Best Spectrum emulator

Hi all,

I know this forum is for Amiga people, but I am trying to find out what you guys think is the best Amiga spectrum emulator - I currently have an A1200 040 Blizzard PPC and I am trying to find out which would run best on this hardware.

Given that I used a Spectrum before an Amiga, it would be very interesting to see if they have come on since I last used ZXAM way back in 97!

Cheers guys.

Chris

I've used ASp in the past and found it to be a very good emulator. Runs very well on an '040 so I recommend it, it does need AHI for sound though and something like BlazeWCP is essential on AGA if not the display is seriously messed up.

alexh, that fuse link seems to be for OS4 only?

crispywotsits 24 August 2008 17:46

Thanks guys, probably should have mentioned that I've got a BVision as well and that I'd probably prefer to run it in OS 3.9 (even though I have OS 4) - I think I did try to get Fuse running on OS4 but I think I had some difficulty, and even then I don't think it was optimised for the classic hardware speed disadvantage.

Thanks
Chris

Also, DDNI, I did try to get in contact with you via email at one point, but not sure if you got the message or not - about Amiga users in Northern Ireland etc

Back in 1998/1999 I used Code Busters' CBSpeccy emulator which you can find here. It was pretty fast on my 030/50 and had no problems to run most demos. I don't know how well it works with 040/060 CPU's though.

I found ZXAM to be most enjoyable, ran some 48k classics on it and it felt like the real thing on my color TV. You can also run ZXAM in a window on WB if that is your fetisch.

Sensi 26 August 2008 13:02

I still use X128 :)

vulture 27 August 2008 12:03

CBSpeccy is the fastest 128k for up to 030 machines and supports Pentagon timings, usefull for demos with pentagon-specific timings. ZXLive is also good and still under development. X128 is very compatible , but slow for anything below 060. ZXAM is very good and feature rich, but only supports 48k + AY chip music. The king of the hill, and really, you need to look no further if you have 040+ machine, is ASp. It pretty much runs anything you throw at it, it emulates everything usefull a real Speccy had and it's still under development so you may send your ideas to Ian Greenway (the author) for improvement.

In conclusion, if you're on 040+ machine go for ASp. If you need pentagon timings and some other unique stuff go for CBSpeccy. If you're on 030 or less, CBSpeccy again, but install ASp as well as it's more compatible with certain programs and with some good tweaking it runs very decently on 030@50+AGA. If you get hold of a previous version of ASp, can't recall the exact version, was it 0.77 or maybe even earlier? Anyway, what I was saying, with that version ASp uses a direct AGA screen which is very fast on 030 and less. You may ask the author directly for that version. IMO install both ASp and CBSpeccy, you'll find yourself using ASp most of the time if you're on 040+, but CBSpeccy may be handy for some weird stuff you may come across. It's the other way around if you're on 030 or less.

Cool. I didn't think anyone used it, except me ;)

Requires a 68060 + preferably a gfx card.
I never could get it running faster...

In case you haven't guessed, I'm the guy who ported it from DOS :cool

for the Amiga the best spectrum emulator is ASP...however ZXAM is a good emulator..but it can't emulate 128k

for the PC the best spectrum emulator is ZXspin

Coagulus 28 August 2008 11:38

Yeah, I had great fun with ZXam on my 030 A1200. Mind you the old Spectrum emulator (I think it was Peter Mcgavin's but could be wrong) gave me some good times before expansion too.

On the PC ZXSpin rules. On my DS, ZXDS is more used than actual DS games!

zxlive emu updated :) on aminet http://aminet.net/package/misc/emu/ZXLive

_psy 24 September 2012 11:52

anyone manage to play zynaps on zxam ?
all the roms i try resets the spectrum emu when the gameplay starts :/

if someone has Asp emulator version below 0.8 can upload it to the zone to try it? cause all the versions of the site starts with 0.82 which is very slow :/ on 1230 , thank you

_psy 01 October 2012 15:49

Hello , i contacted Ian Greenway creator of ASp emulator and he was very friendly and kind enough to search and find an older version of his emu (version 0.75b) which is now posted on his site!
I confirm that this version is much faster than the other ones on my 1230/50 but with not so complete emulation as the latest version,
tested speed difference in zynaps & cybernoid 2 128k (main screen-music speed) with other versions.

Thanks Ian!
