IRQs

My ftp runs off Windows 2000 and Ive just discovered the 'Computer Management' reporting tools...

Now it says that I have 4 devices that all use IRQ 11!! A possible source for my many crashes methinks....

Thing is how do I force the pc to use different IRQs? It wont let me when I go into My Computer / Device Manager cause the 'change settings' box is always greyed out.

No, this is perfectly normal. PCI devices can share IRQs without any problems.

If you really want to change PCI device's IRQs you usually must move device(s) to another PCI slot(s)..

and you usually have to force the PCI slot IRQ's via the BIOS setup as well ;)

Like Toni said, most devices will share fine, but from experience this is not always the case. Sometimes the SB Live/Audigy series of sound cards can have a caniption when it shares with other devices, so you may have to play around with which slot it seems to work best in :)

There can be a few problems with sharing IRQs of certain devices though. Having video, sound or network sharing the same IRQ can cause problems, but if you don't experience problems with it, it's best to leave it alone until you do. Win2000 is generally pretty good about IRQ management, so you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Im going to have a play around with my bios settings as the video / sound / network card / modem card all share this resource..

My pc has become a lot more stable recently though :)

Well then, if it's stable now, then it's best to leave it alone. If however you run into some problems, the best thing to do is to just move around the sound card, ie, don't place it in the slot next to the AGP video slot as these are hardware assigned to share the same IRQ no matter what. You can manually change the PCI slot IRQ and the AGP slot then follows and is assigned the same freakin IRQ. There is no manual adjustment for the AGP slot :(
