ClassicWb error...
i have followed the instructions to the letter, however when i reboot with the Setup adf in df0:... it displays an "TZ enviroment variable can not enable UTC times", this error message quickly goes, and i'm asked for Wb3.0 disk, it does something.. and says all files copied, please reboot..
i reboot, and all i get is a 1> prompt
WinUAE config is...
Full ECS
Windowed 640x512 display
68020 proc, fastest possible
kick3.0
8mb Chip
HD = Volume:DH0 - Local_Disk.hdf @100Mb
any ideas???

ok, as your just getting a '1>' prompt it means it hasn't found the s:startup-sequence so it just dumps you into dos...
try typing 'info' to check what drives are mounted.
if you type 'dir' and something resembling a workbench disk is listed (c, fonts, libs, l, s drawers etc) just type loadwb to get to a very limited workbench...
if you can get to workbench at all, check in hdtoolbox to see that you actually have your partition set as 'bootable' and that it has a higher priority than the floppy drive (4 is good).

Never heard of this error before. Paul and others have successfully installed my Workbench setup, perhaps it's something to do with the newest WinUAE????? :confused
With being away from the Amiga scene for two months I'll have to try installing it myself and see if I can recreate the problem before I can advise any further.
Those WB packs are definitely ok however - as I've already mentioned others have installed them. ;)
Daz, get some pizza rustled up for me. It's great problem solving tucker. :)

Just realised that this message is harmless:
"TZ enviroment variable can not enable UTC times"
it just means that when I zipped up the archive the time option was not enabled.
Djay, what pack did you download?
The advanced, Full or Lite?

Pizza's On Its Way!
I've installed the classicWb's before no probs for me i'm happy to say :D
Djay
21 January 2003, 22:17
i used Advanced.... but i think i had the same prob with Full version...
after it has extracted the system.zip (which takes only a few seconds?!??!), i quit winuae, then check the contents of the HDF (using viewadf shell) and i only get :-
Trashcan
c
s
System.zip
Trashcan.info
files
i'm still confused... ARGHHH i want this to work.. i'm normally quite good at solving these types of issues

Hmm. Just tried installing my ClassicWB ADV as I've described in the instructions and had zero problems. :confused
I used the latest WinUAE and your setup djay. Below is a pic of the files unpacking. :confused
Djay
23 January 2003, 22:47
AHHH HAAA!!!
it doesn't unpack.... on my system then... it does not do anything like your screen grab!!!
it displays...
TZ enviroment variable can not enable UTC times
Archive : DH0: System.Zip
then after about 3 secs it display some text for only a millisecond...
the screen clears... and then displays it needs Wb3.0 which is successfull
if i soft reset it then displays the 1> prompt, as before if i go into the HDF, only then above files are displayed (previous post)
Bloodwych
23 January 2003, 23:02
Looks like unzip is failing to unpack the archive. :(
When you say 8MB chip in your setup, you do mean 2mb chip and 6mb fast?
unzip needs fastRAM to work. I suggest 2MB chip and 8MB fast, giving 10MB in all.
You can use Z3-fast instead of normal fast if you wish to have more than 10 MB RAM.
Djay
23 January 2003, 23:06
i managed to pause winuae in the millisecond that the error message was displayed.... i got most of it....
Daz
23 January 2003, 23:09
silly question but have you tried re-downloading the zip?
Djay
23 January 2003, 23:10
unzip needs fastRAM to work. I suggest 2MB chip and 8MB fast, giving 10MB in all.
oh sorry i didn't know.. lemme try again... :)
Djay
23 January 2003, 23:13
tried fast ram.. still no joy!!!!
the zip file seems fine if it open with winzip (apart from the windows error)
Bloodwych
23 January 2003, 23:14
It looks like the zip is corrupt, but since it was extracted from the ClassicWB ADV package without a CRC error occurring that would seem unlikely. hmmmm :confused
BTW, keep the 2mb chipram and fastram setup. It offers the best compatibility.

just send him your version Bloodwych ;)
Djay
23 January 2003, 23:18
tried Z3 fast ram @ 32mb, still no joy, can you check my config... ignore the description (its wrong)....
i copied the System.Zip, exactly as your instructions say to do it BTW
Bloodwych

Which WinUAE are you using?
Djay

the latest... 08.22.R4
sorry to be a right pain in the arse!!!:)

Here is a working config for me. You'll need to change the ROM directory and HDF locations:
Djay
23 January 2003, 23:35
still not working.. can't be a config issue... i'll try and d/l again!!!

Here it is working with your setup djay.
BTW, enable some JIT cache in your setup, at least 4mb, or wb will run SLOW.

Daz, can't beat the real thing as Akira would say. ;)
Djay, if you still have probs try this:
1) Unpack system.zip using Winzip into a named PC directory of your choice. Ignore the errors due to the PC's incompatible file system.
2) Place system.zip into that directory.
3) Open Winuae and select the above PC directory in the harddrives tab. Name the volume "DH0".
4) Run the install disk and follow the instructions, ignoring the failure to unpack system.zip (as you've already done it in 1).
5) Reset and see if the damn thing works. It should.
Not ideal, but it probably will still work fine. Copy the contents of the PC directory to a HDF from within winuae once you boot up the classicwb.
Botch job, but I'm out of ideas. :(
Djay

i'll try..
Botch job, but I'm out of ideas
we ain't just dealing with workbench, we do have windows in this formula, so of course its a botch job:D
Djay
24 January 2003, 03:37
right... i extracted the files from the zip to the pc hd... then in wb copied the files using dopus, into the hdf...
i still get the 1> prompt, if i load wb from floppy i get this screen...

Djay, this does work just fine. I've altered the method slightly. There is no need for stage 2 outlined in my previous post. :)
Please follow carefully:
1) Unpack system.zip using Winzip into a named PC directory of your choice. Ignore the errors due to the PC's incompatible file system.
2) Open Winuae and add that PC DIRECTORY (the one you unpacked system.zip into in stage 1) under the harddrives tab. NAME THE VOLUME "DH0". Don't have any other harddrive mounted at this stage, including any HDFs.
4) Run the install disk and follow the instructions, ignoring the failure to unpack system.zip (as you've already done it in 1). Make sure you insert the Workbench3.0 disk when asked to do so.
5) Remove the install disk. Reset and see if the damn thing works. It should.
Try this first and get back. ;)
You should see this:

Ignore the errors due to the PC's incompatible file system.
Or why not use winrar, much better than winzip and I get no errors.;)

Yeah, any archiver will do and WinRAR is one of the best.
I bet you don't get errors Paul cos yer using Windows XP with that NF-whatever-you-call-it file system, and not fat32. ;)
Paul
24 January 2003, 18:28
Well I unziped it on my FAT32 C: drive but maybe it is still xp that made it work.
My D: drive with XP is NTFS formatted.

Still can't decide if I should go over to XP.
Is it worth it Paul? :confused :)
Seems slower than Win ME which works an absolute treat for me - no crashes or problems whatsoever, although I did spend a lot of time perfecting its setup and removing bloatware. ;)

Err well it runs Winuae better, and crashes less on my system, but...
Unless you have a 1ghz or better with 512mb of ram and broadband due to the insane number of patches you need to download, I would not bother.
When you buy a new PC you will get XP anyway.
My HD is partitioned with Win 98SE on one and XP on the other.
Djay
24 January 2003, 22:56
i'm actually shocked how well XP works... i was very doubtfull, but i bought a 2.0ghz machine... and Win98 would have been shite on it...
.. so far XP hasn't crashed once, no blue screens... but it does treat you like a complete idiot, for example...
say XP needs to close a program, because it is not responding, it throws up the error message and says Sorry but XP has to close this program.. very funny:D
Djay
24 January 2003, 23:11
right... ermm...
followed your guide... and it seemed ok, but now when i start all i get is a black screen !?!?!?!
...
i added see PC hds, now i get the 1> prompt again!!!
if i boot from a wb disk i see the hds (with the PC hds ativated)
i've noticed that i haven't got a startup-sequence, is that right?
Bloodwych
25 January 2003, 12:21
Djay, I give up! :)
I've tested both methods and the ClassicWB works 100% fine for others and me.
If you've followed the last set of instructions, I just can't understand why it doesn't work. The files needed for the startup sequence are copied off the workbench3.0 disk during the install procedure. :confused :scream
It sounds like you didn't insert the workbench3.0 disk when asked too and the required files weren't copied over.
Perhaps I'll do a pictorial guide hehe.............. :)

26 January 2003, 23:48
IT BLOODY WORKS!!!!!!
it seems that my Wb3.0 boot disk was knackered... as i used a different Wb3.0 disk.. SORRY for wasting your time, but my original Wb3.0 seemed ok as it booted and ClassicWB reported it to be 100% ok...
thanks for everybodys help!!!
