View Full Version : Rainbow Islands Update

Hi Guys

After chatting with Horace for a bit he has rekindled my asm and I have decided to add a trainer, and support for a 2nd button/cd32 to rainbow islands!

I have already discovered quite a bit, and training it will be easy, I just wanna know what you wanna see added.

I can already train lives, add all upgrades (shoes, 2,3,4 rainbows and fast rainbows) and I can collect the diamonds, and I think in the correct order too ;)

So tell me

May sound daft but can you (or maybe you already have) an option to stop the evil water level from rising? ta

Can you add the levels from the arcade version please. ;)

You don't want much then eh ;)

If I can figure the game out properly including the mapping, enemy ai etc then I suppose it's possible.. Too ambitious right now tho :P

ooohh... mapping.... = future level editor??

you'd need to have it be able to read exported map files though...

Yeah button 2 for jump :) and cd32 pad support, tho I reckon it'll be for trainer options ;)

Hungry Horace

a quick update. I've trained lives and credits so far.

I can also force 1,2,3 or 4 rainbows as well as fast feet and rainbows. I can also change the frequency that specials are dropped. It is set to 3 by default. I can also change or force certain items to be revealed from the ground.

Also i have written a routine that forces any gem dropped to be the next gem needed. I still haven't figured out what i need to do to force the game to show the secret room. Not figured out the times yet for water. It's proving to be a bitch. Any idea's or anyone knows where the routine is please give me a shout.

When water hits you, you die..
Try tracking what routine is taking 1 life from you. Then see what calls this routine, and keep tracking back, that might help you.. ?

All bonus counters are found and mapped, and can be changed ;)

Working on "Forcing" a bonus of users choice :D

bippym
15 April 2008, 16:57
is there actually any interest in this?

If not i'll look for another game. Will be a shame now i've almost figured out the bonus system

I personally love this game to bits, I don't normally use any trainers to be honest (I never get very far) but I'm sure I would if there were that level of choice!

I'm certainly interested! Although more in the two-button support than anything else. More Amiga games should be re-hacked to add extra button support imo

Hungry Horace

very interested of course bip ;)

one of the best amiga games around

bippym
15 April 2008, 17:44
the 2 button support should be simple to add. Cd32 support wont be needed i don't think as the game only needs a jump button.

The trainer will hopefully be nice and big lol

A boss trainer option would be great, so I can start against the vampire boss on island 3 with just one rainbow and slow speed. I love fighting that boss.

would be good to if you could just fight the boss's.

Perhaps you can add a feature where you play as a different character say a sun from island 4 or one of the guns.

bippym
14 May 2008, 13:45
Err..

Boss trainer would be simple I guess, just remove his energy ;)

As for the rest.. err!!!!

(I'll get back to this as soon as my life is back to as-normal-as possible)

Hi bippym,

he meant a trainer that allows you to jump to each boss right from the start. Like the starting level options in other trainers.
I hope your life gets back to normal soon.

That character sprite looks utterly fricking retarded. If you revise this for CD32, do NOT use those graphics.

I consider myself a master of both the Amiga/ST and arcade versions, and I can state unequivocally, that the MAME experience is perfection.

There is really no reason for a remake (Graftgold did a superb conversion, even on the ST!).

But good luck with your revision, anyway!

Hungry Horace
14 May 2008, 23:04
an AGA version with the extra levels, based on the amiga code could be better than the arcade ;)

the amiga version and arcade versions feel almost the same anyway... except i prefer the amiga speed, and using up to jump (although i've only ever played on mame)

Differences I recall between Amiga and arcade:

Arcade is fullscreen (I love this).
Enemy AI is more intelligent.
Each Island-map has a horizontal map below it, showing round-progression.
The character sprite jumps higher (there are still two jump heights), but this makes collapsing rainbows from under an enemy much more dangerous.
You can't collapse rainbows as quickly - collision detection is slightly different on Amiga/ST, and in this game this is major issue since there are so many sprites.
In platformless rounds, on Amiga/ST you can hold the joystick in the diagonally-up position and cast rainbows to essentially "fly" up through the level, hoping for the best/taking advantage of invincibility after life-loss. This is not as easy in arcade (two buttons and again jump height).
Obviously, the extra Islands.

AGA? This game does not need more colours, IMHO. The palette is perfect.
The only thing I never really liked about the game was the in-game tune.

Incidentally, has anyone ever played the PC-Engine version? I would be interested in checking it out.

Hungry Horace
15 May 2008, 10:22
but so many of those are un-needed / unnoticable. perhaps some of them are so subtle, that's they contribute to why the amiga version feels better, not worse.

AGA? This game does not need more colours, IMHO. The palette is perfect.

the original authors did not think so, and an enhanced version was planned but sadly shelved as i recall.

many games dont need more colours, but its still nice to have them.

The Amiga version does not feel better than the arcade, IMO: the arcade version is supreme.

I did not know an AGA version was planned. Most of the AGA versions of games have unimpressed me, and I would imagine such a version would be made merely to cash in on the name, rather than to render it visually "better" (like many of the others).

A more important addition, instead of just making it more colourful, would have been to make it fullscreen/increase sprite-size, IMO...

Hi Bippy,

I'd also like to test your trainer so far. especially i'm interested in the Gem-Trainer. An In-Game-Option that turns on the counter, that you collected the small gems in the correct order on an island would be fantastic. :bowdown

there is a cheat for that in the mame emulator for the arcade game and with it, you get the big gem after defeating the island boss. you need to collect all big gems in the right order to win the game, so a trainer for the small gem counter would be a stunner. Hope u read this some time

Hungry Horace
08 January 2010, 17:29
work has started on the trainer for the WHDload slave, thanks to Bippy's notes.

However, i have to work out a sensible method of 'implementation' as there are a lot of possibilities here.

Bippy - if you have any others (like info on the joystick inputs) that would be great as it might save me a bit of time :)

Venku Skirata
10 January 2010, 12:30
Lives Counter for Player 1 is at E6D3

Hungry Horace
10 January 2010, 15:03
in the versions Bippy and i have tested with, Player 1 address is $e330, usually stored in D0, and lives is found at 6(a0)

I think joystick inputs would be more helpfull to Horace ;)
