There is NO way to get stuck in Turrican. there is "always" a way to continue on, you just need to try harder to find a way out. Keep trying! :great

Here are some 'tips' for people that play Turrican not so often :

1. At the very start turn left and walk as far as possible. Jump up and gain one extra live :)
2. Use the spread shot. The laser has more fire power, but it's easier to shoot flying enemies with the spread shot.
3. Use the beam whenever possble and turn into the 'wheel' when there are spikes on the ground.
4. Always have the spacebar ready for power lines. They help a lot in certain situations.

Better yet: use a dualshock-controller.

My setup:

Triangle - single fire (=> beam & mine)
Circle - power line / wheel [SPACE]
Cross - jump [UP]
Square - auto fire
R1 - grenade [ALT]

I honestly think the maps in part 1 are far bigger than in part 2 !!. I don't know how many times i can sit there and finish it !! :shocked:crazy

I made a number of errors, and i know i could have done quite a bit better, but......

You silly man :D .. Yes if you shoot those small floors away to the far left at the start of World 2, you won't be able to go up into that spot, but you don't need to go that way, because all that is really up there is just a bunch of bonuses ( which will help your score though :) ) .

What you need to do is go back the way you came to the far right of the play area and beneath you, you will find bits of the same kind of floor. Just hold down your fire button ( with autofire off if you have it ) and rotate the beam you have to destroy the floor below you, so that you can progress!!.. :great

Don't stress mate, you will absolutely kill it in this round!, your top score is actually quite good from this early in the round!, so if its that good now, then i am pretty sure you are going to finish it before you know it. ;)

I think the reason why i finished it this quickly though, is because i had Turrican on the C64 and probably finished it about 40 times in 1990, and then when i got my Amiga in the same year, i probably repeated that again! So even though its been a long time since i have really sat down and played it, the layout of the game has seemed to have stuck in my mind! When i was playing it tonight i could remember small bits of the map here and there which REALLY did help to get me through it!. :)

Good Luck my friend! :spin

Thanks! 1.3 million points IS quite good, actually. I'm much more proud having achieved this here (a couple of months ago) than my score from today:

http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/6872/001oz5.png

It's much more important to me to finish with as many lives left as possible than reaching a high score. As you see my record is finishing with 68 lives (69, to be exact: one in play, 68 in reserve). In the end I just had a score of 1.3 million.

Today, when I made 1.9 million points I only finished with 47 lives left. I had to sacrifice some lives to timeouts because for points you have to go everywhere in the levels. I hate playing for points in Turrican. I much rather would play for "who finished the game with most lives left".
At least the lives at the end are worth additional points, too.

Of course lol.

But you could use the score as tie-breaker. So if two people end the game with 50 lives the one with the better score wins. And if two people
die before the end they "finish" the game without any lives - so that only their score would be tie-breaker...

But now it's too late to change the rules anyway...

@john4p: Awesome job on your score! And Awesome job on the Chaos Engine as well !! :) I will see if i can find time today to try and beat in you Turrican, but i know its going to take a bit more caring and a bit more careful planning on my part to do it!. I actually lost most of my lives in the "Aliens" style levels towards the end of the game.

Update: I just played half way through again, but made some absolute blunders so i turned it off. lol.. I could have scored higher than my previous score but not as much as John4p if i had of kept going, so i will try another time but next time will be different! :evilgrin

When it comes to winning and losing though, as you know, i am of the same sentiment, like with the Chaos Engine when i was knocked down to 4th spot, but when i realised it was you that came out on top in 1st place, then it was all ok ;)

Actually Turrican is really good for me right now, because it takes alot of things off my mind while i am playing because right now i am under extreme stress and pressure!. Gotta love the Amiga & Turrican for that, they transport me to a world ( and a happier time ) that not even GTA4 could! :)

Er, I think so. Sadly I can't fully remember (and I only played it this morning...)

If you mean that boss where you are stuck on the left hand side of the screen and you cant move anywhere while the boss slowly gets closer and closer with its large claw like pincers, then its actually very easy to kill... actually if you do it the right way, you could kill it after it moves only an inch.

Just stand there, hold down the fire button and just give it a constant stream of your beam while pressing space bar to use your power walls, and then when you are out of those, just keep hitting alt and grenade the bastard!. With this method you really cant lose!. Actually even without the power walls or grenades, your beam should be enough to destroy it :)

Try to stand as far left as possible (near to the spikes). There is a position where he can't get you, but you can easily use your beam to destroy him (like blade said). Even if you lose one live to find the right position to stand, you wont lose more lives because he drains your energy.

I can see part of your problem in that screenshot and the problem is that your beam is a bit too short!.. you need to try and get there with a longer beam from collecting the bonus tokens scattered around throughout the whole game. Generally speaking, i try and get there with a full length beam so it reaches all the way to the end!.

BUT.... of course if you lose to many lives inbetween your last lot of tokens then your fire power is going to be diminished. What you should do before you get to that boss next time, is test your beam to see how long it is so you know where you stand in the fight, and then if its too short again, you will need to run up about half way, beam him as much as you can before he gets too close , then run a couple more inches back, beam him again and then when he is only a couple of inches away from you, jump up to the far left again so that you are level with him and them beam the shit out of him once more and then use all your power walls and grenades!!.

Other than that. your screwed! ;)

Yes - it's a timeless classic. I actually haven't bothered at all with current-gen games. After Playstation 2, X-Box and Gamecube I didn't buy any new consoles.
I'll wait until I have a 1080p (full HD) TV or Beamer before I buy the PS3.

Still I have a PSP and currently enjoy Crisis Core (but mostly play emulators on it).

@bLAZER: Almost always you will have the laser as weapon when you reach this boss. Just press repeatedly the firebutton (FAST) - he'll soon go down (faster than with the beam plus the laser is always "long enough" ;)).
Of course you can also use your extras to make him go down even faster: grenades are stronger, so you should first repeatedly push ALT until you have no more of these before you push SPACE to use the powerlines.

You "are" aware of the beam are you not? hold down the fire button with autofire off, and the beam comes out, then push the joystick left or right until the beam is facing down so that you can destroy the platforms beneath you. :)

If you have played Turrican 2, its the same thing.

Well i do want to upgrade my PC's video card to run some newer games, but financially my priorities need to sit elsewhere right now, like paying off my $24,000 loan which is mostly a study loan. :( ... not good having that hanging over your head, but i am VERY happy with my Amiga and always have been. :)

About the best thing i think of for having a proper spec PC though is to have a link up via a network for a 2 player action when a friend comes over. Went to a friends house about 3 weeks ago and we link up his notebook and his billion $$$ PC .. lol... to play.. oh shit what was it called again?.. i have forgotten now.. lol... will think of the name later :)

Edit : Why I always have to be second

What do you mean mate :confused

Damn, I forgot about the beam!

Thanks

How could you forget mailman!?? Its TURRICAN !!... You should be tortured for this :evilgrin

I did too, took me several minutes on that level figuring out what the heck I had to do.

As for X-Out : I really hope it gets voted! Haven't played it for a while, but I think I'm still not bad at it. Would really be fun to play it under competition pressure :)

WHDLoad slave for Turrican is buggy (at least on my configuration). When there are too many bullets on the screen, the game quits with Access Fault. It is similar to Alien Breed 2 slave bug in which you could not use rebounders because when there were too many of them the game quitted. It is very difficult for me to play it...

bLAZER

Then don't use WHDLoad.... the load times are short.

Good luck mailman! It's a shame the WHDLoad version isn't flawless :( So you always have to think about how you play and you never know if the game crashes anyway. I really hope you manage to reach the later level and do a great score :)

I shall do my best mate!, and i think it will be attainable if i play smart :), and i really do hope that X-Out does get voted as well because that game really is quite a challenge and it has things that other shootem-ups normally don't that really does up the competition pressure as you inferred, plus it has music by Huelsbeck :cool

And i haven't played it in quite a while either ( at least not properly )

It's torture enough playing Turrican

If you consider playing Turrican torture, then you were obviously a tortured man "before" you started playing it :D

Under WinUAE the WHDLoad-version works flawlessly...

Because you emulate some slower processor.

john4p
16 June 2008, 18:41
Probably (actually I emulate a 68040 processor with AGA and full collision detection, but without JIT - because that mostly ruins ECS-games).

Umm...did you try the WHDLoad-version of the CDTV release? Maybe that one works better for you?

edit: Just saw Killergorilla only released a CDTV-version of Turrican II, but not I.
Well, then I suggest you also use WinUAE or E-UAE to play this game.

Well a couple of problems this time round. first off, i stuffed up by accidentally leaving the 2nd Alien level within about 2 minutes after arriving in it, which meant a whole level full of points completely lost and my Uncle has come across from Perth to see me and he came home last night really drunk and was trying to talk to me while i was playing the last world .. :banghead :p Although i did manage to finish with 44 lives left over :)

So if i find time today i will try again.... Here is my score for the time being though :)

@CyberDruid: I will get back to you about your music post soon mate.. ive actually hardly been on the net the last few days... too caught up :crying

I think it could be possible for me to do another 200k points. It's really astounding how much points you get in the alien levels. john4p

Still can't understand how you finished it with 68 lives left :D
Well, there's also luck involved, because you get random lives in world 3. Sometimes you can get 20 lives in world 3, sometimes only 5 or so. So the lives count in Turrican is not as significant as it's in Turrican II which doesn't have random "one-ups".

blade002
21 June 2008, 18:44
Damn that was hard, but i managed to beat you John4p :) I tried to get brave and gained 4 extra lives in the jetpack levels which paid off, plus this time around i managed to finish the 2nd Alien level in full and its absolutely smothered in gemstones! plus i also finished with 41 lives left.

uhm. I got into the ship just as time ran out and now the ship isnt there. I had 27 lives (dont know where you all found 60+ lives) I only lost 10 lives and i missed about 15k in mario brothers bricks. So i guess its 5k per life? giving me 1,759,350?

TCD
28 June 2008, 21:29
Yup, that should give you 1.759.350 points. I think you found a really rare bug in the game :)

john4p
28 June 2008, 21:36
That's correct. Very good result considering you haven't played the game all that much.

There are quite a few secrets where you can find 3, 4, 6 and 7 lives at once. I'm glad you didn't invest too much time in this game - because I'm sure you would have found them... ;)

Plus world 3 is like an extralife-lottery: sometimes the giant "Super Mario"-blocks contain up to 3 lives - and there are a lot of this blocks in that world. Also in the jetpack-stages the enemies on rails can drop 1-ups.

blade002
28 June 2008, 22:09
Its all over for me.. i made one crucial screwup in the extra lives department by destroying a block that takes you to the top on a lift where there are 6 extra lives and every point counts in this compo.. so thats it for me... I could start again, but i wont have enough time before the compo ends.... Actually my uncle was supposed to be going out to see his mate for the entire weekend and last night when i heard the key in the door i can recall just saying to myself..... oh FUCK @$@%@%@%^!@^!Q^#Q@^#$^$#Q@^Q@#$^#@^^!Q%^!Q%^ !... sigh....

Yes. I screamed on the one level where 3 lives popped from the bottom of the blocks. I also missed the 1ups in the upper left of one stage. Infact i know i missed those extra lives and a few other blocks.

I also noticed a couple of lives fall on the jetpac level.

I don't know if i would have cared to find them all. I didnt know the game wasnt so straight-forward. It's all in fun though, no?

Thanks CyberDruid :) The key here really is finding time to play it, since Turrican really is a HUGE game as you know. Here's hoping that Turrican gets pick again sometime in the near future but this time "without" interruptions! ;)

Actually the 60+ lives is kind of beyond me as well !?? .. The only way you could really get that many is to hardly ever lose a life ( except for the time outs of course ), so John4p must have played EXTREMELY well to have not lost probably maximum 5 lives just from being killed by the enemy !!

Update-: yeah your right John, the extra lives can be a bit of a lottery sometimes, but i think its just mostly down to your playing skill since its not easy to grab all those lives without being wiped out!!
