New Amiga Games?

Over on the World of Spectrum Forums not a week goes by without someone announcing a new game for the rubber-keyed-chum, and some of the recent releases have been absolutely stunning - either pushing the machine in ways previously not thought possible, or by just being great fun.

I can't see anything like that in the Amiga scene (perhaps I'm not looking in the right place?), and just wondered if this is one area where the Amiga scene is currently lacking.

Rummaging around Aminet, there seems to be the odd game uploaded every now and then, but nothing compared to the extent of the Spectrum scene.

I agree, but cannot add anything to what I had already said in the thread TCD has linked. :)

(I know your in the 'scene' 'n stuff, but we already sorted that... I think...)

Jimbo 27 October 2010 21:30

8 bit ftw :)

MazinKaesar 27 October 2010 22:21

Someone last year released games for C64 and an oldschool RPG for Vic20!!! Why don't create a new game for Amiga? :(

Cammy 27 October 2010 22:47

I think people expect a lot more from an Amiga game than they do from a Spectrum game, so they take a lot more effort to make. I also think the 8bit scene appreciates the games they get far more than the Amiga scene, since nearly any game that does come out for the Amiga is ignored or overlooked by the majority of the community. They may play the game, but very few people give feedback and the makers of these games lose motivation to work on them anymore.

The conclusion I came to long ago was this: If no one out there is making Amiga games, then I'll just have to make them myself!

Learn to code, pixel, compose, design or write and team up with someone else motivated enough to make new games, it can be a lot of fun and it's really rewarding to see people enjoying your creations.

i'm currently working on a new amiga game. I'm hoping it to be a flashback style platform run and gun platform game that will run on any amiga system with 2meg mem. I'm in the process of making up a backbone version of the game to get a feel of how it will play and look. Eventually I intend to make the entire thing in AMOS PRO and get it running as smoothly as possible. I would also love to remake some modern titles with an amiga twist. Call of Duty in a cannon fodder style or something similar.

Asman 27 October 2010 23:39

I'm currently also work on new/old amiga games. It's port of atari 8 bit game. My friend recoded atari 8 bit asm sources into c++ and I'm trying to porting to Amiga. It's my first and probably last meeting with amiga os api, because it's too slow for my target platform ( mean A500/A1200 ). And I think that game should fly on naked A500. Now I'm trying to speed up game + fix bugs and other things.

And the last I've no idea when I finish this game...

Asman, you could try to port my version of Bagman remake (roughly converted from resourced Z80 asm to C++ gcc 4) to Amiga without SDL (SDL is slow on classic Amigas)

http://jotd.pagesperso-orange.fr/bagman/index.html

but it's 8-bit style so as Cammy says people are expecting more, but it's just too hard & frustrating to produce old days 16 bit quality games for the Amiga right now using the 199x techniques (trackloader/blitter/hardware banging/assembler...)

Jimbo 28 October 2010 21:44

Also my joking about 8bit machines apart. Do you ever check Aminet? Lots of new games go on there as well. No idea of quality

Madcrow 30 October 2010 02:39

Most new "Amiga" games these days seem to be recompiles of SDL-based Linux games. It would be nice if the A500 would get the same kind of love that the Speccy or the C64 (or even the MSX), though. Maybe we ought to do like the MSX community and encourage development by means of contests with actual prizes and stuff..

kriz 30 October 2010 02:44

Hope some will sell some new Amiga games also, cd pressing these days is cheap and can be done in small quantity...

Lorfarius 02 November 2010 17:41

I have a copy of Easy AMOS lay around but it's probably a pipe dream. I guess you just need someone who is in it for more than the money but is good at art/sprite work as well as coding. I can barely draw stick men in MSPaint so that's me out!

alkis21 03 November 2010 17:40

Well, you can always give my game a try...

It's "lend", my Germanian chum :) You borrow from someone and lend to someone.

When you gonna teach me some more German!? I'm still stuck on 'Zweibeln' ;)

TCD 03 November 2010 19:16

Ah, 'lend'... I should borrow a dictionary from you. If you're willing to lend it that is :spin ;)

You're not on IRC, so 'Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft' will have to wait until you return :)

Don't worry, there'll be a 'C64 retro wave' (such as last couple years) for Amiga, in time. But admittedly it's kind of hard and strange, since Amiga wasn't quite bad enough to be fully retro. If you *can* use the OS and enjoy it, if the games aren't mainly 'flick the sprite left, press jump THIS 1/50th second', and if you can create wonderful sound and graphics, it's right there in the kind of no man's land between camp and pro.

There's a big step between a photo and pixelgraphics, mp3 and SID song on C64, but on Amiga the difference is quite small.

One pillar of hope is the demoscene, where there are at least a few guys who know the limitations of the hardware and therefore can appreciate the efforts and magic of releases a cut above the rest. They (we) are one major source of renewal.

If it helps you any, the authors of Hybris/Battle Squadron are coming to Datastorm 2011. Compare that with the C64 scene. I doubt they'd get Archer MacLean, Rob Hubbard, Jeff Minter, or Andrew Braybrook to come to a demoparty. Even if I'd love that and be sure to show up at that party :)

Or maybe do some Amigastuff for the scene? That always cheers me up :)

Predseda 04 November 2010 20:33

I am sad that this promising game was canned :( http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=32545
