Whats the best way to cut a hole in an A1200 Trapdoor
As the subject says:
![]() I need to cut a square hole in my A1200's trapdoor to allow the fan/heatsink on my accelerator card to poke through. I dont want to do a botch job on the plastic trapdoor. What tools would you recommend that would allow me to cut a clean hole in the trapdoor? Mark

Dremmel. Just be careful. Cutting wheel to begin with, just inside the line you want, then use sander/filer to slowly carve back to the line.

Surely it would be best to drill a patchwork of holes? You can easily clamp the plastic and use a household drill.

Unfortunately the heatsink fan protrudes out of the bottom the case slightly, so I would have to cut a hole anyway. And I would like the rest of the trapdoor space covered to keep dust and whatnot out.

Bah, use some masking tape. It's even the right colour ;-)

@mfletcher
A good solid rotary tool will do... use a small cutting disk AND importantly heres a handy tip, use some electric insulating tape over the plastic, then markout your cutting area on that with pen. cut just in the line, as the ABS plastic swarf is hot it will stick to the insulating tape, and not back onto the plastic

Hello mfletcher!
I used aluminum tape, the same one usually used in heating tubes, to avoid dust from getting inside Amiga it also serves along with some glue to keep the heasink in place,the heatsink is under, and a small fan can also be added, although you will have to lift amiga feet a little; if you add a fan you will have to lift them even more. In my case the heatsink is enough, i estimated its size for an environmental temperature of 15 to 17 degrees Celsium (59 to 62.6 farenheit). I uploaded an example below. I hope it helps. http://img519.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fot0zp9.jpg This heatsink is for a Blizzard IV running a 50 mhz 68030 CPU with no FPU Last edited by Yoto; 18 June 2008 at 01:35. |
