Since I am pretty new to the scene etc

What exactly is a swapper? and a contact?

Used in demos etc. "Please mail me if you would like to become a contact" etc

And what do they mean by "call our boards"?? I know it is bulleten board system bbs but how were you supposed to call them etc?

Tnx for your help..

swapper = warez trader
contact = more general than warez trader (coder, artist, fan etc...)

back in the day, you had to connect directly to bulletin boards and could trade warez etc.... you need to dial directly to the board, rather than connect as you do today via the world wide web.

i've still got my C64 modem somewhere!

Swapper: someone with whom you trade software with.

Contact: a person with whom you make contact for swapping, joining a group, etc. Also, a person who was able to obtain software not yet released (ie, an insider from software companies, magazines, etc.) for the purpose of releasing to the scene by said group. Or someone who might be able to become a part of a given group (coder, cracker, musician, gfx artist, etc.)

Call our boards: each crack group typically had at least one bulletin board, and most of the better groups had several of them. Their invite to call the boards (which, for the most part, no longer exist) is so that you can upload (or download) more pirated software or become a courier (spread software from one board to the next), or if you are a contact.

You aren't supposed to call them. Back in the day when those messages were created, they were calling out to others within their elite circle. But today, these messages are just nostalgic remnants of the past (at least on Amiga games, demos, readme files).

Edit: Deej beat me to it! :)

Oh those were the days :rolleyes

I remember me and a friend did call an US BBS over Thaiwan, Japan, Australia to the US, man, we really had fun :p There was a contact over the sea where we ordered a US Robotics 19200 Baud Modem ! This was way the fastest modem that days and over here in germany 2400 Baud was the standart modem :laughing

As a side note, this is where the term Elite came from ;)

And that lovely '0' day warez ;)
