Amiga.org still down?

Hi all,
Amiga.org is still down and was only meant to be down for 7-10 days but its been longer than that. Does anyone know what's going on?

Overflow 13 June 2018 12:59

2 more weeks....

nogginthenog 13 June 2018 20:11

Was this GDPR related? I assume so since they went down on 25th May.
I know they are the 'competition' but it would be sad to see them go. Olaf B & Thor seemed to prefer amiga.org

Amiga.org Lights Still Out

Anyone know when the lights will get turned back on @ Amiga.org?

DamienD 13 June 2018 23:22

Not sure how you missed today's similar thread Pyromania?

...merged ;)

Pyromania 14 June 2018 00:46

Whooops, sorry I missed that one.

Yes, because it is crap to protect the online/digital rights of citizens.

Spot on dude. GDPR is a good thing and much needed.

I assume yes

from what they post it seems they want to use a modern system and have to transfer data and that is not that easy

Well no, you cannot. That's the point of the GDPR in fact. It might be problematic for many companies/website but that is mostly because of how pervasive, invasive and unavoidable our online activity is tracked and monetised.

All other usage online has fallen by the wayside, even paid for website track your activity and sell the data.

Smaller boards such as Amiga.org, eab, etc get caught up in the sweeping rules that GDPR imposes but the goal of it reflects the scale of the problem.

The idea is good - the actual law is catastrophic.

(Especially how it is implemented here in Germany - make a small mistake in your page and any lawyer can send you a >1000€ bill.
In Germany you have to pay the opponents lawyer for cease-and-desist warnings...)

GDPR is mainly for the corporate side of internet, but what protects the user from the government mirrors of internet traffic?

How the NSA tracks you

Bill Binney will talk about his experiences as Technical Director at the NSA where he had a 34 yr career.
I advice against watching the video linked above if you want to maintain some kind of illusion about your country only tracking "bad guys", check SIGINT partner countries in the attached image. Truth is they dump all traffic, and every partner country have fiber taps, dumping and saving the data indefinitely.

If it doesn't encrypt, don't connect to it.

I hate having to make this exception for the EAB. What's taking RCK so long to enable HTTPS on here?

Bruce Abbott 15 June 2018 10:29

The government can see what pages I am viewing on EAB? This blatant invasion of privacy is intolerable!

I bet they also have my password and have been logging in to my account. Those inflammatory posts weren't me! (this one too).

It's not a straightforward process, and becomes more complicated when you have multiple sites (especially if you need to deal with older browsers that don't support SNI - you need 1 IP per site). I'm sure it'll be done eventually, but given he's already in the middle of a server migration atm, I think he has enough on his plate.

Besides, it's not like this is a banking site is it? And you wouldn't be daft enough to use the same password here as you do on other sites surely ;)

Its taking longer than planned. Its not as simple as everyone thinks. It also needs updating. You do realise the DB alone is 2GB+.
We have started work on it, we will get it back online as fast as possible.
