I know before I trained as an apprentice engineer at my last job, they used to do this with insurance work when it was smoke damaged, but I never tried it. Didnt think it was very safe for long term reliability.

I always assumed that anything electronic would be safer away from any liquid. This is a surprise for me.

And how do you apply it? Running water to the board, or diving the board on a bucket? And for how long?

Using bottled water is better than from the regular water supply because of calcareous?

It's honestly a good way of cleaning up old PCB's, and plastics too as long as they aren't too yellowed:

PCB's
-Dishwasher on a low-temp 'eco' wash: 40deg C or so.
-Just water, NO, I repeat, NO dishwasher powder / detergents.
-If you can be bothered it's worth unplugging any socketed ICs first.
-Make DA*MN SURE it's fully dry before firing up again...
...a few days on a sunny table or airing cupboard should do.

Plastics:
-Dishwasher on a low-temp 'eco' wash: 40-60deg C or so.
-Maybe a bit of detergent for this one. Personally I'd not suggest using dishwasher powder/tablets here...
...I tend to 'clean' the plastics by hand, not wash off the suds, then shove the lot into the dishwasher (water only).
-Take care! As a general rule computer cases tend to be made of plastic that won't warp with temperature but flaps 'n doors are often made of heat-moldable stuff that can, um, sag a bit...
...I once got a beautifully 2D RiscPC front flap (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c3/Acorn_Risc_PC_600.jpg/180px-Acorn_Risc_PC_600.jpg) this way.

sorry to be thick. but dishwashers have salt in 'em. I take it you don't need to remove this salt before doing the wash?

How about rinse aid, which again is in the dishwasher all the time....
