A question about crystal oscillators...

Are 14-pin DIL and 8-pin DIL crystal oscillators interchangeable, other than their physical size?

I'm having difficulty finding a 80Mhz 14-pin DIL crystal oscillator for my Apollo 1260 but I notice that AmigaKit have the 8-pin DIL version in stock. Can I use the 8-pin DIL version using some kind of home-made mod?

Perhaps the two kinds are technically different, and not just physically different, but I have no idea.

Thanks!
Steve.

I would suggest try it m8, i cannot see that much harm comming, just make sure it the right way aligned in the slot

If you have the space a simple bit of vero-proto board would do the trick to change the package from 8 to 14 DILL spacing.

Some XTals may require differing current compared to one another, so check to see if the in line capacitance is the same as the one your replacing, (argualbe at the level we are here, its not much more than 30pf - picofarrads)

When overclocking the 060, bare in mind that differing revisions will react differently, you may get luck and all will be fine, however, you may need to increase the core voltage to the CPU, as some 060's require nearly 5 volts to push 80mhz reliably (note those are the really old cores though)

As the regualtor on the Apollo is detachable, Dimlow a fellow hardware hacker here has provided a really good description of the regualtor circuit, so from this one should be able to modify it as needed really!

best of luck m8, take lots of pics please

I've recently put a MC68060RC60 71E41J Revision 6 on my Apollo 1260, and it's already running at 66MHz without getting particularly hot (I'm using a copper heatsink from a 1u server), hence why I thought it would be interesting to see if I can reach 80MHz, and then maybe even 100MHz!

I'll order from AmigaKit and give it a go!

Steve.

Strange, jump in price from 70Mhz to 80Mhz, more than double!
