View Full Version : .WAV to RAW convertor?

Hi,
I have some .WAV audio files I need to convert to RAW format so I can use them in my demo. I have tried "wav2raw" from Aminet, but that doesn't work - or atleast not with the .WAV's I have :(
Does anyone know of some software I can use to do the converting? Ideally I don't wish to end up with another sideproject (I just finished ripping the Conrad Hart sprites from Flashback as I needed the animations frames to use as a base for my own creation...) and write the conversion software myself.
To the mods, I hope this is the correct forum - it was either this one or the "Request.other" that I was toying with using and decided on this one.

Fast Tracker II have support for RAW files http://www.sonicspot.com/fasttracker/fasttracker.html so maybe you can also save in this format. It will work with DOS Box.

A cool piece of kit (just wasted 30 minutes playing Nibbles), but with one crucial option missing - you can't load existing samples, not to mention it seems to freeze randomly :(
Not sure it matters, but I tried Version 2.08.

Freeze? Do you configured sound with 'Config' button? What you see when you try to load .wav file?
Can't go wrong with SoX. Check http://sox.sourceforge.net/

I was thrown by the absence of a load button. After configuring the default directories and placing the .wav file in it I was able to load it.
However, I was unable to save it as anything useful to me - only .XT, .XM and .XP formats exclusive to Fast Tracker. I could save as a .MOD but a whole load of errors popped up (too many tracks or something along those lines) before it saved.
I also tried saving under the Samples (.SMP format) and Instrument options, but all they did was add the appropriate extension to the filename and didn't save anything at all :(

I think in Fast Tracker II only 4 tracks can be possible when you save music as MOD file. It's very easy to add and remove tracks.

MOD also has a sample size limit of 64kb. I would deeply recommend SoX for any sound format converting.
Yes, and some sound effects added on pattern will not work when you save as MOD file.
Well speaking of trackers I know Milkytracker is decent at converting to raw and saving mod files. :)

I just found out that it has corrupted the sample I was trying to convert. Now I have to hunt it down on the internet again :crying
Added on 15th June @ 20:30:
It seems it wasn't corrupted after all. VLC player doesn't seem to recognise some .WAV files for some reason.
Edit 2:
Thanks for trying to help guys, but after some googling I ended up finding Switch (by NCH software) - you can find the Windows 2K version here (http://www.nch.com.au/software/win2000/index.html) (it's the version I used, but they do have modern versions for you XP/Vista/Windows 7 freaks!).
NB: To successfully convert .WAV's to .RAW you must set the encoder options to 8 bit signed and an appropriate frequency (e.g. 11025 or 16000). I also had it set to mono as I am using a mono .WAV sample :spin

SoundBox can convert WAV to RAW, it's on Aminet.
Or you could always just strip off the header bytes with a hex editor.
Play16 could also convert WAV to RAW, also on aminet

That would only work with 8-bit signed samples.
The samples I have are 16-bit and windows compatible, which would also mean flipping the byte order from little-endian to big-endian.

Definitely agree with Minuous, SoundBox is a great tool for converting samples, I have been using it for years to convert wavs and stuff to 8svx to use in games and Scala presentations.

For previewing it's fine but you really need to 'nurture' the samples to get them palatable on Amiga (and also Amiga trackers need hi frq support to not make every sample sound muffled but that's another matter). I think MT friends will agree it's hard to get something decent out except bass and bassdrum.
Everything else you say is spot on.
Or as someone said, use any wave editor for PC, export as 8 bit mono 22.05kHz or your instrument frq and strip the header. You can even see the header in the tracker and just 'remove the gunk at the start that sounds bad' ;)
