Putting Amiga away for a Minimig

I was wondering if there is anyone who took this step - putting the Amiga aside in favour of a Minimig.

The advantages being:

1. Minimig is (extremely) small, brand new hardware
2. Has inbuilt scandoubler
3. Easy to transfer games from PC to minimig using the MMC card

Disadvantages being:

1. No AGA games
2. Not all games work (but its getting there)
3. No HDD support (going to happen soon)

What are your thoughts (from Amiga gaming point of view)?

T_hairy_bootson 22 December 2008 13:40

more disadvantages:

4. Multi disk support is kinda flakey atm.
5. It is still an emulator so compatibility will never be 100%
6. It is the most expensive OCS/ECS machine available.
7. Hdd support will only happen with additional hardware.
8. Ram is very limited atm.

From a gaming point of view, it is no better than any other software emulator in a small device. ie. eeepc, pandora, laptop etc..

Nostromo 22 December 2008 13:43

4. Can be fixed
5. 99% will do :)
6. True
7. True
8. More RAM will come with the additional hardware

I am not sure its completely an emulator. At least, the CPU is real :)

T_hairy_bootson 22 December 2008 13:46

9. SD card can only have limited amount of files and directories
10. SD card requires correctly named files (old dos restrictions)

Nostromo 22 December 2008 13:48

9. Its an MMC card.... and what doesnt have a limit of how many files you can put on it?

10. True, but can be fixed.

The price-performance ratio is bad. I would buy a few A500 machines with additional hardware instead. :)

Erm, it seems like you already made up your mind everblue ;) I would say from a gamers point of view that loosing the ability to play AGA games would be the main reason to keep the 'real deal' :agree

MiniMig will be cool once they move away from the v1.1 PCB.

It needs a big company to step in and create a new FPGA base platform for all the forth coming FPGA cores. Spend a little money porting the many cores out there to the platform. Amstrad, Spectrum, C64, Atari 800, Atari ST, Amiga all have FPGA cores which would be usable.

Mass production. Even with ACube doing a great job at reducing the costs, the profit margins are such that at £120 it just cannot compete with a £10 A600.

An A600 with a CF card to transfer games from the PC is just too easy to use and too cheap.

I just meant to say it is still an emulator and has issues like any other emulator. I was not comparing emulators to the "real thing (c)2001 Akira"

Also by the file and folder limit I mean it is limited to 80? files and folders or something regardless of SD card size isnt it?

Disadvantages:
11. Cant connect it to a TV unless the TV has VGA input. edit: or RGB SCART (thanks alexh)

Advantages:
4. Can connect real amiga joystick/mice without additional hardware.
5. Can connect optical mice without additional hardware.

After all is said and done, I would love to have one to play around with, just not at the current prices. :agree

MiniMig works with any TV which as an RGB SCART input.

Well I think I will have both :)

A minimig and an A1200 - I have started this thread just to see what other people's opinions are, certainly not to start a war or something :o

We are all amigans here :crazy

So thats like 10% of tvs outside of europe.

I am not here to start any wars either, I would love a minimig, I just couldnt justify it at the moment with its current feature set vs. price.

£10 A600? Where?

And to be fair, we're comparing a Minimig with an A600/500 with a scandoubler :)

But all new TVs have VGA input now :)

I'm sorry if it sounded like I accused you that you wanted to start a war on this one, just wanted to say that it seems you have thought about this before ;)
Guess it's a good decision (given you have the money) to keep your Amiga and buy a Minimig too :agree

Retro-Nerd 22 December 2008 14:13

A scandoubler is an additional feature, not a must.
