Rules:
- The round starts now (Sunday, October 26) and will end at 11:59pm UK time on Saturday, November 15.
- Score as many points as possible.
- Post screenshots of your score in this thread, and write your score underneath. You can enter as many times as you like within the round's time frame.
- No cheating of any kind (including score leeching) - this includes save states. If you suspect a contestant of cheating then don't post it in public (anyone who does so will have their posts edited or deleted) - please PM either me or Biscuit and we will investigate it. If we find anyone guilty of cheating then they will be banned for the entire season.
- Please only post your score on either the EAB or Lemon forums. If you have already played this year you have to post your score on the same forum for the whole season. If you are new, the one you post on first will be your "team" for the whole season. However you are welcome to discuss the compo, game etc. on the other forum if you wish.
- Play the game on 'Normal' difficulty.

Oh well.. sigh.. Ive got an exam coming up ( 2 of them to be exact ), working full time..etc.. so i just did not have time to get my Amiga up and running. All i can do is pray that i have time to get it going for Banshee and Battle Squadron, but X-Out was the one that i had been dreaming about competing in for quite some time.
But these next 2 shooters in the compo are some of the best on the Amiga, so there is still a big enough incentive.
Special mention to TCD and John4p for the encouragement to get my Ami up and running to compete in X-Out. Even though i could not play it was nice to know i wasn't forgotten :)

Maybe we should say which skill level to play. I choose 'Normal' which seemed to be the intended way ;)
Edit : I missed you last round blade :( Hope you find the time to play at least this round and next year we'll have another X-Out campaign... :D
Graham Humphrey
26 October 2008, 11:24
Yes - 'Normal' sounds about right.
Oh and you won't be having another X-Out campaign ;)

So there is no 'reset' of the games in the Super League? Guess that's okay, because it will take some years until we run out of games ;)
Graham Humphrey
26 October 2008, 11:57
That's exactly it, I think we'll be fine for games for quite a few years to come yet though, maybe a couple of decades down the line we'll consider resetting it :cheese

When you collect a bomb-symbol one of three lights is lit here on the left side:
http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/773/fbanshee05m656bb88mw7.png
<SPACE> and 2nd firebutton activate the "loops". But how do you use the bombs?
bippym
27 October 2008, 11:10
Have you tried holding fire down without autofire!
Don't know if it works, but it might
humble worm
27 October 2008, 11:13
hmmm the only bomb I recall is weapon which one uses "just like that" pressing fire (your plane just drops one bomb per some period of time )
there is also an item which destroys all on screen (skull?), but as far as i remember it explodes on touch
how does the symbol look like?
maybe tou mean something I call "fill item" - a thingie that you need only (i think) not to lose your weapon upgrade when killed?
john4p
27 October 2008, 11:31
@bippy: Yup, tried that, too. Didn't work, either. :confused
maybe tou mean something I call "fill item" - a thingie that you need only (i think) not to lose your weapon upgrade when killed?
Maybe you're right and it's just not a bomb. The symbol looks like a couple of black bullets/dots/tiny bombs and a 'B'-letter (it's not the skull).
Is that the item that prevents your weapon from being downgraded?
humble worm
27 October 2008, 11:32

Since HOL is down atm, I had a look at the Lemon page for Banshee and in the manual I found this :

See the file SCREEN.IFF included in this archive.
Does anybody know where (or how) to get this file?

As far as i can remember, once you get the bombs they drop automatically and constantly. don't quote me on that, but thats what i can remember.

That's right, but it's a different powerup. I think humble worm is right about the 'keep weapons' effect, but I really want to know it for sure ;)

finally got reason to take my cd32 out of wardrobe... (should have done it during CE round - keyboard sucks :guru)
maybe this time (for a first time) I will reach space level :sleep... I hope my joypad is going to make it :)
john4p
27 October 2008, 15:05
I can confirm it works. But you only keep your weapons if you had lit ALL 3 lights before you died! One light is turned off - but you keep all your stuff!
If you had 2 lights lit and die you have 1 light left and lose everything previously collected...
This explains that tip in the manual:
Get a full Build-up and you won't loose any of your Pick-ups when your plane goes up in flames.
@humbleworm: I recommend one of these so you won't have to use your keyboard on your PC: http://www.amazon.de/USB-Single-Adapter-für-PSX/dp/B000YBDWJ6/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1225116375&sr=8-5 (almost everyone has an old PS1- or PS2-pad somewhere in his basement...)
TCD
27 October 2008, 15:10
This would explain the small 'B' on the powerup ;) Good to know that for sure now, I thought I was missing something essential here :D

Doesn't the CD32 version have an extra two levels? I'm sure I've read before that it does.
humble worm
27 October 2008, 18:41
dunno, never heard about it :confused
maybe it is so - today I was suprised when I read on lemon that there are only 4 levels... always thought (imagined) that there is more than one space level (maybe thats because there are quite many space screenshots on HOL?)
I got only to the level 3 boss and to the moment it all seems the same as in lemon description (sea level, city level, desert-arctic level)
still I really hope there are no additional cd32 levels or the levels are in the end of the game :(
I am searching for evidence, nothing found yet - shame that HOL is down
Graham Humphrey
27 October 2008, 19:33
Well I've read before there are extra levels, doesn't mean for certain that they exist - of course if there are then you won't be able to play the CD32 version I'm afraid as it is obviously different to the normal version :(
And of all the times for HOL to be down eh?
humble worm
27 October 2008, 20:06
And of all the times for HOL to be down eh?
sorry, my english is not good enough to get it :spin
if there are additional levels in the end (5,6) am I still not allowed to play it?
if I would submit screens of place where I was killed? It is not likely that i would get to those levels... i ask cause Im not going to play on winuae. and i doubt if there are any more differences (more points for kill an enemy or different level structure)...
Graham Humphrey
27 October 2008, 21:12
Sorry, I meant that it's a rather inconvenient time for HOL to be down ;)
I don't think it's a good idea to play a version that has such a fundamental difference, like you say there's unlikely to be any more differences but everyone has to be playing the same version gameplay-wise and there might well be other people who can get beyond level four and what then?
I'm sorry, it's highly unfortunate and quite a rare thing to happen... is there no way you can play the floppy version?
humble worm
27 October 2008, 21:21
first lets make it clean if the levels exist at all :)
and there might well be other people who can get beyond level four and what then?
dunno, I just think that playing it up to level four in this situation would be ok...
nevermind, ofcourse I will obey the rules (have no choice;)) but first have to be sure if the dispute is not completely pointless :laughing
Graham Humphrey
27 October 2008, 21:58
Ah yes that's a good idea, if there isn't more than four levels I'm going to look a little silly :laughing

The WHDLoad version should work. I haven't tested it myself, but I'm sure it work since it's installed with the IPF's (the version on WHDownload at least).

Sorry guys, I thought I could ADF the original game but I can't do it, assume the copy protection stops that, so the first disk can't be ADF'd which is obviously a problem :(
Hopefully everyone has sorted themselves out with a working copy now though, or maybe someone does have some working ADFs, you never know.

Tell me how you do it? ;)
You just take the game and make it through? No training, no previous experience? Man, you should be a betatester ;)
I did play it 4 times before getting to the end level. I dont know what it is, but i have the ability to pick-up anything that involves twitch or quick instinct. Always have.
Usually when you see enough shoot em ups, there isnt much new to the table, other than enemy-type and bosses. Enemy placement is usually assumed and if not its all based on reaction.
It seems like parts of level 3 (church/backdrops) and really the last level are where the game really tries to ramp up the difficulty.
Maybe i should do something with video games. I dont know. Generally, the only issue i had with this game was getting use to the speed of the game and the horrible backdrops in some areas. Aside from those two things, the next issue that usually makes me play a few times through before a good run is going purely for score over survival.

EDIT-: I wont be posting back on here again for highscores for months and months i think. I have all but given up trying to get my CD drive working. The CDFS Buffered Interface wont work like it should, my original CDFS install disk had errors the very day it was sent to me from Amigakit, and the other copies i obtained also developed errors plus my previous cable hack that i used for many years is not working, and i just dont have the the time to sit here for hours trying to work it all out.
So TCD, looks like you wont be seeing me on here doing anymore high scores and to the rest of you guys!.. Good luck and have fun!!..

For the most part. Completely numb. The only times i do think is when i become my worst enemy. Like, oh yea cool cleared the first 6 levels without dying. Then the thoughts of you're going to die come in and instead of playing im thinking.
Battle Squadron was alright. I didnt really care for it too much. Kinda reminded me of Silkworm though.
Graham. Even though this is in good fun. I know there were a few competitors who made it interesting. Looking back i know it would have been neck and neck with john and I if i did just stick it through with alien breed. But, it wasnt my intention to totally forget about the weeks to come. It was only until about 6 weeks later did i remember about the competition.
In any case, thanks for the kind words.
That sucks Damien. Maybe as a suggestion you should enable a pause button so after you frantically try to stay alive, you can quickly hit the save button or something to regroup.

I might as well copy & paste what i sent Biscuit via PM into this thread.
As requested, WHDload version of Banshee on 2 adfs can be found here:
Disk One (http://amigaonline.condor.serverpro3.com/RISS/Banshee/Banshee_1_of_2.adf)
Disk Two (http://amigaonline.condor.serverpro3.com/RISS/Banshee/Banshee_2_of_2.adf)
There are a few of things some people might need to know;
In order to run, this copies the files to RAM: first (its too big for one HD disk to contain all the data).... if you switch turbo-speed drives on , or use a savestate when the game in unpacked, this shouldnt cause any problem.
Both disks are high-density, and therefore need HighDens' disks enabled on UAE. Put disk one in DF0: and disk two in DF1:
UAE config should be set to your usual Banshee requirements; AGA, 2 meg chip etc, but i would suggest adding at least 8 meg of Fast or Z3 ram as well.
The WHDload of this game also requires the devs:kickstarts/KICK40068.a1200 or .a4000
because of that, i've created a template disk for reference;
DEVS disk, no kickstart (http://amigaonline.condor.serverpro3.com/RISS/Banshee/DEVS_nokick.adf)
sticking this in DF2: will allow the game to run providing you add the file "KICK40068.a1200" to it's contents. This required file is just a renamed a1200 kickstart rom.
if anyone is still having trouble (particularly with the devs/kick bit) just ask.

Thanks, and ditto to you too. We are neck and neck. Probably i just got 1 more bonus than you or just shot a few more enemies.
When games only have 1 loop and a set amount of scoring it makes it rather tiresome for myself to go and try to take down a score. By nature i am competitive and since you gave me a good run i gave it my best not to be bested but even i know when enough is enough. And i've had enough! :)
I broke something in my 360 controller for throwing it down on the ground with some umph. Not to mention the 8 games where i hit esc to restart.
Whereas with battle squadron if you are good enough you could go for quite awhile.
Nice battle.
p.s. i reckon you one more go in you for banshee. That ellipsis hints at it. dun dun dun...

hehehe :p
Yup, grabbing as many "score" power ups as possible... Of course this means that you have less "weapon" / "speed" / "life" power ups but once you're full power / speed then you don't really need more. Also, once you get 9 lives or 9 loops collecting anymore doesn't make a difference. I never collect "life" power ups and always shoot them into the 2000 "score" power ups instead. If your good enough you still have 9 lives by the start of the 4th stage just from your high score ;)
As for "looping around a bit more" for the 3rd level boss. Nope, only the mandatory 1 loop back to destroy all components that aren't visible on the first flyby...

After killing Level 1 end boss: 47,800
After killing Level 2 end boss: 78,500
After killing Level 3 end boss: 127,200

Yea, i dont loop the third boss, only once if i miss anything. My biggest issue with not getting a higher score is i usually botch by the bug section. Whiley each bug is worth i believe 50, if i dont have enough fire power im missing 70% of those bugs. Atleast 30-40 bugs. With this issue i also miss out on killing a lot of the missile silo's.

The bugs and missile silos are very difficult to kill without half --> full weapon power...
TodaysForgotten
13 November 2008, 00:47
Amen to that, Damien. I think on my 188 run i said 'ef' it and killed 2 or 3 of those stacked silo's (second set) since i would be missing out. If points are not obtained in an area i know i should be getting them - I become upset. So, i sacrificed a life to for a happy-medium. Do the missiles give points?
DamienD
13 November 2008, 00:51

Well, I shouldn't tell you this if it is going to be a scrap between you & me ;) but there are power ups at the beginning of level 4. They are contained in the ships which for me are resemblance of some space stations. They appear on the far left or on the far right. They do not shoot.
Speaking about those large missiles. Being not armed with missile (not homing missiles) it is really difficult to pass them in one piece.

Finally i have a decent score for Banshee! And i know exactly where i was going completely wrong! Half way through tonight's game i realised something that has been holding me back in the game and that is the "power ups".
When grabbing the Spread Shot i was under the assumption for this WHOLE TIME that if you grabbed the other token which makes your bullets fatter ( now i know ) that it would take away your spread shot and make you only shoot directly forward, but in actual fact, it allows you to keep your spread shot plus have much strong fire power! I also NEVER grabbed the side shot because, again i thought that it would replace spread shot!
And to top it off, in my only game tonight i manage to get almost to the end of level 4 ( the space level ) but at the start of the level i tried to press the space in the hope that the ship would loop ( i know its no longer a WWII fighter ), but when it didn't happen i didn't bother to use it again, not realising that it makes you invincible ( i saw someone mention that here, but didn't bother reading about it ), so i could have made it most likely to the end if had of used them.
So in knowing all this, i might try it again tomorrow and perhaps finish it if i find time :)

Funny how Amiga Power's review mentions two extra levels though...? Ah well we'll go with the manual for now, unless anyone spots any different of course ;)
I decided to reactivate the subject of additional levels in CD32 version. Amiga Power not only mentioned about new levels (which is not true) but also about in-game music from CD. Is it true? In my opinion it is not. Other reviews in different magazines say that one of the biggest hurrahs of the game are nothing but sound effects during the game which was also sustained in the CD32 version. Can anyone confirm this? I do not have CD32 version.
Graham Humphrey
10 September 2009, 23:01
Having just read AP's review of the game again, it appears they did not state that there was music on the CD version. I think you may have misread it. The review said:
"It's got no in-game music," gloated Cam in his original review, prompting flutters of worry that the CD version would spawn a clunky audio track. But - hurrah! - that's not the case.
They also said they didn't get to see the two extra levels so I think they probably merely got the wrong end of the stick somewhere along the line.
