View Full Version : Final Assault

hi,
downloaded Final Assault, ((C) 1988 by Infogrames) from DZ and it didn't work at first, but after all I was able to fix it so that it would work at least with a very special configuration for WinUAE 0.8.8 R8, combined with a Kickstart 1.2 ROM. Additional note: It will only work if you press the RIGHT mouse button (full mem) at start.
But I doubt it will work on the real thing, because it -- read this! -- spits out a 'Software failure - task held' if I copy the files to a fresh disk, remove the "old" disk and start it again with the new disk. Well, I assert I was just kind of "lucky" because apparently it worked just because the emulation isn't perfect yet :p
Could anyone please test it on his OLD Amigas? (Don't forget your good old A1000s, too :))
Well I'd also appreciate a version that will just work from the start - if someone has a version he has downloaded somewhere else, please drop me a note here. Thanks!
Ok, I'll let you know tomorrow, I will try it in my 2.05 A600HD.

Ooooh ... 2.05?
This looks like a Kick 1.x-only game.
But we'll see... :)
Then I'll softkick into 1.3 or something :) We'll see

Andreas, you mentioned some info on the game, but you didn't state who cracked it, if it is indeed a crack. See, I think my version was from an original and was deprotected using one of those parameter copiers. Also, mine is from Epyx and you said yours was Infogrames, so we may have Euro and US versions here. I will have a look at both copies later this evening and see what I can come up with (although I will be doing so in emulation...)
I still have my original boxed version, btw.

Twistin',
you've pushed me. Pushed me to be more accurate, that is. :)
Exactly, the version I uploaded states 'Epyx/Infogrames' on the title screen. :)
So I don't expect differences between the US and the European release, actually.
Another note: this version IS indeed cracked. There's a file called THE_HELLION in the first line of the startup-sequence. That seems to be the handle of the guy who cracked it.

I have both the french version and the US version.. I can get both to work.. takes some special settings but nothing like pressing the right mouse button and stuff like that.. I've been able to get both version working on my A2000 as well..

OK, I got both versions to work (the version posted, as well as the deprotected original version). Aside from the bootblock, they appear identical. And yes, Epyx published the game and Infogrames developed it.
Damn, been a long time since I dug this one up. I used the config included in the zip, so that kept me from having to muck around with settings too. Thanks.
I wouldn't mind having the French version, or any other crack of the game that anyone has. Being the completist that I am...

Twistin',
thanks for testing. But one question still remains: did you happen to check on MY uploaded version on the real thing as well? That's the thing that actually interests me ... if THIS works.
Mangar or Twistin', could anyone of you upload the US version so I can test it with a "less weird" configuration?
Thanks.

Sorry, Andreas...I was only able to check it in WinUAE at this time. I can see no reason why a real Amiga would choke on it, though. Unless it just demands a 1.2 ROM, which is possible, but not likely. I remember playing my copy (the one attached) on both a 1.3 ECS A500+, as well as an Amiga 2000 (I forgot the config of the A2000 at the time.)
Here is that version, which is from a US original, but you may have to use your config file to get it to boot.
It DOES choke on it. I scrapped that shitty THE_HELLION file, which crashed the Amiga, and tried to run the other startup-sequence file. It crashed (wait for disk activity to finish, the usual stuff). I softkicked onto 1.3 and it gave me a TASK HELD error again. So I'd say it's porked, since you oculd run it in your 1.3 A500. Unless my ECS chip is bothering the game.

Twistin',
BIG THANKS! :bounce
I can only encourage Akira once again to test *this* version on the real thing because your version now works with a standard A500 Kick1.3 configuration and, because it uses a M68k-prefetch, the 'slow but more compatible' box must be checked.
Without SBMC, it would stop at track #59, this is because it displays a 'Task Held' window, but it's invisible due to the color settings of devs:system-configuration.
'Nuff said -- it works!
Thanks so much! :)
I tried just your 'fixed' (ahem :D) version, not TWistin's version. I'll give it a try.
I don't even know what the game is about, but who cares :D

I also didn't play it for long, but it resembles Chamonix Challenge a lot.
