Best way to set up 12GB HDD for A1200?

Hi. I was wondering if someone could advise the best recommended way to partition/setup a 12 GB Hard Drive for use in an Amiga 1200

I understand that the boot partition should be small and at the "beginning of the drive". I also understand that there are various 4GB/8GB limits, but to be honest - I don't fully understand what needs to be done..

I will mainly be using the drive to install games I played during my childhood, so its likely that I'll only use a small part of the total capacity. However - I am keen to try and set it up as correctly as possible.

- what size and how many partitions should I use?
- what filesystem I should use?
- vanilla workbench versus ClassicWB?
- software to install to overcome current tectnical limitations in the A1200.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I would suggest SFS and Classic Workbench, partition sizes:

SYS(DH0) = 500mb
Work(DH1) = 3gb (ish)
Games(DH2) = The rest (7-8gb)

You can also setup DH2 as the 'Games' assign, following the tutorial and then copy the KG packs onto that partition:

Classic Workbench makes life so much easier as it has everything you need to get the most out of your Amiga with the least hassle.

Which pack you choose depands on the specs of you machine, if you have only a 2mb A1200 you will need at least a Trapdoor Ram expansion to get the most out of it.

If you don't mind losing 4G of HD space (total usable space will be slightly under 8G), safe solution is to use PFS3 direct scsi. Works out of the box, no need for scsi.device patches, all partitions (including those that cross 4G border) are accessible even when booting from floppy. (But I'd personally use 8G CF card in this situation)
