minimig

hi all iv not been on here for a long time just picked up o the minimig and want one are they any good is it worth me getting rid of my 500 and my 1200 to get one or do i stick with the 1200 ?

all i do is play games when i have time the 500 is still in its box from when i moved and the 1200 been setup but never user at the moment beacuse i have to go into the loft to get to it.

my plans on the 1200 was to get 3.1 roms and a ide adapeter this year to try and run 3.9 on it but looking at the minimig i could just run it on the tv and play it when i want.

thanks james

if you don't want to play AGA games I'd say the Minimig is good to go... there are a few compatibility problems with some games, but those are slowly being looked at by developers :)

Else you could consider an IDE -> CF adapter in your 1200 and install WHDLoad to run the games off of the CF card, that is a very nice solution too... oh and if you don't have an accellerator card, I'd consider sticking with one of Bloodwych's ClassicWB builds ;)

Just my 2 cents there :)

Keep in mind the minimig has no way of saving back to the SD card yet.

And it's damn expensive. And it is not 100% compatible. And it's only got 1.5Mbytes of RAM. And there is no hard drive (yet).

FWIW:
I think the minimig is great but only really for 'tinkerers' at the mo'.

A1200 + CF Adapter(s) + '30 accelerator + 8mb + WHDLoad would probably be an ideal minimum for easy games playing + software transfer...
...also not so cheap! (you already have?)

Another option could be a CD32.
There are some nice compilations about that should work on the base hardware so you wouldn't be looking @ lots of money. The 'trick' is to make sure you use very good quality media (there are threads on the EAB) as the CD32's laser can be a bit picky. (also upgradeable)
My CD32 gets much more use than either of my A1200s - one of which is prodigiously upgraded...

WinUAE?
At the risk of once again bringing up a long-running debate. :rolleyes
There are so many advantages and unless you're seriously into your retro-hardware (some of us are ;)) it's hard to think of a down side.

ok thanks for the info i will keep with my 1200 had a go on it today just putting a 40gb hdd in ill get some 3.1 roms for that and a 4 way ide i just like the idea i could have it by the tv in the living room and it looks diffrent but if its not compatible i will wait and see if anything comes better from it.

it be good if you could use the sd card as a hdd or have a cf like in the 600/1200's

thanks james

User selectable 31/15khz.

31Khz for modern Monitors.
15khz for Amiga monitors.

VGA output is a good thing if you don't have IT administrator privileges at your work or simply don't want to get busted for installing UAE.

Just plug the Minimig into your existing monitor, keyboard & mouse! :D
