View Full Version : Emulate floppy drive sounds?

I love the sounds that the floppy drive makes when loading. Loading screens just don't feel right without them (and I still get my fair share of them despite using a modern-ish laptop hard drive). Is there any way to play back floppy noises, or hell, physically control the floppy drive as if it were reading the disk, when loading? I know that the latter is possible in UAE, but would it be feasible to implement such a feature into whdload?

Have you ever heard "Floppy Sound" from any hd installed games? Really strange request. :D :laughing

I have one for you Muzer (actually two ;)) :
1. Use a real Amiga (with floppies of course) :great :p
2. Use ADFs and the WinUAE floppy sound emulation :agree :D
Damn, that request is almost as good as the one with WHDLoad on floppies :lol ;)

I don't. Those sounds always make me wonder how soon it will be before the drive fails! :p

btw: hd-loading times are much faster. You couldn't match the "charming" floppy sound from the original disks. :)

Speed the floppy sound up to match the HDD speeds :lol

Use a real Amiga (with floppies of course) http://eab.abime.net/images/smilies/great.gif
Not as convenient (I don't really care about loading times, I'm a patient guy, but what is annoying is not being able to start games from workbench).
2. Use ADFs and the WinUAE floppy sound emulation http://eab.abime.net/images/smilies/agree.gif
I don't use Windows.

Some options for you then:

1) Get another Amiga and turn it on (with a disk in the drive) next to you use whdload.
2) Record the sound of a disk loading, then play it whenever you use whdload.
3) Make the noises with your mouth.
4) Get a friend or colleague to mimic the noise.
5) Pay a friend to put the disks in for you, before you want to play the game, this way it does not inconvenience you.
6) Build a 1000 multi-disk, voice activated disk changer.

Not sure if Wepl will implement this ;) I'm sure a WHDLoad coder will tell you if it's possible at all.

I presume you'd have to add a music player into the whdload exe, then preload the sounds of the disk drive for every game (or risk black screens for OS swaps) which'll increase the memory requirements, which just makes the whole idea pretty crappy.

Yes, now that you mention it ;)

Record the sound on a CD, put it in a hifi, press play at exactly the right time and enjoy, press stop when the game has loaded, repeat this every time you require the floppy sound :D

Sorted. I think I'll give myself a pat on the back :D

Heh. Maybe it is a stupid idea (but if it is, why'd they implement it in WinUAE?)

Because WinUAE emulates a floppy drive.

WHDLoad doesn't :)

Because WinUAE emulates a floppy drive.

Yep, WinUAE 'knows' when to play which sound. I really wonder if that info could still be retrieved in a WHDLoad slave (just curious, not necessarily supporting the request ;)).

Well, I suppose in theory, it would be possible.

BUT

As it would have to SLOW loading times to the same as floppy loading times in order to play correctly then one really must ask.

"What is the point?" Why not just use floppies?

If one wanted the "feel of floppies", on one's A1200, then I think one will find a conviniently located and appropriate device on the right hand side of one's Amiga keyboard!

It is needed in UAE because your PC does not have a suitable device, unless you own a catweasel. Your Amiga has a floppy as standard. If you want to hear a drive clicking then why not use it?

muzer: I do not mean it to be harsh... Quite the contrary... but really, what do you reasonably expect knowledgeable Amiga users to say on this topic.

Well, the main reason I asked was interest really, I just wanted to know whether it would be possible. Judging by the responses, I guess that even if it was, nobody would ever want to do it ;)

Well, I love WHDload (when it's working, which finally happened on my A1200-030! :)) AND I love floppy disks on my A500.

I don't mind longish loading times, I just stay away from 4-disk games that are usually not very enjoyable anyway... usually non-action games with loadsaprettygraphics...

The solution, then, is to get an Amiga model to match the games you like, and transfer games to floppy.

Yeah, correct. That's the most sensible thing you've said all thread. You can stop feeling retarded now and congratulate yourself that you have learned something.

We (I know/I Speak For Myself only)-don't mean to sound mean, but it's kinda hard not to sometimes.

Well I guess that is a conclusion.
Now let us never speak of this again!

Lol, what a idea - to slow down everything, make WHD req. higher and waste time just to hear stupid floppy sounds.:nuts
