May be important:

- giant jump/killing spin = keep fire button pressed until the pocket grows to the maximum, now stop (releasing the fire button you may press "down", so that the whirlwind lands right before you), go to the spinning whirlwind, stand "upon it" and press down. necessary to proceed ;)

- I think there is no highscore table, grab the screenshot of "game over" screen, there is enough time

I played this quite a bit a year or so back. I never quite understood the mechanism for getting a gold star, and obviously you need that to finish the last level. How does that work?

humble worm

SUBSEQUENCE:

when you press fire it is shown in the corner what you would get if you captured the monster instead of just killing it. first there is a cheapest sweet - worth 100 points (a ball or a white ring). if you kill the monster the sweet for 200 goes next. then there is a sweet for 300 etc etc. green candy and green jelly man are worth 900, these are last of sweets. there is also a coin for 1000.

You may wait for something better and kill monster or decide to get the sweet you were shown and capture the monster. When you capture the monster and get the object, the queue starts again (from the cheapest/worst sweet)

in the queue there are also:

- small bottle of milk - 1 up,
- big bottle of milk - restores all lives,

- blue cup with purple dots, retort with golden fluid, small coffee cup - cannot remember exactly which gives what, but they all improve your weapon (frequency of shooting, speed of pocket-filling, damage),

- cocktail in grey chalice - when you pick it up and try to shoot a big whirlwind you will throw 4-6 units of sweets/coins (depends on what you picked up just before (or after) you got the cocktail), if you just shoot you will throw just one sweet/coin,

- green cocktail in glass - cannot remember :confused

- brown bottle - rain of sweets (depends on what you picked up just before (or after) you got the bottle)

There are also silver stars (appear after every sweet passes the queue) and golden stars (appear after silver stars and some other stuff). I think that when you pick up a coin something happens and the subsequence changes (golden star comes closer)... not sure.
Anyway, if you see big bottle of milk and kill the baddie which would give it the golden star will be next.

Now I cannot remember exact subsequence of appearing of the stuff, I also may be wrong in some details - experiment and observe.

STARS:

if you pick up golden star and have not picked up any silver star before you will get mask - baddies cannot harm you.

if you pick up 1 silver star and then a golden star - you will get TELEPORTATION HELMET. I always hunt for them, there are more than one teleportation room in the level - it is probably not the best way to get huge score but secret rooms is what I like the most about magic pockets :) . when there are no more secret rooms the helmet will transport you straight to the exit door.

if you pick 2 silver stars and then a golden star - you get raybans - they kill all baddies within some range and turn them into coins.

if you pick 3 silver stars... cannot remember, I always try to get only 1 silver star and then the golden, and again and again. anyway, there are deadly weapons to be collected - helmets, bag of nails, gasoline... I think gasoline is the ultimate one, it costs 5 silver stars and then a golden star.

there is much more to be discovered :)

sorry for my english, I hope it is more or less legible

That's great Humble. But always confused me was that there seemed to be two different queues. One on the left of the screen and one on the right? Does that matter or are they the same queue?

humble worm
06 March 2011, 21:51
It means something for sure, but I have never thought about it. I think I look only to the right one and that they are both parts of the same queue. Now when you mention it... I have to take a look when I will play next time :)

Not that I don't trust anyone here, but would it be a good idea to make sure that the number of credits is also viewable in the screenshot with the score?

BTW, I am participating - just not in a rush to upload my score straight away.

This text changes. I must have made the shot in the wrong moment then and I haven't noticed it. I will try to put other scores with that information on screen.

But on the other hand, we could easily play using credits and treat them as lives. When you use credit you start the whole level from the beginning with the number of points you had when you started it. So either way it's not much of a cheating.

humble worm
12 March 2011, 19:25
I swear to the great architect or whatever you want - 3 credits there ;)
the thing is you have no choice but to trust. As you may have noticed there is an item (or items) to be found which make you throw a coin every ten shots. If somebody wants to cheat there is nothing easier than just stand and shoot....

I wasn't suggesting you were cheating. I'm sure theres a few people here that know the game inside and out. It's just that we're not supposed to use any continues and/or credits. I never bothered to check whether the score was reset when continuing or not.

I was unaware it was an item that did that. I had noticed that every so often he would drop an item, getting better each time. I assumed it was once every 100 throws.
Personally I don't have the time to cheat, what with working on my demo and other things. Plus its usually john4p, capehorn and a few others that regularly get high scores (sometimes untouchable high scores - atleast for me), so if I shot up to the top it would be kinda obvious, lol.

Heres my score thus far: 183,100

I made it to the end of the third level - I was going up that thin whatsit with bubblegum, when 2 of those flying creatures forced my downwards and killed me before I could get onto the bike :(

Another question, where (and why) does a bubble come along every so often, trap him in it and cause him to lose a couple of lives when it bursts?

I think it turns up if you waste too much time standing near the exit. You can destroy it if you hit it enough times with the 'Pocket Power' and get some points.

Ahh, right.

Unfortunately on the two occasions I have been bubblised (yup, just made that word up!) it came from directly below him :(

548,400 and going strong, until I jumped into this area to get a gold star and couldn't get out. I didn't think the Bitmaps would pull a trick like that.

Did you know that you can pull down when standing on the clouds to spin-jump?

humble worm
13 March 2011, 08:00
The bubble turns up when you get near the exit door. When you hear the door opens be prepared - it will come from the opposite direction than the door. Got to have upgraded weapon to destroy it. If you have gasoline one shot is enough.

The bubble does not kill, it just deprives you of weapon upgrades.

Did you know that you can pull down when standing on the clouds to spin-jump?

Not sure but probably it is also necessary to press "up" while throwing the big cloud so that it lands a bit higher.

I did wonder about that too (Mailman's first screenshot showed 2 credits, but it doesn't matter because he has posted a higher legitmate score anyway).

LOL! I just have never noticed it! ;)

The first score was so lame that probably I just tapped fire button and started the game from the beginning. I didn't realise I was playing using the second credit...

But it just proves my point that in this game credits are like lives with the difference that a starting point is at the beginning of the level with number of points you had in that moment. So, if you use credit you gain absolutly nothing... in particullar when you use it in the first level...

Nevertheless my scores, apart from the first one of which I wasn't aware, are on one credit. I am still getting the experience in this game so new scores should be fully legit without any doubts.

I like monsters behaviour in MP. some patrol area, some chase you and others just seem to hurry to somewhere and dont give a damn about you. their graphic design is great too. carnivorous plants and crabs are my favourite. Very pretty sprites and I love it when they consume sweets with the 'gulp' sound :laughing :rolleyes :nuts ;)

83,700 on my first go... i didnt really play much of MP first time around, i didnt think it lived up to the hype...

i am taking it slow and its rather good

I seem to remember it first being used for a saturday morning kids tv show. Kids would phone in and control character with phone buttons.

That made me want it all the more when it came out.
However, never really played it much past the 3rd level.
