Rules

Post screenshots of your scores in this thread, and write your score underneath. You can enter as many times as you like within the round's time frame.

No cheating of any kind (including score leeching) - this includes save states. If you suspect a contestant of cheating then don't post it in public (anyone who does so will have their posts edited or deleted) - please PM me and I will investigate it. If we find anyone guilty of cheating then they will be banned for the entire season.

Play at default settings (3 lives, normal difficulty) (yeah I really checked it after the copy and paste action :D)

Remember, anyone can join in at any time. Have fun and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

I tried a couple of times, and I think I'm getting closer to the first boss, but I only made it to the mini-boss on the first level, the guy in a tank. He blasted me..

What is your emulator of preference? Zsnes o snes9x?

I used zsnes for years and downloaded now snes9x which is much improved from last time i used it (circa 2000). But i can't use my joypad in it?

I use Snes9x here and of course you can use your joypad. Choose 'Input -> Joypad configuration' from the menu, click on the first box (Up) and then press the direction pad, analog stick or button on your joypad :)

OK it was because my batteries died again (too much use) :D and need a 12 hours recharge. :guru

This Logitech wireless is great, but the batteries are a nuisance. I'm thinking of selling it and grab a USB one for sure.

Hard.. really?? i find it is quite predicatable! (not that im particularly good)

I completed this several times in 2 player co-op when i was a kid! and i was never that hardcore at games!!

I use Zsnes. I have always felt that it's been superior to Snes9x in just about every way. :) Pharos is one utterly cool guy.

In fact, I think it's the single best emulator ever made! Yeah, that's a mouthful, since there's the WINUAE and the MAME which has to do so much more, but really, it's just the full package that is so very well-done. Controls, compatibility, filters, interface, it's all just so, so smooth.

Thanks guys for your answers. Well i think i'm gonna stick with zsnes (also my favorite), following such rave reviews. :) I just wished it had a more windows-like interface, that's the reason i peeked an eye on snes9x.

Well tonight i'm gonna give Contra a go and rest Arcade Pool for a day or two as after making 200 000+ last Saturday i managed to put the picture in some strange dimension, so is much like 0 points to me.

I did TCD. Manually first where i believed it was and various other possibilities, then with the search tool. I've got all the suspect files of saturday but that to no avail. I suspect that was Picasa that somehow sent it to the limbo, as i was organizing some albums yesterday after our game.

Just a tip for everyone who isn't familiar with the controls : When you hold down the shoulder buttons (L or R) you stand still while shooting. This might make the game a bit easier :agree

I think without using continues I've never gotten further than the stage with the gliders. And even with continues I've never beaten Super Probotector* back in the day. So I guess that's your round. :great

*btw., this is the only game where I find the censored version more stylish - the Probotectors >> the Contra mercs imo

I like both versions :) Of course I played the censored one back in the nineties and when I played the 'original' version on an emulator years later I didn't thought it is 'better' or 'worse'. I mean if you look at your hero's sprite in this game you're dead anyway :D

I think it were the drawings between levels - those drawn battle robots looked imo better and certainly it was more believable that machines could take down hundreds of enemies compared to some guys without any armor...

Still the gameplay is identical and - as always - Contra III probably plays 18% faster than Super Probotector because of the lazy PAL-adjustments in the nineties.

That is why everybody should play 'Contra III' and not 'Super Probotector'. You never know which changes they made...
Yes the between level screens look better with robots, but in both cases killing the hordes of aliens doesn't really makes sense :D (not that I would mind though ;))

I played it some days ago to see how it looked, and damn! this game is hard!

And TCD I didn't forget about this compo,mate, it's just that now that i'm on the roll with Arcade Pool i'm trying to improve that score. And then there is Fallout 3, and SS2 and.. so many fine games to play that i really like...
Sometimes the kids just hang on my trousers crying because i forgot to give them the meals :crazy Bwahahah :cheese i'm driving nuts.

Now, back to work. :nervous

These skills may help a little, but not much. Any Contra title is way harder than any Turrican title.

(And it's a different genre: Contra is a "Run 'n Gun"-sidescroller (plus the awful bird-view levels) while Turri is a "Jump 'n Shoot"-platformer.)

Okay, you got a point there. Contra is completely different and also harder (if it can be compared). Just thought your Jump 'n Shoot skills would help here too, since there are some parts where you need them. Then again, there's enough that is completely different (top view levels). Street Fighter IV consumes almost all of my gaming time

I understand that John. I've been watching Daigo videos recently and will buy SF IV as soon I go to Lisbon. Watching that competition made me drool in desire.

One of my fave games of all time. I blasted a SNES pad playing it (SSF2). :)

To be honest my whole "gaming time" isn't all that much currently. I haven't even unlocked all the characters yet. When I've done that I'll focus on getting good with Fei Long before I do online matches.

Do you have a 360 or a PS3?

This game is one of the hardest i have played in the last years! :guru

Last night lost about 9 lifes fighting a spider and then a red brain in level 5 or 6(?), was the most far I could go. You lose a life if the edge of an enemy pixel touches a pixel of your hero's shadow! :crazy

No - level 4 is the one with the speeder-bikes. I haven't reached the second top-view level yet and I have strong doubts I can 'til tomorrow - lost all my remaining 6 lives in that damn speeder-bike-level...

You have nearly my score and died one level earlier.After restarting the game again and again because I always died at the beginning of level 2 through carelessness (which always lost me my precious 5-6 smartbombs) I've played it very cautiously this run - that's the reason why my score is so close to yours...

After you beat the final boss on normal, the game continues in hard mode. Since you keep your score you can continue to play ;)
Beating the boss with my last life and then level one on hard shouldn't be a too big problem. Made a stupid mistake just before I would get another extra life :banghead

Okay guys, just a reminder : I see both cosmicfrog and Predabot have only 3 continues left, which means you have used one. Since I didn't stated it clearly before your scores are valid, but from now on no continues are allowed. Even if you die in the first screen you have to reset, before you play again. Only this way all have equal chances ;)

xpect we have a serious problem now :sad As you can see on your screenshot it shows 3 continues left... I guess I will ask what Graham would do in this situation, because I'm not 100% objective to be honest. So I'll report back after I had my chat my Graham.

TCD You're absolutely right mate. I was playing consecutive games to beat the score, and it appears it seems on the eat of the thing i somehow fu** up making a continue instead of ending the game and starting again.

Please don't consider my last score because is tampered. It was not intentional but it happened. Well a bummer for me. I'm truly sorry, TCD. :(

Thanks anyway TCD but i already removed my score. I like to play fair and square, even if the error was not intentional. I always started on the beginning of the game, so it appears to me as i recall it was a game i left running and died and mistakenly continued instead of beginning a new one. I started like 6 games or more in a row, so for me was like a new game on the heat of things.

I don't care if the score is validated by Graham. Even if the gain were a mere 10000 in this game, it's against the rules, and the rules are made for one reason. To be respected. So for me it's over. As i have no time to play more games. I think it's congratulations to you, TCD!
