I've been using KDE4.1-beta on top of Xgl as my main desktop for a while, but I've noticed that I get bad performance (frameskips, bad sound, and overall slowness) with my default compilation options (--with-sdl --with-sdl-gfx --with-alsa). I also tried compiling in OpenGL support, but it had no effect. When I go back to KDE 3.5 (or any other non-compositing desktop) my performance is absolutelt stellar (Even those "needs a 060 and uses every single feature ever included in AGA" demos run beautifully). Do I just need more powerful hardware (All I've got is an Athlon XP 3000+ and a craptastic old NVidia 5600 FX) to run it on a fancy desktop or is there some way I can tweak the performance
