Does anyone know what Sega controllers work on the Amiga 500 besides the Master System ones?

What about Genesis controllers? I think it's the US version of the Mega Drive so will they work on a PAL Amiga? I guess so, but want to be 100% sure before I buy anything.

Thanks.

yup, the 6-button megadrive/genesis pads will work fine and are the best out there IMHO :)

Are these ones good:

http://ebay3.ipixmedia.com/abc/M28/_EBAY_f721ef9decef6ca4f9136683adc64444/i-1.JPG

They seem to be the easiest to get.

Or should I get some original Sega ones?

You will most 9 pin input devices of the 90s such as the Sega joypads will work.

I would recommend the 6 button official joypad for the megadrive like rattus says.

I would not go for the superpad or any other 3rd party pad, even an official 3 button sega megadrive pad would be far better, or even the arcade sticks are good.

Any controllers will work regardless of whether they were for PAL/NTSC machines.

Go for the *original* Sega Genesis/Megadrive 3 or 6 button joypads. Be careful of fakes!

Those joypads are by far the best ever.
Oh, keep in mind you won't be able to use most of the buttons, so pick the one that is more comfortable to you. Personally I preffer the 6 button model.

there are some psx joypad to sega 16 bit converters out there, I wonder if they work on Amiga?

As mentioned in another thread (http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?s=&postid=105088#post105088) there are DIY instructions for a PSX to Amiga/CD32 converter on Aminet :D

I just need to convince somebody to build an adapter for me...;)

My Amiga DIY to-do list now has:
ps/2 keyboard adapter
ps/2 mouse adapter
PSX joypad adapter

All of which need PIC chips, so I'm planning on getting a PIC programmer. I was thinking, once I've made these for myself, of offering to make them for others... but I have a feeling this will be a while off... :)

You should see my DIY Amiga build list I started to make since 1996 when I found out about the hardware hacking zone in Aminet :)

Only built some basic tower conversions since then :sad

nah, I was thinking more along the lines of this one:

http://www.levelsix.com/products/pc/PSPC_miniUSB2_V.shtml

some peeps on another mac forum have tried it out and aparently it works a treat with OSX's HID manager and USB Overdrive (not sure about rumble support though, but I can live without it)...I also have a nice transparent "graphite" PSone DualShock lying around that will match my G4 perfectly :p

geez...us mac users...its always about the aesthetics :D

And sorry for hijacking the thread! back on topic now...;)

Whats so different about this one?

And what is HID?

rattus
29 May 2003, 02:31
HID = Human Interface Device

it means you plug it in and it just works, no drivers needed.

And this one is smaller and therefore cuter :p

Since I sold my A500 & only kept my CD32, I'm limited in how many hacks I can build for it :(
Was looking at the CD32 FDD hack, but that involves soldering directly on the mainboard :eek

I just bought a used SEGA Mega Drive controller at 6 € for my A500 :) It's a same kind as in this pic:

http://www.ntrautanen.fi/computers/other/images/sega_md2.jpg

Funny that on my pad is a text: COMPUTER VIDEO GAME CONTROL PAD. Computer...? Well, now this treasure is used with COMPUTER, hah. Must try and test it...

Old Fool

OH MY... Now I found a real picture that is EXACTLY the same as mine.

http://www.syntaxerror.nu/joy011.jpg

In this web page they give it one star of five!? This would explain that 'computer' text if this succer is only a COPY of real Sega game pad... Well, it was only 6 euros.

Finally: I would appreciate info is it safe to plug this bastard to Amiga? I just read from here that cheap copys of SEGA pads may blast chip from Amy. I don't even know is this pad officially licenced SEGA pad.

It is a knock-off but I don't see how a passive controller could damage your joy ports unless it shorts out the 5v pin. If you're unsure then check it with a continuity meter.

why would you need anything more than 2 buttons?

i recently purchased a few SMS controllers

I have now played Amiga games with ordinary SEGA MD2 control pads and I'm quite pleaced to them. Now I found this:

http://www.syntaxerror.nu/joy008.jpg

I wonder does this auto-fire option work with Amiga? I have found that only the button 'B' is working with Amiga so maybe this pad's button' B' will work with auto-fire? What about a copy of this controller that look almost the same but wasn't made by SEGA? Expreriences...?

Would there be any way to write software to use all 6 buttons on the Amiga or does the hardware not allow it? A true 6-button fighting game would be sweet...

Old Fool
22 August 2007, 14:13
It could be easier just modify those wireings inside the pad. Maybe switching some connections would make more than one button to work. Well I don't know how to do it and is it even a good idea if you manage to damage hardware so I wait some experts thoughts..

hello there forum chummies :D

to help eleviate some queries and ponderies

the Sega Joypad is a far more inteligent beastie than a basic joystick, and its this inteligence that is lost somewhat when put on an amiga. Hence why only (other than the dpad) 2 buttons will work i am afraid.

the Sega Joypad has a small chip "74HC157" and the port and joypad are configured in such a way to allow a mulitple array of out put.

heres some pin-info..

These are the only two direct connections

Line 1
Up output

Line 2
*Down output

Line 3
- Pin 4 of the chip output 1Y

Line 4
- Pin 7 of the chip output 2Y

Line 5
- This line carries in +5V. It is connected to the +5V bus line.

Line 6
- Pin 9 of the chip output 3Y

line 7
- Pin 1 of the chip this carries in a select signal

from the Genesis. This is a signal which varies

rapidly and controls which input goes through the

output.

Line 8
- Ground This is connected to the Ground bus line.

Line 9
- Pin 12 of the chip output 4Y

as you can see, its a lot more complicated than a 2 button joystick, you would need to write a driver for the amiga to be able use some of the otherbuttons / functions of the joypad, arguably you may have to use the serial or paralell port but if its possible to write internal routines for WHDLoad to perhaps load a controller configuration (wich maybe able to use said ports)

hmmmm

here is the connections from the "" chip to the internal buttons / dpad

(internal "74HC157" connection of the sega 3 button pad)

Pin 1 - Line 7 (select)
Pin 2 - Ground (1A) possible expansion / extra button
Pin 3 - Left (1B)
Pin 4 - Line 3 (1Y)
Pin 5 - Ground (2A) possibly expansion / extra button
Pin 6 - Right (2B)
Pin 7 - Line 4 (2Y)
Pin 8 - Ground (GND)
Pin 9 - Line 6 (3Y)
Pin 10 - Button B (3B)
Pin 11 - Button A (3A)
Pin 12 - Line 9 (4Y)
Pin 13 - Button C (4B)
Pin 14 - Start (4A)
Pin 15 - Ground (G) This must be connected to ground
Pin 16 - +5V (Vcc) Power source for the chip

well long story short, yeah you could use all the buttons of the sega joypad, but a driver would be required to take full use of it.

Or you could also buy yourself one of these:

A Commodore CD32 control pad (uncomfortable design, bad D-pad)
Competition Pro CD32 control pad (Mega Drive shape with CD32/SNES style buttons and turbo/auto fire switches)
Boomerang CD32 control pad (Similar to Mega Drive shape with three large buttons and four small ones)

All these pads work with six-button Amiga games (Super Street Fighter II AGA and Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Fightin' Spirit, Ultimate Body Blows if you like fighting games all support the extra buttons).

Alternatively, you can build yourself, or buy if they're ever available again, a Playstation to CD32 controller adapter. These map the Playstation's buttons to the CD32 buttons, as well as allowing the use of the analogue stick as a mouse, so you could have two pads permanently plugged in and use the analogue stick for the mouse.

This also means you can buy any Playstation arcade style joystick and play those Amiga fighting games with all the buttons and a real stick!

Alternatively, stick to 2-button Sega style pads, as most Amiga games only use one or two buttons, and these things can be found at the dump for a buck.

Try eBay and AmigaKit or any other Amiga retailer for those CD32 compatible pads.

OK, I must see what to do. For now on I have just bought those used pads from flea markets. Maybe I must also enter into the wonderfull world of Internet market!

Yeah, thanks for your answers dudes :)

I got the Mega Fire pad some weeks ago. Yes, the auto-fire function works fine and the C Button too. ;)

Old Fool
24 August 2007, 11:53
Is there a change that the 'C' button would be working like a 'space bar'? I once read this would be possible but its sounds unbeliavable. It would be too great if in games like Desert Strike would be possible to change weapon just pressing one of your pad's buttons instead of looking for that biggest key from your keyboard...

Retro-Nerd
24 August 2007, 15:43
You can change the weapons with the C-button in Desert Strike & Jungle Strike. Also it works fine in Turrican 1 & 2 for energy lines, in Lionheart, Aladdin, Turrican 3.... for jumping. ;)
