View Full Version : Softkick using Kick1.3 ROM to Kick1.2 ?
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to soft-kick Kickstart1.2 on an Amiga with Kickstart 1.3 in ROM?
I can softkick to Kickstart2.0 from a Kickstart1.3 ROM. From that point can I soft-kick to Kickstart 1.2 if I have to?
I've tried but failed and was wondering if anyone else has done this?

As I currently got NO Kick 1.3 system I cannot test this, but with SKick from Aminet you can softkick Kick 1.2 from Kick 2.0, so if you´re able to softkick into Kick 2.0 this could be helpfull : http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/pub/aminet/util/boot/skick344.lha :)

@Gary
What's the problem with softkicking 1.2 directly from 1.3 (if you can softkick 2.0)?

I've never heard of anyone softkicking downward before, but I've wondered if it were possible or not, so I'm planning to keep an eye on this thread. If someone comes up with a method of softkicking down from 1.3 to 1.2, then I'd be interested in seeing if I could softkick down from 1.3 to 1.1. I still have several games that won't run on my A500 with 1.3, but that run fine on my A1000 under 1.1 - but I lack the space necessary to set up both of them, so the A1000 is tucked away in the closet. If I could drop down to 1.1, maybe I could get some of those to run on my A500. An interesting thought ...

The softkick program (mkick I think) responds with an error message like "rom not supported". I can't remember if I've tried all the soft kick programs I found so I'll go through them again
starting with skick.

That is why I'm trying to degrade - to get Archon to work.
There is a WHDload patch for Archon but it doesn't work on my 68000 A2000. :mad

As Retroman has pointed out, you can softkick Kickstart 1.2 under Kickstart/WB 1.3 using a program called skick. I think it's the only program of its kind as all the other softkickers I know of need at least Kickstart 2.0 to work. However, I'm not sure if skick or any other program can softkick Kickstart 1.0 or 1.1. An accelerator with MMU may be necessary to do that, but I can't say for certain.
Gary: In any case, Archon should work under Kickstart 1.2. If you're having problems with your WHDLoad installed original then go to the WHDLoad web page and fill out a bug report form for the patch. Initially I had problems with the game freezing on my A4000/060 set-up, but setting the NOCACHE tooltype fixed those problems.
