really persistent trying different things. I love it.

He tries to restore ... whatever, so it isn't mainly a retro repair channel (well, to me a PS2 is retro nowadays). Anyway I thinks it's a must to watch his videos just to take a note in the way that he tries to fix things.

Sorry, my thread is about hardware repairs. Maybe it isn't clear, sorry. Is also that channel about that?.

Edit: I've just subscribed to his channel, I like it. But I don't see it as a retro repair channel so I haven't added it to the list.

In my last video I showed the 50/60hz and Eng/Jap switches mod to the Mega Drive. I'm not fully focused on hardware mods but I admit is probably my favorite part of retro gaming so if you get a chance give it a look. As I get more into it I think I probably will start to focus on hardware mods / repairs. To be honest to date the channel is a bit of a mess in terms of content.

I maybe could of explained the mod better at the start but it gets done in the end. The next part will be fixing the PAL60 colours over composite and adding a colour changing LED depending on 50/60hz.

Give it a look if you can but I appreicate its a bit long at 37 minutes. Oh and yes I am aware of the single switch and switchless method. I may revise this to the single method and use what would be the spare switch for a pause.

The next video in this series won't be for a week or so as I've got the other parts I need on order.

Anyway I'm rambling again so I'll leave it at that for now.

Oh I really enjoy watching My Mate Vince and GadgetUK. Despite their lengthy videos they are fascinating to watch. GadgetUK is a wealth of knowledge and anyone looking to do any mods I highly recommend watch him as chances are he's already done it in some form.
