View Full Version : EAB/Lemon Super League 2008: Round 8 - What Lotus III Game Mode?

Pretty self-explanatory I would think... basically just vote what mode you would like to play for Lotus III in the next round.

For those not familiar with the game: Timer is purely racing against the clock, arcade-style (obviously) and Cup is a Championship-type thing where you score points for your finishing position.

Now I would rather do the Cup mode, as we did the Timer mode in the old EAB league at the end of last year. But that's just me... vote away, people. You've got until Saturday.

Also (pretty important I feel) can people only genuinely interested in taking part in the competition vote please, as we don't want the votes distorted. Thanks.

I think timer is more fun since the difference between the times can be much smaller than the points in the cup :) Thus leading to a more interesting competition :agree

Well said, TCD :)

Sorry - but like Graham I also find racing for positions more fun.

Isn't there also the total time you used displayed in Cup mode? Because then we could use the total time as tie-breaker when 2+ peops have the same championship points.

Graham Humphrey

Only at the end of individual races, I think. I don't think it displays a total time at any point unfortunately. But what's wrong with a good old-fashioned tie anyway ;)

I'm with TCD: Timer FTW!

Are you really going to play with us Shoon? :D
Would be an honour to compete against you :agree

Since I whipped all of you on Timer last time, I need the opportunity to do it on Cup. ;)

Nothing at all. I always preferred them over X-Wings anyway. Especially the Interceptor has an awesome design! ;)

Hi I'm TCD. Nice to meet you :pHello, I'm 5h00n4y and this is my first post. I has just got me very first Amiga and I'll try this Lotus 3 game you guys be talking about for the very first time. Wish me luck. :D

Anyways, so it is a tie (fighter), so what now?
Maybe we play both modes then? ;)

Anyways, so it is a tie (fighter), so what now?I guess if e.g. the first three places got tied, everyone of those would get (15+12+10)/3 = 12.33... points. AMIRITE?

Welcome to EAB! You know it's a nice, fluffy place to be. :)
I wish you the best of luck with Lotus 3 newcomer. Hope it's not too confusing for you :cheese

I have you one question : If we play timer, would the one with the most first places win?

Too many flashy buttons, and adverts, and lights, and topics, and threads, and posts, and... and... and... ARGHHHH!!! :crazy

I have you one question : If we play timer, would the one with the most first places win?How about we add the times together, and the one with the less time needed to finish them wins? Oh Graham, you felt like a mathematical genius lately? Now you can! :D
Or use some kind of a calculating-devicey... :blased

I haven't competed in one of the comps before but I am in and I think timer would be better.

I have an abacus you could use, if I could just get it back from the oompa-loompas and fax it to you...

Oh no I just noticed that I broke the 3-all deadlock. So much responsibility, I'm too young for this sort of commitment.

Have you ever played this game before :cheese

We just simply add up all the scores - they aren't 'proper' races, you can't finish first, second, third etc ;)

Check out the Lotus III round from Ye Olde EAB League, last year... (http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=33333)

It would be the same as that.

Oh, and PWLM - welcome aboard, why not take part in the Alien Breed 1 & 2 compo while you're here ;)

I hope the 15 games we play this year won't be allowed to be voted for next EAB/Lemon-season - so we have "fresh" games 2009.

Well, played : Yeah, watched the scores : No :D
Okay, I'll have a look this evening. (yeah should really do this before making stupid remarks ;))

Correct :)

The only reason we allowed every game that had been played before to be voted for again was that it was a "new" competition and a lot of people had never played on both the EAB and Lemon leagues.

Note for WinUAE-users:

Yesterday I tried the WHDLoad-version of Lotus III. And as I remembered it was not as smooth as Lotus 1&2.

I played the PC-conversion of Lotus III (just called "Lotus" because its predecessors don't exist for PC) a lot in the late 90ies. The graphics were very smooth - much more than in the Amiga version. But sound and music were awful.

After activating JIT (just-in-time emulation) yesterday the Amiga version ran smooth as silk under WinUAE. Now I can play this game like I always wanted it: smooth like the PC-version and with the awesome Amiga-sound.

Sometimes activating JIT messes ECS-games up. So I tried the very first race using JIT (super-smooth) and scored 2.834 million. After that I deactivated JIT (and the game was as choppy as on a real Amiga 500) and scored 2.933 million. Considering the fact I screwed up the start in my JIT-try you can see in this game JIT doesn't mess anything up. Quite the contrary - it makes this game perfect!

P.S. You have to emulate an Amiga 1200 or 4000 to be able to use JIT...

Bump ;)

Currently tied at 4-4... also Biscuit asked the Lemon crew to state their preferred game mode so if anyone actually bothers to post then that'll be added to this poll's score.

john4p
17 July 2008, 09:09
What happens if it stays 4-4?

17 July 2008, 09:14
I vote TIME but selected CUP by mistake. I've updated poll options to refelct but onviously if you select to see who voted what there will be 5 users on CUP and 4 on TIME.. just so you know I made a boo boo!

TheCyberDruid
17 July 2008, 09:36
So bippy you're with us this time too? My goodness, the grand olds join in to play Lotus III :D
I guess it was a great idea not to choose a shooter this time Graham :great ;)

If it's a tie then... I'm not sure but it maybe it should be the mods' decision... ;)

17 July 2008, 19:52
If it is a tie then do both and add points up ;)

Shoonay
17 July 2008, 19:54
So, since it's STILL a tie, shouldn't we post the reasons why we've chosen the option we've chosen and why other's should too? ;)

Graham Humphrey
19 July 2008, 01:25
Bump again ;)

Still tied up so if anyone else is going to play but haven't voted yet, er, now's the time to do so I think...

john4p
19 July 2008, 18:33
If it's gonna be Cup I think any car should be allowed.

Graham Humphrey
19 July 2008, 20:10
Yep, indeed if it is Cup that is what will happen...

Right, you're an awkward bunch, aren't you? Brilliantly it's all tied up, and even better - me, Biscuit and mihcael still haven't agreed upon a method to settle it.

My initial thought was to have TodaysForgotten choose given that he has double-voting power, but he's seemingly gone missing so that's ruled out. Therefore John would be the next choice as he's second in line, as it were, and he's leading the championship currently too. Or we could let the mods decide, but either way the outcome will probably be the same ;)

Will wait until Biccy reappears before making a final decision though...

Suggestion:

Let's play Easy, Normal and Hard on both Timer and Cup.
And then just add the scores by multiplying each Cup-point by 100,000!

So if for example one had scored a total of 50,000,000 points in Timer mode and a total of 400 championship points in Cup mode he would have a total score of:

50,000,000 + 400*100,000 = 50,000,000 + 40,000,000 = 90,000,000

Graham Humphrey
19 July 2008, 20:46
I don't want to do both, that's far too fiddly and time-consuming. Better if it's one or the other. And it may put people off who don't have the time to play all of them.

Graham Humphrey
19 July 2008, 23:00
I'm guessing John that if you had to choose, you'd go for Cup?

john4p
19 July 2008, 23:30
If I had to...
