Space Harrier for...Atari 8 Bits?

On again, off again (as of Mid 2008) conersion of a classic game to a classic platform.
Nice sound too!!

Even if they say that they have removed the flicker and there's a blur on the vid... damn that really looks very nice :great Really smooth and quite amazing for an Atari XL/XE ;)

tomcat666 05 February 2009 12:06

I tried the version that you can download on a real XE and the flickering was really substantial... eyes hurt a lot. And thats on a 1084II monitor - normal CRT. The videos witht he blurring effects don't really show how the real game looks like. I would trade in the flickering for a bit of bluriness any time.
A great game otherwise... just the flickering is horrible.

What is it like on a old CRT TV though? Looks fab otherwise, makes the other 8bit conversions look somewhat lacking in comparison.

The Atari 800 XL was a really decent gaming platform. I still wonder why the UK & France user were so obsessed by the ZX Spectrum and CPC machines. Only the color palette looks a bit strange in some games.

Don't forget Yoomp!: ;)

Spectrum because it was cheap I think, the CPC did have nice colourful graphics.

Space Harrier in Amiga... aah.. ;-)

IIRC here in Italy (or just my local area) in 1990 C64 was cheapest than Z-Spectrum.. and Space Harrier for c64 was too expensive for a 10 age child :)

I love the CPC's colours. Not good for scrolling games, but the graphics were much better than an Atari, Acorn, Speccy, Apple, or C-64.

The CPC graphics are only colorful, this giant pixels looks somewhat disturbing. The MSX2 was probably the best 8-Bit computer for graphics.

Ever since I got to try space raiders on an 800 in a local computer store around Christmas 81/82 I was an atari 8-bit computer fan. :agree

Certainly here in the UK, around 82/83 the spectrum was about £130, the commodore64 £250, and the Ataris were the same price as the BBC (£299/399). You could save up for a spectrum with a paper round (or like me, evening/weekend after school job), the others, your parents had to pay for (and they tended to go for the BBC).

Commodore I think succeed with the 64 because of of a mix of price, power, being cheaper than the BBC, business links and games from the USA.

The Atari 800, priced exactly the same as the BBC just got hammered as the parent pound went to Acorn (which had BBC and School endorsements). It hung on but was not the success it should have been.

I never understood why the CPC range did so well, don't get me wrong, it was a very good machine (and quite expandable), but Sinclair, Commodore and Acorn had pretty much annihalated the competition in the years 1982/3. Once established, inertia did the rest to keep them top machines untill the arrival of the 16 bits. The CPC should have failed but somehow it bucked the trend and hung on in there :shocked.

After the spectrum i worked to save up for at school, I finally got my hands an an Atari 800XL from dixons with my first pay packet from my first full time job!

Best of luck with the project, I hope to play it on my 130xe at some point!

The Sam Coupe was the best 8-bit computer for gfx, it was just a little late. By about 10 years. Yoomp is amazing and the Space Harrier is an incredible achievement.

No it wasn't!

Sam Coupe = 256×192*16 colours
Enterprise 128 = 180x80*256 colours
MSX2 = 256×212*256 colours
MSX2+ = 256×212*19268 colours

8 bit? MSX is king. True, the pixels/resolution was not the best point about the CPC. Some games look very nice, though. Gabriel, for one.
