CD32 Amiga Community Compilation - please help!

This has actually, finally been released. Final list of games and demos is on the blog post.

Hi all,

I've been contacted by one of the organisers of the upcoming AmiWest conference (from the 23rd to the 26th of October in Sacremento, http://amiwest.net/) about the possibility of demonstrating a new CD32 project at the conference. So we thought that it'd be a good idea to assemble some PD/Freeware/Shareware/Demo games from the past few years to show off what the community has been up to.

It's going to be bit of a rush job so I'd really appreciate beta testers, game suggestions, and help getting some of the games on my "wish list" to run.

This is what's currently in there:

GAMES
  1. Amiganitzu
  2. Asgard Met Vikings
  3. Back to the Golden Age ST (using Joy2Key2 for pad support)
  4. Bomber
  5. Boxx
  6. Catagon
  7. Donkey Downfall
  8. Downfall
  9. Dust Digger
  10. Enemy 2
  11. Final Fight AGA (Alpha)
  12. Flappy Bird
  13. Four Maze
  14. Gauntlet ST (using Joy2Key2 for pad support)
  15. Joust ST
  16. Key Master
  17. Kim Pong Il
  18. Magic Ball
  19. Marco Gregorio's Adventures to Unusual Places
  20. Metro Cross ST
  21. Memo
  22. Mobius Goatlizard DX
  23. Og AGA
  24. Parachute
  25. Solomon's Key ST
  26. Sqrx 1
  27. Sqrx 2
  28. Szalter
  29. Tracker Hero AGA (I had to take out around six tracks to fit in memory but the ones that are left should all load)
  30. Where Time Stood Still ST
  31. Wolfenstein 3D (WIP CD32 version)
  32. X-Mas Disaster

DEMOS
  1. 2nd Wave
  2. Emperor of the North Pole
  3. Old Habits Die Hard
  4. Sun Glasses at Night

INTROS: Shadow of the Beast Intro AGA (24-bit fades)

I haven't yet sought permission from any of the developers to ask if it's OK to include their game - if it's not OK to include yours, please let me know and I'll remove it.

If you've got a WIP or new game that'll work on a CD32 and you'd like it included, please let me know and I'll have a look at it.

Edit: I've uploaded a beta version of this but I can't post the download link publicly at this stage - please let me know via here or PM if you're willing to test it and I'll pass you the download link, thanks.

Putty Squad - but I'm afraid it will need more ram than plain cd32 got.
Mobius Goatlizard DX - new version, same adictitve as original.
Og AGA version by Confused Pelican - hard game but looks very nice.

ransom1122 14 October 2014 08:58

Looks like a good compilation of games there & gratz for the contact from AmiWest conference, look forward to hearing more

earok 14 October 2014 09:10

Thanks - Mobius Goatlizard is actually the DX version (I've updated the post to that effect). Will look into Og. Putty Squad would be amazing but I didn't put that on the wishlist just because of the difficulty that would be required to get it to work.

DDNI 14 October 2014 09:14

Tanx would be a good addition.
Just need to check the controls don't need a keyboard.

earok 14 October 2014 12:43

Og's in the collection now.

@DDNI Tanx works on the CD32 well (so long as you've got a mouse, it's actually one of the bonuses we chucked in with our Worms collection). But at this stage I'm just sticking to games that are recent, or like Og surfaced recently.

Cammy 14 October 2014 19:20

I'm so glad you're making this CD, I think it's a great idea to compile many recently-produced homebrew Amiga games together to play on the CD32. Here are some other games that should work if you'd like to include them:

Parachute - http://aminet.net/package/game/misc/AmigaParachute (LCD Game& Watch conversion)
Boxx - http://aminet.net/package/game/jump/Boxx (Platform game. Just copy the files off the ADF)
MEMO - http://aminet.net/package/game/think/MEMO (Match pairs of Amiga game characters)
Kim Pong Il - http://aminet.net/package/game/2play/KimPongIl (2-player Pong works with joypads)
Amiganitzu - http://aminet.net/package/game/misc/amiganitzu (Puzzle game)
Marco Gregorio's Adventures to Unusual Places - http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=73383 (Platform game with CD32 version already)

Wish list of games I'd like to include but otherwise having problems with:
  • Solid Gold - works but WHDLoad slave takes a long time to load?
  • Tales of Gorluth demo won't fit in 2mb RAM? Update: Managed to get this working for a short way into the game by replacing the music/sound files with the smallest ones that come with Backbone, but still crashes shortly into the game and it really needs a 68030 to be playable, I'll leave it out.
  • Where Time Stood Still - possible to access inventory screen without keyboard?

Would you like a specifically CD32 version of Where Time Stood Still?

Also I updated the original Shadow of the Beast intro to have 24bit fades to make it a little more AGA that runs from AmigaDOS, you can use that if you want?

earok 14 October 2014 22:50

@Cammy Thanks for the suggestions, looks like all of them will work.

@Galahad CD32 version of Where Time Stood Still would be amazing :) I'm definitely very keen to see the SOTB intro too.

Beast intro in the zone, packed with RAR, unpack and it will run as is.

As for WTSS CD32, if someone could supply me with a nice CD32 joypad image so I can insert it during the load process to show what buttons do what, that would be useful ;)

earok 15 October 2014 08:14

Cheers, I'll ask Steve if he can put one together. I take it you want it in 640x480? (Edit: Also, do you have a palette?)

What did you have in mind for mapping the buttons? Something like -

Red: Action
Blue: Menu
Green: M / Music
Yellow: F3 / Screen Redraw
Reverse: F5 / Spectrum Mode
Forward: F6 / Speed Throttle
Play: F1 / Language

?

As per the updated post there's a few more games, plus a few demos and an intro too. I've uploaded it but I can't share the link publicly (yet) please let me know here or via PM if you're willing to test it and I'll pass you the link, cheers.

I've been dragging my heels on this a bit, so I'm going to finish it and launch it publicly on Christmas day. There's some cool stuff in it that isn't (AFAIK) available anywhere else, such as Galahad's CD32 specific version of Where Time Stood Still. I've recently added Renegades Deluxe and I will try Love Dungeon too. Please let me know if there's anything additional I should add.

dakidski 21 December 2014 03:07

Cool. Looking forward to it.

kriz 21 December 2014 13:24

Great for xmas !!

wmsteele 22 December 2014 21:58

Fantastic news, WTSS looks brilliant, another amazing release for the CD32.

Leon 23 December 2014 02:57

I just noticed a list of games that you are planning to put on the CD.
I'm sorry that Bomber, Magic Ball and Szalter are in an early stage, unfortunately I am not a programmer and I can't finish them.

This is sad but I have 7 of unfinished projects:
Bomber - playable version (but not finished),
Magic Ball - working well under WinUAE but on my A3000 crashed during the game.
Besides collision in Backbone is tragic. Waiting for Amiga Game Creator to finish this game,
Szalter - playable version (but not finished) - I created graphics for 2nd part but I'm not a programmer,
Crazy Crane - playable version, Source code in C is available but I can't find programmer,
Apollo17 - only graphics,
Grand Prix - only graphics,
Easter Egg - only tiles tested in Backbone.

For a few years I am looking for programmers to finish these projects but I fail.

earok 23 December 2014 03:05

Thanks Leon, I knew Magic Ball was yours but didn't know Bomber and Szalter were too. I thought they were fine games as they were and they seemed to work well on CD32 (though Magic Ball is a touch slow, like most Backbone games on stock CD32). I think I used "joy2key2" on those so you can access menus, pause etc without needing a keyboard.

I hope you can find a programmer here to help you.

Gordon 23 December 2014 10:25

Not sure if it qualifies buts....

Atom Smasher

earok 23 December 2014 10:46

Too old, sorry mate. The only game I've got in the compilation from the 90s is Ogg AGA (and only because it's only recently surfaced again).
