Ultimate WinUAE Machine? Windows 7?

I am buying a new pc. I want the ultimate WinUAE machine.

What OS should I install on it?
Windows XP?
Windows Vista?
Windows 7?

Fastest computer you can afford with an Intel processor and Windows 7, I think that's the future.

Ironclaw 16 August 2009 23:16

I say XP, as that's what I use and I have never had any problems.

TCD 16 August 2009 23:18

Er... doesn't matter? (well except for Portaudio things) Go for Vista or 7, but for WinUAE that doesn't make much difference. It's the hardware that matters.

Ironclaw 16 August 2009 23:23

Well, XP is probably cheaper.... so it makes a difference :). And maybe he can find a cheap version to buy as some people upgrades to the new ones (never me though, EVER).

Edit: also, you don't need a state of the art computer to run everything with WinUAE smooth. My laptop has only 2ghz and I have always run everything perfectly. But this is with XP. I tried Vista once (as my laptop came with it), then I had speed issues. So, if you go with XP, you can also go with a cheaper/slower computer aswell.

XP = cheaper than the others and doesn't require as much computer power as the other versions, so = it's what you want, and it's cheaper.

Not to buy with a new PC (except with a downgrade option = more expensive)
Support ends soon (should have already, Toni will surely support it for a bit longer)
Really if you buy a new Windows PC now there is no reason to 'downgrade' it to XP (this is written on a three year old XP machine btw ;))

Ironclaw 16 August 2009 23:32

I had 15.000 points in a benchmark test on my laptop with XP, but only got about 11.000 with Vista.... + had lots of troubles too, compatibility issues (1+ years ago now though, prolly alot of fixes for vista now). But it's still slow, I'm sure. I prefer everything fast, so you get the speed of the computer you PAY for :). Also, one need some XP experience to make it the best possible.

For me it doesn't matter if WinUAE stop supporting XP, as I'm still using 1.3 :). I only upgrade when needed, same with windows, same with every program I have.

Stable and fast is what I like :P

over and out....

edit, oh yeah... and it's sad every computer today comes with Vista, no matter if u want it or not (unless you buy parts and build it yourself. Luckily I had a copy of XP already form my old laptop, so I just installed over Vista :P, felt goooood.

2009 Hardware = Windows 7. I's that simple.

For many people (which I don't understand why everyone is like that). The latest is not always the best. So lame when something new comes out, and everyone think it's the best and chuck out money to have the latest, when it's not needed.

Well, it's their money and problem.

Enverex 16 August 2009 23:37

XP until Windows 7 is out. Vista is a nightmare and you -will- regret it.

On the other hand, that would be a disgrace for me. XP Pro SP3 is the fastest and most stable system I have tried in ages. If you want to get the best out of your new hardware, you'll be better off running Windows 7 and that's final (avoid Vista at all costs, it's like an alpha for Windows 7 anyways) but I'm one of those people who won't upgrade unless it's absolutely necessary and means, not before 5 or 6 years :)

Retro-Nerd 16 August 2009 23:48

I've a 2005 PC with XP, works like a charm. But of course i will install Windows 7 on my next PC (maybe 2010).

Exactly the same here. Doesn't make sense to buy a new PC and see that programs stop supporting your OS one after another. XP is out of business already as far as official support goes.

Toni Wilen 17 August 2009 08:12

Windows 7. XP is ancient and Vista sucks.

DDNI 17 August 2009 08:26

Did I read correctly that any system shipping wit Vista must now come with a "free" W7 upgrade voucher?

Lockon 17 August 2009 08:48

Latest WinUAE beta running great on Windows 7 Enterprise here.
Yes, final RTM release, legal MAK through SA.
In a yeear, people will forget Vista ever existed.

Not sure if they have to, but yes most companies do that now. Might be that the current OEM package from MS includes the voucher anyway.

Also running Windows 7 Ultimate RTM on one of my PC systems. Far better OS than XP or Vista.

XP was fine but it is time to move on.

In my opinion an OS that comes with the Amiga files system already in the kernel is the right choice, so I say linux.

So the ultimate OS for running WinUAE is Linux? Right :)

(btw, host OFS/FFS support is mostly useless because you still lose comments and partially protection flags. And you should either use directory harddrives or HDF with modern file system like SFS or PFS3, not FFS..)
