Hi, mighty patchers !

I was wondering if Psygore (or someone else) could whdify Gnome Ranger [1987, Level 9, 1 disc] ?
'tis a graphic text adventure not unlike Guild of Thieves. A classic among the classics ;).

I have a couple of others candidates for a whdload, as some of you are aware of, I'll post about them in time...

Regards and... bon courage,

Hi,

I found out that some Level 9 Team members have coded an interpreter for their once-famous text & gfx adventure games. I have successfully tested the Win32 port with Gnome Ranger, it should work fine with other Level 9 titles such as the Time & Magic Series and Scapeghost.

Unfortunately, I can't get the pictures to be displayed with the Amiga port of the interpreter. I mailed the author about it, meanwhile you're welcome to pick up the Win32 port (will appear in the -misc.AMI or -misc.PC section of my web site soon). I'll spread out the .dat files too, as it seems OK to do so with Level 9 :agree .

There is still hope.

Just a side note, I wasn't aware that Sir Galahad had made an install for Lancelot (what a coincidence, another Knight !). Since Gnome Ranger is based on the same premises, I guess WHDf'ying it could be done without too much hassle by the aforementioned Fairlight representative.

The reason why it would still be desirable is that playing GR with the right fonts and the black background is more enjoyable, inmho.

Beware Humans !
Ingrid Bottomlow is back to mess around in Amiga land for good !

Some of you may have noticed Psygore just finished coding a very neat Gnome Ranger slave (http://www.whdload.de/games/GnomeRanger.html).
That would gnot have been possible without the scan of the gnoriginal manual by Idaneels, the maker of GBCPC.

Now, enjoy this great level 9 (one of the best, really) adventurer, with bypassed manual protection (just press F6 to input the password when restoring a saved game) and the mostly sought after quit gnoption :lol.

The slave seems to support at least one ADF version.
This said, don't rush on PlanetEmu : Most of the "TOSEC" ADFs have a bootblock virus or other problems.

You may wait for KG repack, or install from an ADF dlfrsilver was nice enough to clean for me.

Or install it yourself :)

The *preinstalled version* is in the Zone now :cool .

Faster said than done, KG ! At least for me.
I had to reinstall my OS from a rather old backup, because it had started to behave strangely.

The SCA virus was not detected with the Virus Executer bootable floppy (but I found out interesting stuff with the file integrity checking feature, more on that later).

I usually use Virus Checker II, but I could make it work again and load at startup only the last hour :nervous .

By the way, this game's ADF set has to be the most ugly set for a given game :guru . Check your ADFs with VirusZ, you will be surprised.

The Kent Team release is not supposed to be virused but it has bad sectors. Also, none of these groups did anything to remove the manual protection. The only modification they made is to make the game load from the WB, AFAIU.

Anyway, I hadn't remove the "copy protection tab" in the first place when running VC II, that's why the install I did from the SCA version didn't work (I think).

Oh, I should mention Murakami *preinstalled version* was certainly done from a clean image, so you don't have to worry about your system being hit by a virus (I don't think those old bootblock viruses could do any harm to a modern OS, but better safe than sorry).

Why you keep calling it a "repack" anyway?

NewDeli

The files copied from an ADF or an IPF + the slave used for installation
All that put in a compressed zip or lha file
-> make a repack, or a WHD repack for me

How would you call it ?

a preinstalled version.

It was never "re-packed"

But anyway... drifting Off topic.

Ah, and what about a preinstalled WHD repack :crazy .

Here is the fixed SCA ADF, in case you're willing to have at least a working floppy image in your collection. This version could be used to install Gnome Ranger from, but don't complain if it doesn't.

This ADF has been cleaned by myself ;)

Yeah, and I am aware you should request a repack from a "pirate" only if you really tried hard to find the missing part of the archive by yourself, and that he may simply refuse to repack anything after the initial release.

Thanks people, and especially to dlfrsilver for pointing out to me the amazing improvements WinUAE has gone through lately :spin .

I may reup the beautifully scanned manual anytime, if needed.

Ah, if only *someone* could jump on the bandwagon and WHD'fy the other Level 9 classic, namely Knight Orc...

A repack is a fix for a broken original release. You don't request one unless it was broken in the first place.

Hence yours isn't a repack.
