Hi folks... I've gotten WinUAE working loverly with A500 emulation (wish the nastiness on the right of the screen wasn't there in full screen, and OpenGL text was a bit sharper when using that, but it's all free, so hush my mouth!:) ) and now I'm fiddling with A1200. I never had one of these, so I'm not sure which chipset etc I should go with for best performance in something like Gloom... I am using a PIV 1.3 with 256 ram, so will emulation speed of the A1200 match the original? What do you guys recommend for the WinUAE settings? Thanks for any advice you can offer!

Moved to a proper forum ;)

here is my A1200 config for WinUAE 08.22.R3

remember to change the rom location... you need kickstart 3.0.rom

I've been fiddling with the 3.1 rom; will it make any real difference? He he... another post in the wrong forum!

3.0 is for the original A1200, 3.1 is a butchered Escom version of the A1200 (ARGHHHH!) - so i think (?)

both will work however just change your rom location to point to your 3.1 version

AGA is a bitch to emulate, so don't expect great performance, its a bit or miss at the moment

Just been looking at your config; you've not set any more Ram than a standard A1200 (i know that much! :) ); what I was really wondering was what sort of cpu/ram allocation people use for a beefed up A1200, to get better performance in Gloom, AB3D2 and things like it...

To give you an idea of what I was experimenting with, I have one config set as;

68020+FPU
2mb Chip
1Mb Slow
8Mb Fast
512k Z3 Fast
32 MB RTG

Is there any point in me fiddling with those settings (esp CPU and all but chip ram) is what I was wondering...? With the A500 of course, all most people did was stick the extra 1/2 meg in...

As for 3.1, my download is labelled "Kikstart 3.1 (40.069)(A1200)(Commodore)(1993)". Got it (if linking to such a site isn't frowned upon) at www.planetemu.net.

First of all, stop using Kick 40.069, it´s a hack whatever, Kick 40.068 is the officially released Kick 3.1 for A1200 ;) Then, leave alone the slow ram, no A1200 I know of ever used slow ram and NEVER use slow ram together with fast ram :D

Next thing, use either Z3 fast OR fast, not both and 32MB RTG doesn´t help anything here, RTG is the Grafics Card and even the best A1200 with gfx card does not have a 32MB one inside :cheese

Ok, this is what I was after... which bits were standard add ons!

Righty, switching to the 40.068 Kick...

My virtual A1200 just did! ;) But it doesnt now.

Next thing, use either Z3 fast OR fast, not both

They are exclusive of each other? I'll plump for Fast then, as I can shove that up higher... bua ha ha. But I recall very vaguely there were 4mb A1200's; should I go for more chip or more fast ram for performance?

and 32MB RTG doesn´t help anything here, RTG is the Grafics Card and even the best A1200 with gfx card does not have a 32MB one inside :cheese [/B]

Will it make any difference to emulation to leave any RAM in the RTG though? Will it affect compatability with any software? You know, that's one great advantage WinUAE has compared to a real Amiga/PC... it's not costing me anything to upgrade (or downgrade)!

You need RTG memory If you want to use picasso modes. They're faster than aga. Just leave around 8meg RTG memory.

Only if you use gfx card software/games :) It doesn´t affect emulation of older games ;)
