Amiga Mini Teased

Quote:

With the resurgance of retro gaming hardware enabling us to play old classics on big TV's with lots of built in games such as the NES Mini, SNES Mini, Playstation 1 Classic, NEO GEO Mini,PC Engine Mini and the C64 Mini you'd be forgiven in thinking there wasn't much else to get excited with all the mini's being announced. Well The C64 crew have something to shout about and in a pretty big way, as today they have teased what looks to be an Amiga mini coming 2021 from RetroGames Ltd!

Ooo bloody hell that's good news!

Can only be a good thing to bring in more people in and back to the Amiga scene.

roondar 12 October 2020 17:25

That does look interesting. Though they don't really do anything a good emulator doesn't do, I've actually always liked the mini-console idea. Curse my nostalgia I suppose :D

True, but its not for people who think like that, its the ease of use, and plug and play nature what attracts people.

It'll be the same hardware as the Retro64, a basic Allwinner Sunxi ARM System-on-Chip less powerful than a Pi, probably running UAE but contributing nothing back.

The main guy behind the company was one of the Spectrum Vega lot who left before it all imploded. He went on to claim he bought a whole load of retro rights. I first came across him when he claimed to have bought the rights to the Sam Coupe from Mel Croucher. The Sam Coupe - a computer that sold less than 4,000 units in it's lifetime. He started mouthing off about 'protecting his marks' at the Sam Coupe community who'd been releasing things for decades with Sam in the name and the Sam robot.

For people who have more money than sense, this will be fine. But it'll be worse than a Rasbperry Pi 4 at multiples of the cost.

If this happen it is only for the good. More hardware, more software sales and therefore more attractive for devs.

This would have to be priced quite high to cover the cost of buying the rights to the Amiga name and kickstarts and it's not like this is Nintendo or Sega who own tons of games they can put on it. This will either be vaporware or be a load of underpowered shyte with a bunch of piss poor games on it imo.

I see that people are already crapping on it before it is even officially announced. Off to a good start.

I use my Mister FPGA anytime over my C64 Mini, my C64 Mini has been unused for many many months now.

Too many reasons why Mister is better then C64 Mini :agree

Pyromania 13 October 2020 01:04

Let’s see what ends up coming out.

The only Mini I have is the NES mini, which just like you has been unused! :crying

The things that will be interesting for me are:
  • Keyboard/mouse - can you have an Amiga without a working keyboard and mouse ? Will it have have a nice keyboard ?
  • Licensing - Really interested to see how they navigate this minefield
  • Performance - I am not sure I have seen any ARM based Amiga emulator that doesn't suffer slowdown in at least some rare cases (mostly when dealing with extreme copper effects), will they crack this or just make it work for the majority case.

gulliver 13 October 2020 01:34

Trying to stay positive on the subject:

It may provide for an Amiga type case for a Raspberry Pi (at a premum price though).

If the "Amiga Maxi", like the C64 Maxi gets released, it will help us all to get case and keyboard repacements for our Amigas.
