Hello all,
Quick question:

Can you put a standard 3gb hard disc in an amiga 1200?

and how easy is it to do?

Thanks

Sure you can and it´s easy :) Just get an adapter cable 44pin IDE ---> 40 Pin IDE and an Y-Adapter to get power from the Floppy Drive Unit ..... hook it on and you´re ready to go :D

Unless it's a slim hard drive like the awesome Seagate ST51270A 3.5 (the best designed hard drive series I've ever seen!) you'll need to cut away some of the metal shielding in order to get it to fit.

Power requirements can also be an issue with the crap 25W white brick that comes with the A1200 - it doesn't have the current for certain hard drives. I've used a 3.5" hard drive with 15W max power usage however on the standard PSU and it was fine. Best to check the hard drive power specs and compare them to the numbers on the bottom of the PSU just to be safe. Remember Power(W)=Voltage(Volts)*Current(Amps).

You may also have a problem tracking down the correct cables - like Retro said you'll need a 44-40 pin IDE and a special power connector.

If the above fails, laptop 2.5" drives are much easier to fit and require no modification of the metal shielding or special power requirements/cables. They can be found at reasonable prices on auction sites.

i wouldnt recommend using the floppy drive power socket, it drawms a lot of current thru them small tracks.

i recommend using a hard drive plug from a normal pc, soldering the other ends to the relevent voltages on the PSU connector. it has all you need right there, 12v, 5v and ground

I've just found a slim seagate HD thay fits perfectly and built a y-cable myself but I'm not sure if I connected the ends properly or not. Will I blow my HD if the connectors are placed improperly? Are there any schematics for this?
